    I think editing layers is going to be the most useful feature for me in this update. Earlier in the year I was doing loads of comping, and I said to myself, I wish could edit these layers without needing to promote them.

    So glad this was finally added! When coming over to S1 from Cakewalk Sonar (when it went belly up), not being able to edit layers was the biggest thing I missed.

    I used playlists in pro tools to keep alternate edits in the same session such as radio edits, it let me be able to make changes to automation and take care of client mix notes and be able to bounce mixes with less hassle.

    Tip:- If you record multiples of the same instrument for example, an acoustic guitar with say a "body" mic, a "neck" mic, and a Mid Side mic and then record multiple takes. by grouping them, You can edit one of the mic takes say the "body mic" and all the other mic recording layers will edit the same parts in there respective takes. this is a huge time saver, never seen any other DAW come even close to this. (sorry if it seams a bit complex)

      Comping multitrack recordings has always been this way in Pro Tools for nearly 2 decades. Logic Pro, Ableton Live and Reaper also works the same way. I'm not sure about FL Studio though.

    I just switched to studio one (from Ableton Live), and I was literally struggling to do this today. I had to do a lot of copy and paste. Now it's time to update. Thanks for this!

    Editing layers on 11 tracks of drums is a bit tricky. Is there a way to do it without having to do it track by track?

    • @damirvukelic8087
      @damirvukelic8087 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, especially if there has been many takes that failed. It is a pain in the butt to delete all those manually. I tried to find a solution to instantly select, like, take 4, and to delete all those tracks, but couldn't figure it out

    • @Kvelertax

      Group your 11 tracks together to one edit group! Also pay attention to the group settings (little wrench icon) to customise group behaviour to your needs!

      @@studioonetutorials you're absolutely right, that was very vague. and then Presonus released another video, specifically on midi improvements, which answered a lot of my prayers lol. so i've upgraded to v6 at last. one thing i would love improved however is the Listen Tool. Currently it soloes an instrument and starts playback from wherever you click in the timeline. I would love an option to continuously play notes/chords i'm clicking on or around - for as long as the mouse button is pressed in - instead of automatically progressing to whatever else is there in the Piano Roll editor. Not sure if you're familiar, but FL Studio does it that way and I love it. Think it could be a great alternative mode for the Listen Tool we currently have in S1.

    I narrate audiobooks, and I use layers, one for each chapter to keep my workflow uncluttered. This has always worked great EXCEPT when I need to edit a chapter. If I make any moves, trims, etc... It EDITS EVERY LAYER BELOW IT! (When you show this at 2:58 it is clearly doing the same thing).
    How do I get it to NOT do that? I upgraded to 6.5 from 5.5 today because I saw the feature "Edit Layers Individually" and assumed it would solve this problem... but it doesn't seem to do it. You can move all the individual layers around without bothering any other tracks, but it is impossible to do this with the main track that is active. This has cause me many near emergencies as I thoughtlessly make a minor edit on one chapter without moving it to a separate editing track (Which is the only workaround I have found) and nearly ruined many hours of work.
    I really hope you know how I can move or trim audio on the main channel without messing up everything below it. (preferably WITHOUT a key command). This is the ONLY reason I paid to upgrade, and I am quite frustrated right now... hope you can help!

    If I record takes to layers and want to quickly audition a section of the song's various "takes" , is there a way to switch all of the tracks between the layers at once? This has been a time drain for a good while. Thanks in advance!

  • @JohnDeCarteretElvis
    @JohnDeCarteretElvis 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey Joe,
    How do you composite together vocals that were recorded on different tracks as in they are not layered on the same track. I want to put them all together on one track, creating layers. This way I can composite them more easily by treating thm as different takes, which they technically are, just not layered.

  • @pagunamina
    @pagunamina 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Is there any way to keep adding new layers on each take, even if the first take is the just intro section and the next one one is just the outro section for example?
    I've been struggling with that because I record drums remotely and I need to keep the number of the takes chronologically correct, to send to my clients.
    I don't know if that's a setting issue or something not available from studio one... what happens when I record different sections of the song is that studio one assumes that if that layer has space, it is the same take.

    lets say i have a lead vocal track with 5 layers. i want to edit the actual lead timing, it screws up all my back up takes. is there a way to edit the lead track but keep the backup takes in the same timing. drives me bonkers

  • @jamieschidlowsky3251
    @jamieschidlowsky3251 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you show a workflow for grouped takes? Ex. Drums? That's the most different thing from pro tools and it'd really help to have a consistent workflow so I don't keep mixing up takes.

    • @BNLNRD
      @BNLNRD ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been doing that a fair bit back in version 3, and even back then it's been really straightforward. All tracks of the group are edited simultaneously, and if you don't want that, you either suspend the group or hold "Alt" while selecting a take region or layer.

    • @jamieschidlowsky3251
      @jamieschidlowsky3251 ปีที่แล้ว

    Started migrating a couple weeks back, but just saw you have that really bad.. side channel, but seems like all of the selectors on the channel to be useless. For vs 7 it would kicks… if you made that another viewable option, where that side channels show, but then just a small info tab next to the track. Maybe you can do this and wasting my time, but haven’t see that, nor did I know about the side channel!

    Try this handy trick.... Select one terrific layer, then click the delete button on a DIFFERENT crappy layer. Ooops, yeah, it deletes the terrific one.... the one you DIDN'T click. But it's not a bug.... It's a feature, and working "as expected" according to the helpful technical support agent. :/

    Here's another feature I'd like when it comes to layers
    I would like to choose blade and hold my left mouse button down, and cut seamlessly through take-layers while dragging the mouse from top layer to buttom, slightly pivoting the mouse left and right to avoid cutting the varied start and end tail times, whilst it deleting what is on the right side of the mouse.
    It would be nice if it knew when I was at the end of a comp and at the start of a comp, therefore altering by deleting left of the mouse, or right of the mouse.
    Alternatively give take-layers the silence feature
    Thanks!
    I'd appreciate anyone giving this comment a thumbs up

    Great update!
    Haven’t had a chance to check out the new layer features.
    My question is, why would you edit a layer when you can edit on the comp track?
    I mean if you’re editing a layer, I assume it’s because you want to use it on your comp.

    How about when recording multiple tracks, like drums, how can we select all of the take 1 tracks?

    • @DanielHahnfeld
      @DanielHahnfeld 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Before you start a multitrack drum recording you should add all drum tracks to a group and make sure that in the group settings 'editing' is checked. This will make sure that all edits will stay in sync across all drum tracks. This works also within layers (takes).
