I don't think anyone noticed the legend Tabla maestro, the great Dildar Hussain, the right hand of greatest Nusrat Fateh Ali khan. He is sitting next to that Tabla player and himself playing with the harmonium. Can you imagine when he is backing the tabla player, the knots will go wrong?
Lyrics of this song tell a tale of its time (1300-1400 AD) - verses include hindustani (originating from a mix of Persian, Urdu, Hindi), Braj/Awadhi linguistics. This was created when Chishti order of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) originating in Herat, Afghanistan and influenced by mystics from Damascus, Syria met the Hindi culture during medieval India at the cultural melting pot of Delhi. Another notable poet of this time was Kabir Das whose provocative work was also a product of this coming together of cultures. It is not often in pre-modern history that two cultures separated by oceanic distances meet in a harmonious and syncretic manner. The Indian sub-continent is in fact an exception and hence, forms the strong philosophical basis of post-independence modern, secular India. We should not undermine how cultures travel and dissolve into each other and with the benefit of hindsight, Hindus and Muslims of modern day India should be aware that we are carriers of this culture of love and appreciation for each other.

I don't think anyone noticed the legend Tabla maestro, the great Dildar Hussain, the right hand of greatest Nusrat Fateh Ali khan. He is sitting next to that Tabla player and himself playing with the harmonium. Can you imagine when he is backing the tabla player, the knots will go wrong?

This was created when Chishti order of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) originating in Herat, Afghanistan and influenced by mystics from Damascus, Syria met the Hindi culture during medieval India at the cultural melting pot of Delhi. Another notable poet of this time was Kabir Das whose provocative work was also a product of this coming together of cultures. It is not often in pre-modern history that two cultures separated by oceanic distances meet in a harmonious and syncretic manner. The Indian sub-continent is in fact an exception and hence, forms the strong philosophical basis of post-independence modern, secular India. We should not undermine how cultures travel and dissolve into each other and with the benefit of hindsight, Hindus and Muslims of modern day India should be aware that we are carriers of this culture of love and appreciation for each other.
