    There will come a time when she realizes that her parents played a larger role in this than she wants to admit. Their compliance, fear of judgment and personal relationships with Berchtold were adult choices that put her in harm's way and she is too forgiving of their part in my opinion.

    I think it's easier for Jan to forgive her parents and put ALL the blame on Berchtold. It's extremely difficult to come to terms with the fact that your second father figure (Berchtold) failed you, let alone your own parents failing you. I think it would've broken her if she didn't shift all the blame onto Berchtold. He was a master manipulator, yes, but that doesn't take all responsibility away from her parents.
    Her parents were adults, they chose to ignore major red flags that most parents would see, they chose to remain naive, they were selfish for "saving" their own reputation at the expense of Jan's safety, and they are part of the reason this happened to her whether Jan can come to terms with it or not. Her mother is certainly more to blame than her father; she made the most horrible and selfish decisions between the two. But if Jan chooses to forgive her parents and that's best for her healing and wellbeing, then that's what she needs to do. She can't go back and change things, so cutting her parents out of her life wouldn't accomplish anything at this point, they would just make things worse for her. So I don't blame her for turning a blind eye to the wrongdoings of her parents and placing all the blame on Berchtold.

    • @semigoatflare7167
      @semigoatflare7167 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes her parents made mistakes and were partially to blame for what happened to her. They were ALL victims of Berchtold’s. They didn’t handle the kidnapping the way that they should’ve partially due to their own transgressions and (the church) their faith. They each were taken in by Berchtold and didn’t want this coming out. So they really didn’t make the best decisions about how to handle the situation.

      Literally all adults have failed her. Even the abusers brother is like oh I knew he was pedophile. Ehm excuse me? They’re all just so nonchalant when they talk about it. This was like watching a old episode of the Twilight Zone. These parents should have been investigated for child abuse themselves. With The lack of judgment by these 2 should deem people unfit to be parents. That a man could sexually seduce a wife, sexually seduce a father, and they are not wise enough to realize that he would do the same to their daughter. Then for the parents to let him be around their child is even more insane. Then your child comes back after months of being gone and you don't nail the windows shut so that he can't sneak back into the home again?! Wow!! Then they drop charges and the mother goes to him and sleeps with the guy after he molested and kidnapped their child. I'm pissed just watching how people don't know how to raise children. Then the mother says she was shocked that the husband could divorce her!! Yet Im sure they look at poor families like crap for being poor. Poor families have their children striped for less than this. So then the mother put her daughter on a plane to see the same man that she herself was having sex with??!! Im about to blow a gasket 48 years later. Not just because of this case but because this very thing is happening today to some child because her worthless parents are behaving just like these people. I will never apologize for being this infuriated about the abuse of a child. Never

    Everything she says is so true. It's just a world full of experts - totally unqualified people professing to know what they'd do, how they'd handle it. The church/society are so quick to shift the blame from the perpetrator. That's why they get off. "He's a kind man, an upstanding citizen, the parents were careless/blind. Only one person is to blame for this. Without seducing the parents, he would have found another way. He might of grabbed her with nobody knowing, he might have waited and lured her on her own. Not only is it not going to stop someone like him, but there is no way of knowing the empty souls he left behind to get to this point.

    I agree with some of the comments here blaming the parents for what went on in front of them and how they treated the situation after Jan was kidnapped. They really allowed him too much freedom with their daughter! The reason they didn’t know what he was trying to do with Janni is bc back then, nobody had heard about sexual predators of children. Things are different these days; I grew up back in the 60s & 70s. You never heard about these things happening back then. However, that doesn’t excuse what they allowed him to do prior to the kidnapping & after. They each made mistakes of a sexual nature with B. So they carried this guilt around and it affected their judgment of how to handle things bc of their faith they didn’t want their secret shame to come out. They were all victims of B’s. I just got done watching the 8 episode limited series of this called “A Friend of The Family”. This new series on Peacock+ was in more detail and you found out and understood a whole lot more than Abducted in Plain Sight! I’d recommend this series to anyone wanting to know more about what really happened. The series was so riveting, I binge watched it from last night until today. I didn’t know that he killed himself until tonight when I Googled it. I also then found out that her father died of bone cancer recently (last year I believe).

      I sooooo agree. And I’m sorry man, I can’t even say it’s gullible or stupidity, cause at that rate, I gotta wonder how they made it to the age they did to have kids and not died in one of those accidents that they have to write warnings on everyday objects on, or like sticking a damn fork in a socket cause if it ain’t stupid, it’s something way worse, you can’t tell me they didn’t have an inkling, an ounce of something telling them this ain’t right, I call complete bullshit.

    In every photo and video she was all over him, I believe she was seeking attention from him that she wasn't getting from her father, and he took it the wrong way.

      I didn’t even think that sexually seducing an entire family was in the realm of possibility. The worst part is that the mother started sleeping with him AFTER THE KIDNAPPING. How can you be attracted to someone who tried to turn YOUR OWN DAUGHTER into a child bride?!?!?!?!?

    He used their religion against them. 100% I don't believe it would've happened if they weren't mormon and he wasn't also. Their guard was down, and thats what predators do.

    i just watched the movie onNetflix and a strange Conclusion came to me that made me realize very often Members of the Church Of Later Saints members are often involved with Abductions ,Murders , and some type of longterm Abuse of Minors i’m aware it happens in many other Religions and in some manners if it has involvemement with Church Elders or leaders it can get swept under the Carpet or kept secretive way too much longer than it should be tolerated IMO i’m not picking on. them specifically but it’s weird that more and more situations have these ties to the Mormon faith ? perhaps it the way the Media covers Religions or does not ? for example. the LoriValllow and Chad Daybell cases , the Murder Case with Jodi Arais and her former Boyfreind ( both of those cases involved Men that were very active in the religion and the Church and this one all of which also appeared to be a Sexually driven perversion that. gave the Male Church leaders gratification that is very regarded as wrong , like Sex with a Minor , Infidelity , and / or somewhat Kinky or Uncoventional Sex Acts between the Participants like that Jodi and Travis participated in Rape role playing bondage ,and Spanking games , the Lori and Chad running around while married to other spouses , the. Murders a plan they conspired to blame on Gods will ? I’m a Christian spent 12 years of going to Christian Schools and i never. heard that lesson ?
