    The traditional umbrellas really put it over the top, they looked cool, larger than life.

    Just 3 years ago, but so many already retired: Yoshikaze, Gagamaru, Orora, Takayoshitoshi. Surely, Ikioi is going to retire soon, having dropped to makushita.

    • @petezm

      He was too fat to fight.
      He had no equilibrium
      The best rikishi are never too fat

    • @brodhax6148
      @brodhax6148 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@petezm I agree. The greatest are skill based. Harumafuji was both smaller and lighter than most, but he was incredibly skilled. Hakuho isnt the heaviest, although he is very tall. I dont think that gets enough recognition. He can use his long arms to keep opponents at bay.

    • @petezm
      @petezm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@brodhax6148 exactly!
      People often forget about equilibrium and used to focus just on weight.
      For example, asashoryu had a medium weight (for some he was a lightweight) and was virtually unbeatable.
      Hakuho is heavier than asashoryu, but he still lighter than much other rikishi and used to win everyone.
      I think its because 2 main reasons:
      1) they know mongolian wrestling (very similar to sumo, but without a dohyo. It means you must throw your opponent to win). With that, they know how to break opponet's balance to throw them or to force them out.
      2) they have balanced bodies (weight and height). Both (hakuho and asashoryu) are heavy guys, but not too heavy. Their weight don't disturb their balance and explosiveness.
      You see guys VERY fat that can't do anything. People think they have future in sport but in reality they don't. To have a future, they need to lose weight and gain explosiveness.
      Ex: a guy with 185 cm should weight AT MOST 150 kg. (Sorry but in my country we dont use pounds but kilos. And we dont use feet but centimetres, so for me its easier to think using those)

    • @brodhax6148
      @brodhax6148 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@petezm I wish Ichinojo had a shred of competitive fire, he would unbelievable. I remember 2 tournaments ago when he went 14-1, he was a monster. Hes a good example of a really heavy guy, who also has great balance. The problem with Ichinojo is he has no heart. Hes not a warrior.
      Tochinoshin is another favorite. Hes very frustrating because hes so inconsistent. Tochinoshin is arguably the strongest rikishi in Sumo. He is SO POWERFUL. But hes one who has balance problems.

    • @petezm
      @petezm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brodhax6148 yeah
      Ichinojo has the tools to be great, but his personality is really shy. It seems he doesnt want to win it all, just being in the makuuchi division is ok. He enjoys the rikishi life and he's ok with no championship since he continues with his beloved routine.
      And Tochinoshin...really really poweful! But as you said, inconsistent.
      Hope he gets 12+ wins next tournament!

      @@kleigh6784 Igor is not correct, they are actually saying a very abbreviated Ohayou Gozaimasu, which when dudes are talking, especially in sports, gets shorter and shorter until it sounds like they're saying, Ossu basically - its just a polite way of saying Good Morning basically.
      The word Igor was talkin about is Irrasshaimase which means welcome.

      its called a yukata

    • @mi888t
      @mi888t 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, not special to rikishi.
      They wear yukata (made of cotton instead of silk, and wear no Nagajuban underneath to layer) and that's the same as what we the regular people wear for summer festivals (bon odori).
      Some rikishi you see in this video wear kimono ensemble with Haori jackets, or Hakama (skirt looking bottom) and Haori. Hakama style is considered to be more formal.
      All those, Yukata, Kimono, Hakama, and Haori are tailored the same way as how the regular people would wear.
      By the way, rikishis gift each other with their stable or sumo name customary dyed on their yukata fabric. So you see rikishi walking around wearing yukata embellished with their friends stable name.
