It's so eerie. What on earth could've happened to Amsterdam for it to end up like this. A lot of buildings still standing but sunken more than a hundred meters beneath the ground. it feels like It's folding in on itself
The netherlands, where amsterdam is, is largely at or below sea level. Even without a rising sea level, the dutch battle against the ocean for new real estate to this day. It's likely that much of old amsterdam was reclaimed by the sea as time went on in BRC's timeline and they decided to just build on top of everything else.
I like to think the coffin with the mask is meant to represent Jet Set Radio. This is mostly due to the eerie resemblance of DJ Cyber's mask with Zero Beat/ the JSRF alien face logo. Makes sense the coffin is on the depths of this seemingly forgotten part of the city. Almost like paying a tribute and making a reference that Jet Set Radio as an IP is as good as dead and forgotten, though it is the foundation for what is on the surface, same as how Old Amsterdam is the foundation for New Amsterdam.
While this comment aged like milk, I do think it has some validity. During the development of the game, there was no indication of a new JSR in development. Likely, I think that your comment is right. That coffin is a representation of JSR, something that was the foundation of this game but was forgotten along with the rest of Old Amsterdam. *Till someone dug it up and brought it back.*
I really wished the game had more of this, having entire underground areas of Old Amsterdam that are full of secrets would've been so cool. Not to mention the mask detail. Its definitely connected to Felix somehow especially when the first dream sequence has a river area with buildings on either side which might be Mataan if what Coil said is to be believed. There's not enough 3D games with secrets like these anymore.
An interesting (but potentially worthless) observation one can make about Old Amstedam is that felix has some sort of memory of it, because it showed up in the first dream sequence. What I find interesting about the memory was it's lack of color and details, besides the shape of the buildings and canals. My personal theory is that felix was a child when Old Amsterdam still existed, which explains the lack of detail.
i thought the same kind of thing! my personal take is that the mask itself may contain these memories, but younger felix in old amsterdam also makes sense. in that first memory on the canal, i remember seeing one of the silhouetted characters on the boat having a horn almost like masked felix from the big three intro. just going off of memory, i could be wrong though
@@80HP_and_ADHD Checked a video of the sequence, and you're right! That figure is also much shorter than everyone else, so maybe both of our theories have some merit?
@@atomicanachronism8849the oldheads don't mention any other people wearing the mask (aside from dj cyber of course) so maybe felix really did have a life or childhood in old amsterdam and it wasn't a random/unknown character wearing it (plus the oldheads once lived in old amsterdam, remember the red light district, the real trees, know about the true nature of the mask, etc.) and then there's that sarcophagus in the underground bazaar, my guess is that it was used to preserve felix in some kind of stasis so he could survive past the flood that put old amsterdam underground. (there's a lot of unanswered who's what's and why's so this entirely guesswork.) something had to have awakened him, and then he left the underground to emerge from that secret area's exit into versum hill. (possibly the reason why he never used a boost pack, because he never had one in the first place so he did things old-school.) the mask might've urged him to go all-city, with the colorless memories of old amsterdam making him want to color in the new one (or some other reason that i can't think of) another connection (if i remember correctly) is that one room in the secret area of the underground bazaar looks kinda similar to the pit room in the pyramid island maze, both are yellow and have a square pit (except one's filled with water). what does it mean? not sure, just something i happened to connect
@@80HP_and_ADHDteam reptile released a lot of BRC's models on their official discord, including the masked person from the first dream, and their model name is "kidFelix", which basically all but confirms that he grew up in old amsterdam and somehow managed to stay young into the present day (maybe by using the tomb-looking thing?)
@@sacredeight Considering all the head transplants felix goes through with no negative side effects, it's possible the world is just working off goofier logic, but I'm thinking that mask might have some sort of life preserving qualities. We see past felix with and without the mask at different points so it'd make sense that he aged some amount while still looking way younger than he should be considering he has memories of old amsterdam
Thanks for making a video detailing all this. This mystery's been fascinating me since the day it was discovered, but I completely forgot about the line about trees being extinct
A good video but a small note. Mirages come from ideas and images of our minds and since old heads quite literally doubt we could ever see them, it is fair to assume that modern has never really interacted with trees in any form so... while mirage theory still stands because there could be word descryption, I have a guess that this little tree corner is real. it might be a small refuge built by someone from those times due to how its hidden but still accessible and has a ladder out
I'm glad you mentioned this. At first I was excited to learn something new, then I saw the area he fell into and was like, "Wait, he could'a just kicked the vent"
Remember finding the area in Pyramid Island. It spooked me the hell out because there's nothing else there to collect or bomb and it looks so unlike everything else in the game. It had this weird creepy nostalgic feeling to it like you're walking through a liminal space.
0:19 That actually makes a lot more sense. New Amsterdam has no trees but Old Amsterdam did; which graphically made it distinct from the other themes in the game. Pretty treasured.
Nice break down. I don't think the "mirage" line refers to the tree however. pretty sure it refers to all the penguins of massive sizes scattered around doing various misterious activities, and the mazelike nature of the containers.
"[...]While this may look like the ruins of Old Amsterdam, it's more likely that this is some sort of mirage, as we know there are no more trees left in New Amsterdam" I think this is actually further proof that we are seeing ruins of Old Amsterdam here
Secrets like this make my day, it makes me hope for a sequel where this is explored upon. These tunnels were deliberate, they expected people to find the second one clearly. I really want to go looking now. I guess I should update my old mods before I even think about playing again.
