  • Kubla Khan is a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It was published in the year 1816. The complete title of the poem is Kubla Khan, Or, A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment.
Coleridge saw an opium-induced dream after reading and sleeping on a travel book by Samuel Purchas. He describes the palace of Xanadu, built by Kubla Khan as his summer house. The palace is located in a valley which is surrounded by hills. River Alph flows across these hills, cutting through measureless caves, sprouting like geysers, and finally falling into the seamless ocean.
Further, Coleridge tells us about another dream in which he saw a young maiden from Abyssinia singing about Mount Abora. If only the poet can listen to her song again, he will attain the poetic genius that he has been searching for.
