When hatpins were popular, women had long hair & wore their hair in fancy buns & so they had to have longer pins cause of the thickness of their hair, size of the bun & the thickness of the hat.
02:29 Stickpin, no doubt. Too short for a hatpin. If it has a "clutch" on the end it's generally a stick pin. 05:50 Stick pins, not had pins. Meant for mens' ties. Hatpins were generally costume; tie pins were often real. 07:17 1890s bar pin Hat pin lenghs: The 1890s style pin went through the hat and through the piled hair over a push-up "rat" thingie made of the woman's shed hair, and then out the other side. Think Gibson Girl hair. I think the long ones were outlawed after being used as weapons against men one time too many...for the attacking men, anyway. 14:17 Yup, hat pins.
The 2nd one that she pulled out with the cap on the end is a stick pin that you wear on your clothes !!! But it can be worn on a hat. Those were very popular in the 70's & 80's & my mom, sisters & I wore them !!! I still have 2. 🙂
The ones with the covering on the end were called stick pins in the early 1980’s and they were worn on blazers for women or on cowl neck sweaters. Today a well-dressed gentleman would wear a stick pin with flowers on their lapels.
The ones with ends are stick pens form the 70/80’s hat pins stuck in your hair. The longer ones are the older ones that were outlawed because they were used as a weapon
George the nomad knows alot about hat pins. He is is a walking encyclopedia. I think she is looking for lapel pins that can be used on a coat, sweater, scarf or hat for decorative purpose or to help keep it closed. I use old costume jewelry to decorate my hats. They work great .

Hat pins kept the hat on the head
Thanks for the journey!
The shorter ones are not hat pins. They are lapel pins. Hat pins do not have closers either.

I like how you are no pressure..
Very attentive...also how you get excited about other finds...that was fun
You can use an earring back for the bottom of some stickpins.
The shorter pins were popular as cowl pins.
The hat pins went through the hair that was put into the hair bun and out the side or the back
