I bought one of the first X100S models back in 2013. It was early in the production run as the serial number is 00272. Despite having a room full of Canon pro bodies & lenses, the X100S is still my most used camera. It has travelled all over Europe with me and been on two USA road trips. It won me the title of photographer of the year in a UK regional newspaper. Great for street photography and anywhere you need to be discreet but still get top quality images.

I actually prefer the X100F. Feels better to hold, has more controls, and is easier to 'work hard' in my experience. The X100V is more prone to overheating or simply getting hot from heavy sunlight on the aluminum top. It's frustrating how both the X100V and the GR3 have heat issues since they're two of my favorite cameras.

Had a GrII for years, loved it so much I had to have the GRIII when it came out. Picked one up and the touch screen focus allows for setting the focus in manual and makes the camera blazingly fast. Sold the GrII and everything was great until it was stolen while in my sling bag.
Local store didn't have one in stock, so I picked up an X100V and loved so much about it that I bought it on-site. Absolutely the closest digital version of my favorite mechanical rangefinder film cameras.
Fast forward few months and even though I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the X100V, I realized I just wasn't shooting as much because, as you said - size matters.
I picked up another GrIII and compared them both for another few months - the GR won pretty much every time. It's just so much more convenient and the form-factor just works.
I sold the X100V a few months later (it's such a little jewel that didn't want to let it go).
No regrets, the GR is in a class of its own.
Btw, that's 3 GR cameras over the span of 8yrs - no dust and no button or wheel issues at all...
    Cheers, and great video btw!

I do get that the Ricoh GR III is a bit fragile in some ways, however the fix for the back scroll wheel problem was solved long ago. It just takes a couple of drops of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), ideally at 99% concentration, in the gap between the wheel and the body (while switched off and battery out of course). This is often also packaged as "electrical contact cleaner" in an aerosol can, but is effectively the same thing. Just 2 or 3 small drops, spin the wheel back and forth a couple of times and it is solved. It is just a dirty contact. Of course the camera should be made to not allow the dirt to get on the contacts in the first place, but it is such an easy fix it should not be the ONLY reason to refuse the camera.
Do NOT use anything that would leave a residue, such as WD40 or any oil based or other solvent cleaners, they will do more damage than good. Isopropyl alcohol is a great de-greaser, evaporates extremely quickly (unlike water) and leaves no residue, which is why it is perfect for this kind of application.
To reduce the dirt in the body / on the sensor issue it is best to keep the camera in a small case rather than a messy lint filled jacket pocket or purse. If they built a more rugged, sealed version of this camera that would survive in a pocket along with your car keys and old candy wrappers, it would be a real winner!

Dee Rosa comin' in hot with the opinions! J/K, I actually really appreciate your perspective.
I have to disagree with you on this. The XE-3 with the 27mm is the alternative. The size is nearly identical, in fact it's a little smaller than the X100V. In my opinion the 40MM equivalent is a better general purpose lens than the 35mm equiv of the 100. But the big advantage is i CAN use other lenses. I can throw on the 18mm pancake for a superwide, and it fits in my front pocket. I can use it as a second body for shoots. The XE3 with the 27 is the alternative for me. The only features I miss are the weather sealing and the flip up screen. (the x100f doesn't have a flip up screen.) And let's be honest, who ever uses an on body flash?

I think you're absolutely right about all of this , EXCEPT that the supply problems with the X100V have made used prices for the X100F 12 or 13 hundred dollars. About the same as the retail price for a new X100V. I think when Fuji catches up on X100V production, the price of used X100Fs will suddenly drop to 5 or 6 hundred, where it should be.
I have an X100T that I've owned for maybe 5 years, and it's just fine. I've preordered an X100V atone of the big New York stores, so when it comes in I'll get it for 1400, which still seems a little high for what it is, but whatever. I can wait.
Absolutely agree with your comments about the older lens. It's perfectly fine for the kinds of things that I actually want to do with the camera, and I'm not clear on why anyone would be doing macro photography, close up and wide open, with a rangefinder style camera. (Unless it's the only camerayou have, I guess.). In fact, I'd guess that Fuji saved a couple of bucks on the original lens design because it didn't occur to them that people would use it close up and wide open.
    Anyway, great video. Subscribed.

Great discussion . Thanks for posting. I’m always confused about one camera or another can suddenly become a “cult camera”. I’m tempted to think that it comes down to the ability of a camera system to use small/ compact lenses . Our old 35mm film cameras offered such nice manual focus sharp compact and reasonably fast lenses .

Not mad at you or your videos, but I'm not shelling $1200+ on any fixed lens camera, ever. Too much can go wrong and the whole camera becomes useless. The X100F should be worth $600 today, unfortunately it is selling for $1100+ and climbing. The X100T cannot be found is decent shape and low shutter count at a decent price. The X70 is also great but too small and button are too cramped. There are no alternatives to the X100V, hence the sky rocketing price. There are however other alternatives, look at Panasonic, Sony, Pentax, and Olympus. The X100V is a hyped up camera that produces great image quality, but then so do many other cameras. The hype was a concerted effort by all those YT Fuji ambassadors. Let's see how prices drop after the release of a new X100 camera.

I think its just the limitations that makes it attractive. Basic, no lens to worry about and its good looking. I owned a xt30 that everyone says is superior. But I sold it as i found fujis lens selection is just a lot smaller than the competition. It also sucked as a hybrid camera. For me sony just made more sense. Better lens selection better video great pictures. However instead i used the money to get a DJI video camera and now just want a super easy basic small camera. No lens's to worry about just a old school documentary style camera. Which the fuji seems to do well? Now unfortunately there is some crazy hype around this camera and its ridiculously priced for what it is. I thought it would have dropped by now being a few years old but its seems the opposite has occurred. With video now covered and stills being the only focus. What is left?

The Sony a7C measures in at only 124 x 71 x 60 mm and has a FULL FRAME (35.6 x 23.8 mm) sensor. The Fujifilm X100V comes in at 128 x 75 x 53 mm and has an APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm) sensor. The Sony 7C "has one of the best autofocus systems currently on the market" (DPReview) and has a huge suite of lenses to choose from. The 2021 Sony FE 24mm F2.8 G is fairly compact, and 24mm is optimal for true candid street photography (35mm barely cuts it). It lengthens the camera to about 90cm, front to back, but that seems to be the only drawback to all the pluses. It can come packaged with the fairly compact FE 28-60mm F4-5.6, which will cover most any other street photography needs. It's incredible that almost nobody is talking about the Sony a7C as an optimal candid street camera. Ever since I bought it, I have monitored every review I can find (especially the Fuji X100V) and do not regret my decision. If Ricoh ever comes out with an improvement on their GR III, I would jump at the chance to compliment my Sony, since it is so tiny. I really don't understand the neglect of the a7C.

    • @TheReasonTroll
      @TheReasonTroll ปีที่แล้ว

@@DeeRosa Not the response I was expecting from a guy who invited “very, very, mean, angry comments,” but I’ll play:
      1) After much deliberation, I did buy one. But am still wondering if I made the right decision and I wonder about what the best alternative is. Your commentary on the Ricoh III was something I have never heard before. Very helpful since, so far, my next camera was surely going to be the next generation Ricoh. Now, I’ll check to see if they solved the dust and wheel problem before buying.
      2) The Sony a7C is not “cute.” It’s a photography tool.
      3) Your feelings deceive you. Leave them out of your analysis.
      4) Your argument is that the X100F is the “ONLY” (emphasis yours) alternative. My argument is that the Sony a7C is a better alternative for some people.
      5) There are advantages of FF sensors that you are disregarding. Comparing standard images on a computer monitor is not one of them. FF sensors have larger pixels that render color better and are more efficient at capturing incoming light. When ISO has to be pushed upwards, the difference between a full frame sensor and an APS-C sensor becomes obvious-even on a computer monitor. This one is big for me with my street photography. I need to shoot with 320-400fps so I often have to push ISO upwards to 800-1,250. When the sun starts going down, my full frame sensor allows me to keep going whereas an APS-C sensor would make me stop due to the difference in image quality.
      6) I hate cropping; rarely did it with film. but I have to admit, I might end up doing so. The higher resolution of a full frame sensor renders better resolution than a smaller sensor when cropping.
But your main emphasis was size. Sony has a huge plethora on high quality lenses to chose from but no real alternative to the size of the noninterchangeable Fuji lenses. My preferred lens for street photography is the latest 24mm from Sony. But this juts out the camera to about 90mm, significantly more than the Fuji cameras. Significant drawback. But for me, the 35mm equivalent angle of the Fuji cameras is also a major drawback. I don't think there is an "ONLY" (emphasis yours) alternative for any camera. It's really about the needs and priorities of the photographer.

Totally, all other Fuji cameras can get the same image quality, but the package is unbeatable. Compare even the XE4 with the same lens with the ND filter and possibility of the tiny flash at 1/2000s shutter. The focal length is a personal choice but I definitely like the 35mm equivalent. Can't wait to see what the next 40mp sensor gets into the same body, so much further cropping opportunities making it feel like a 35mm - 70mm zoom lens.
But once you have the X100V, you don't wanna go back to the F. But at the moment if it's hard to find, the F is definitely is good choice. I had the T, F and the experience was really good.
However I don't agree on the Macro photography, because recently, all newer Fuji lenses have become semi-macro lenses. This is because Fuji acknowledges customers want a nice lens that can also do macro. However, I absolutely agree people shouldn't complain when they already knew what they were getting into.

However, I would disagree with your statement that the X100 will give the same images as the other cameras you mentioned. Some great videos from Rockwell and Booray explain the unique feature of the x100, the leaf shutter and built-in flash that can sync to 1/4000 sec allowing for f2 in bright sunlight. None of the other cameras can get those images. But ultimately, the only alternative is an x100f : )

I have an XT2 which I was finding got more use as I prefer the interchangeable lens option. The sharpness of the lens is definitely better on the v over the 23mm f2 but only really wide open and it's not somewhere I found myself shooting. This trend of people shooting everything wide open is ridiculous, you can always tell those influenced by TH-cam when they shoot everything at f1.2 or f1.4 or whatever the widest aperture is but yeah stop the 23mm f2 down and there is very little difference. Insane how much the v has become this 'greatest of all cameras' thing when it is still 'worse' as a camera than many for similar or even cheaper prices. The power of the internet and hype.

(There are very good reasons Leica offered the original CL (and later CLE with Minolta) with only the 40/2 and 90/4. The 40 is how we naturally 'see' the world we focus on. A 27 in APS-C format offers us the same perfect angle. Would I prefer an f/2? Yes of course, but relying on ONE STOP higher ISO to get the shot isn't really an issue any more.
And I do agree if someone WANTS to deal with the limitations of an X100 to take advantage of the leaf shutter, the built in ND and the optical eye level 'hybrid' finder, the 'F' is almost the same camera, but without a flip LCD.
