I had an 1985 1.6 back in the day. Still one of the best handling FWD cars I've ever had the pleasure of driving.
Same here but 1989 G plate. Had power steering. I’ll never forget my young days in my 1.6 GTI. 1st gear used to pull 30mph in milliseconds off the lights😂. This 1 on the video looks awesome.
I’m glad we both survived though pal, obviously top drivers we are👍
That’s some impressive piloting! What a quick car, and well built too. I have a time attack competition this weekend, so this has helped me get into the right frame of mind. Wish me luck!

Is that with a Quaife 6-speed sequential?? What's the engine displacement? Must be a lot of fun to drive, I used to take my 205 Rallye 1.9 on track, club racing 😊
@@MrMrHelix yes we use a 6 speed quaife sequential gearbox. It’s 1598cc.

May I ask why you didn't use the 1.9 gti engine?
@@richardjones2811 yes of course. We had a very powerful platform at our disposal with the turbo charged TU5J4. We have been building them for many years reliably in excess of 400bhp so there was no testing and development needed. At the time F1, world touring car and WRC had gone 1.6 turbo so it was fitting with what was going on globally in motorsport. The space was greater in the engine bay, which meant I could focus on lengths and diameters of boost hoses and exhausts to make it super efficient, it looks prettier and more importantly for me it hadn’t been done before, it was something different. They are the main reasons.
