I lived in Orkney for 56 years and loved going to the northern isles on the Islander. A wonderful, almost heroic, little plane. Tough as as old boots. And an iconic sound when you are a passenger. Miss hearing it going overhead, as there is no air traffic where I now live. Thanks for posting!
Small passenger aircraft are such fun. No frills, and real life geography lessons. My smallest was in New Hampshire, New England in a four-seat Cessna, then in an eight-seater to Boston's Logan, then an American Airlines' Boeing 747 back home to Bermuda. My smallest and largest ever planes in the same day. Probably my most unusual flight was in early 1944 as a littte tyke with my mother in a BOAC Boeing 314 flyingboat from Bermuda to Baltimore. Alas I was too young to remember it!
We took the plane from Kirkwall to North Ronaldsay when we were in Orkney in the late 70s. The runway was a field then and they literally shood the cows out as the plane approached. For a 6 year old, that made the trip, as the wheels kicked up the cow pats, which hit the propellors and splattered all over the side of the plane! I dined out on that for months! 😂
Loved the pre-flight safety check " has everyone got their seat belt on ?" the pilot earns his keep on that route , talk about multi tasking ! . Looks like none of that Sunday trading hours nonsense up there , it's the Sabbath , deal with it ! Those islanders have to be a special breed to live up there , I can imagine it being a hard life .
What a wonderful view from that plane. And that beach was so pretty. Amazes me that so many of Scotland's beaches look like something you'd see in the Caribbean. I also agree about that airport interior and its decor. Beautiful! Brent said he'd love to take that flight! Glad to see you didn't get blown out to sea in that little tent. My back has told me that tent camping is no longer allowed. 😁
My back is making very similar hints :) I'd love to understand more about why we have such spectacular beaches and colours along our coastline, I'm always blown away by it!
I love flying in the Islander. Like flying in a car! A wonderful plane, providing lifelines in all the northern isles. Watching your Orkney videos has given me a terrible attack of nostalgia for the islands.
Another wonderful wee film, isn't it lovely to fly over all the islands at low altitude, and wasn't it great to have such a super view of the controls and to see out the front of the plane! You had a fine spot on the beach for your camp - did any seals bob up to check you out? I did this flight several years ago and we stayed in the community hostel with pre-ordered evening meal provided by a local lady. Next day there was a coffee morning in the local community centre and a good few of the local folk were there, including the nurse, the GP and the local MP who was having a clinic that day. The home baking at the coffee morning was superb!
It's amazing you can have such an adventure in such little time. Great video Steve and Ailcja. Richard loved being able to watch the pilot, and the scenery was beautiful. Scotland = what a treasure! 🥰
A great wee island adventure for £20 each return, that was amazing, a good short haul trip all round, you both had a good view as well, your overnight stay site was just wonderful, and good facilities nearby what more could you want! even a rainbow 🌈 greeted you on reaching that lovely white Sandy beach 🏝 most enjoyable as always Steve & Alicja thank you for another memorable visit to ‘Bonny Scotland’ 🤗👍
@@steve-marsh Brilliant, I always treated myself to a souvenir every time I visited Scotland, always wanted a magnificent statue of a Stag, when we visited ‘Kingussie’ the local gift shop had one for years, I don’t think anyone could afford to purchase it, including me!🙁 cheers 🍻
I've flown in many aircraft, tiny ones and huge ones, slow ones and very fast ones but flying round the Orkney Islands in the co-pilot's seat of an Islander has been one of the biggest highlights. I would love to do it again. For any aviation enthusiast it's highly recommended!
Can’t tell you how refreshing this is, Steve. Just what we need today.here on the Oklahoma plains with temps in spiraling up to 100F/38C by afternoon. Ah. Just to see a bit of Scotland. Land of our daydreams. Thanks so much for this video. Much appreciated!

@@steve-marsh I'm what's called a "rampie" at Kirkwall Airport. That is to say I work on "The ramp" which is to say the area that the aircraft park on. Anyhoo, the rampie who is operating the Aviramp (disabled access mobile ramp) on the day you head out to Papay is me. And on the day you return one of the two fellas standing at the foot of an Aviramp is me too. Blink and you'll miss me!

Hi Steve or Yazo Stefeno What's marriage got to with the price of bread? Well, just to keep diplomatic channels open between Greece and that wet place above Cumbria I'll answer. I've been married for 14 years. (Can't remember breaking two mirrors). Boom boom. Thanks Les Dawson for that line. Greece would love to see you Guys. Take care and or course regards from Loutraki Greece
And to think people go to the Carribbean for white beaches and blue water!!! We've got it all in Scotland, well nearly all. Could be a bit warmer!!! Great plane trip, the wife totally wants to go to Orkney now so another trip from the Steve Marsh playbook👍 cheers M8🏴🇳🇱
Did add comment but it seems to have been lost!! Anyway I praised your usual very high quality and awarded you a V.G. with a big tick. I saw Alicja clutching the duty free white box you bought her on the flight back. Obviously pilot is good to be able to handle duty frees as well as adding blades in flight HaHa!!
Steve, I loved this! A few years ago my daughter wanted to hike the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia with some friends. She made the trip from New York City to Halifax, NS, and then to Sydney, NS, by plane, with every increasingly smaller planes. It was apparently an amazing trip ( rather funny as she was born in Montreal, where I still live). There seems to be a lot a scenic similarities. I hope you can visit Canada someday
Sounds epic Heather! Alicja and I did the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland in fall of 2018. Wow were the people there friendly! Incredible! We hope to repeat it soon (as it was before the channel) :)
I enjoy the video segments in these small planes so much! About a decade ago I had the amazing opportunity to fly over the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona in a helicopter. It thrilled me and terrified me, in just about equal measure! I hope that someday you will be able to come visit the Desert Southwest in the U.S. when all of the pandemic restrictions are behind us. I doubt there could be a greater contrast to your lovely Scottish isles, but I know that you will love the stark beauty of the red rocks, rugged mountain cliffs, and the endless sand too. Beauty is everywhere if you open your eyes to it.
Those BN Islanders are the aviation equivalent of a Land Rover. Used to love flying in them and their big brother the Trislander around the Channel Islands
a great wee video log, we almost bought a wee farm on Sanday in 1986, sadly we decided not to go ahead with the purchase, something I always regretted, hey ho such is life lol..... would love to get up there and see the island though....cheers :-)

You put the work in to bring us these great interesting videos so we’ll done again & good luck for the next one 🎥 👍
Cheers Michael - it is a lot of work for sure so thanks for mentioning it - but it's an absolute pleasure as well :)
3:21 was just thinking that :) The sound on take off was just magic!
Haha cheers Paul! Aye, I'll never tire of that sound!
Another great video! Thanks for letting us tag along with you.
Any time Philip! Plenty room on that wee plane for us all :)
I remember flying to Broadford Isle of Skye on a Loganair Islander. I returned to Glasgow on a Loganair Twin Otter. I must say i really enjoyed my flights with Loganair. I really wish they had kept their Skye flights on. I know i am not alone in this.
Wow I didn't even know about them - I would've loved to review those flights!
Reminds me of my air trips across the Canadian Arctic in small planes.
Great video again! Not many chances to experience the inter island flights! Kirkwall airport really does look quite nice!
So true - last time I was there I couldn't get a ticket, and even this time we woke up to thick fog, so lucky we weren't flying until the afternoon!
Fab footage.
Love how you are so close to the pilot.
Almost like your own private jet
👍✈
So true, just a very loud shaky private jet :)
I love your film. I love it even more because I'm in it twice!
Whaaaaaaaat?! Love it! Where? :)
@@craigiewatson2695 A pleasure to have you on the video! Thanks and say hi next time I pass through :)
Now this is worth waiting for.❤
Super vid! It brings back fond memories of my time on Orkney.
Is that THE Tim's Travels???? Thank you very much Sir! :)
@@steve-marsh the very same 🤣
Fantastic video content. Thank you. Kirkwall airport changed a lot in 50+ years
Cheers Alex, interesting to hear it!
Thanks for taking us along for the ride! I’ll be in Kirkwall next May, hope to work a flight into my stay.
Oh I really have my fingers crossed for you - even if you book a flight, you never really know until you see what the island weather has in store for you on the day! All the best Linda :)
Brilliant video looks like an amazing trip, you were certainly blessed with the weather.
Cheers! Yeah, from what it can be like, we consider ourselves VERY lucky with this one :)
Paradise. I'm scared of flying but could do that no probs. Added to my bucket list.
Yeah, funnily enough I'm not the best with flying either, but this one was just wonderful!
Great video, as usual. On the bucket list now.
Nice one Philip! :)
And again thanks for a cracking documentary.
Bravo and regards from Loutraki Greece
Thank you so much Francis! Oh we were just saying last night how we'd love a trip to Greece!
@@steve-marsh I am not sure if you are married but anyway hello and thank you for your reply.
Hi Steve or Yazo Stefeno
What's marriage got to with the price of bread?
Well, just to keep diplomatic channels open between Greece and that wet place above Cumbria I'll answer.
I've been married for 14 years. (Can't remember breaking two mirrors). Boom boom.
Thanks Les Dawson for that line.
Greece would love to see you Guys.
Take care and or course regards from Loutraki Greece
Thanks for the hair care suggestion.
Haha your wife has great ideas :)
Excellent thank you...really interesting 👍
Cheers! A fun one to make :)
The duty free shop was very disappointing :D Great comment Gavin, cheers :)
🏴Great steve if only all flying was as simple as that thanks for posting
So true Brian!
Sounds incredible! It would be an absolute dream - I NEED to make it happen :)
Another great video Steve
Thanks Sarbjit 👍
Those BN Islanders are the aviation equivalent of a Land Rover. Used to love flying in them and their big brother the Trislander around the Channel Islands
Totally agree Howard! But yet to experience a trilander!
a great wee video log, we almost bought a wee farm on Sanday in 1986, sadly we decided not to go ahead with the purchase, something I always regretted, hey ho such is life lol..... would love to get up there and see the island though....cheers :-)
Cheers Andy! Don'r regret it though, maybe it just wasn't meant to be :)
