  • Calculation of MBBR Moving bed bioreactor || Sewage (Wastewater) treatment plant calculation: The MBBR processes are used in municipal sewage treatment for BOD removal and nutrients removal.
    The reference to this video is "Metcalf Eddy, wastewater engineering, 4th edition, chapter 5".
    Moving Bed Biological Reactor (MBBR) is based on the biofilm carrier elements. Several types of synthetic biofilm carrier elements have been developed. These biofilm carrier elements are floated in the mixed liquor in the aeration tank and are kept floating by the air from the diffusers. They have a tendency to accumulate at the top zones. Hence wall-mounted mixers propel the media downwards so that they again float and are in circulation in the mixed liquor. They are retained by suitably sized sieves at the outlet.
    This process is intended to enhance the activated sludge process by providing a greater biomass concentration in the aeration tank and thus offer the potential to reduce the basin volume requirements. They have also been used to improve the volumetric nitrification rates and to accomplish the denitrification in aeration tanks by having anoxic zones within the biofilm depth. Because of the complexity of the process and issues related to understanding the biofilm area and activity, the processes design is empirical. There are now more than 10 different variations of the processes in which a biofilm carrier material of various types are suspended in the aeration tank of the activated sludge process. There are many examples of such activated sludge treatment process with suspended biofilm carrier in the world.
    Advantages:
    i. These processes can enhance the activated sludge process by providing a greater biomass concentration in the aeration tank and thus offer the potential to reduce the basin size requirements.
    ii. Packing materials can maintain the concentration of nitrifying bacteria in the aerobic tank at a high level, and the nitrification reaction proceeds efficiently. Hence, these processes can improve the volumetric nitrification rates and accomplish the denitrification in aeration tanks by having anoxic zones within the biofilm depth.
    iii. These processes can be used for the upgrading of existing STP, especially when space is an issue.
    iv. These processes can upgrade the plant by reducing the solids loading on the existing sedimentation tank

    Nice work, MBBR tank maximum holding time must be 6 - 8 hours but here 2 hours holding the tank, is sufficient this volume 50m3 for 500 kld STP.

    There is some error... Media surface is showing no link with media required.
    Check on Excel sheet
    You'll get same media required at every value of media surface area.

    How do you calculate MLSS on MBBR since the bacteria are on biofilm? What is the process you used? Thanks!

    First and foremost, a very good explanation.
    However, can the BOD loading rate (from CPHEEO manual) be applied to pilot/lab sized MBBR as well? To be more specific, the flow rate of 1-10 ml/minute. If not, where can they be found (or how can they be custom calculated?). Please, keep on doing this. Very informative.

      Yield based on BOD assuming a conversion factor of 1.62 g COD/g BOD = (0.42 g VSS/g COD) /(g BOD /1.62 g COD) = 0.68
      MLVSS to MLSS ratio is 0.8
      And COD of cell tissue is
      COD = ∆O2/ ∆C5H7NO2 = 5*32 (mol wt of 5O2) / 113 (mol wt of C5H7NO2) = 1.42 g O2/ g cells
      For above reaction and more details, please go through chapter 7 of Wastewater Engineering treatment and reuse by METCALF & EDDY, fourth edition.

    hi.....could you please explain :
    1. what is MLVSS & MLSS?
    2. how did you reach the value 0.8 upon dividing MLVSS & MLSS?

    • @MeenuJainLalitpur
      @MeenuJainLalitpur  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MLSS is solid part of aeration tank, MLSS contains activated microorganisms, digested solid, volatile and suspended solids.
      MLVSS is mixed liquor volatile suspended solids, which is 80% of MLSS mixed liquor suspended solids. That's why I took value as 0.8
