    I have been using the pipe dope version of "Expando" for at least 50 years, the very best product for use when absolutely no leakage is acceptable. Also works well to get one more life out of damaged, old, or obsolete parts. My last application was to save two damaged 316L stainless steel tanks with warped, galled, and cross-threaded 4" male pipe thread outlets. Even with limited time and even less access space, Expando easily sealed the valves on perfectly the first try. Great stuff!

    Happy to see breathing protection! Most people don't understand the long term effects of breathing silicates. NOT pretty. A friend that used to run marathons was hospitalized due to a single exposure to silica dust.. = silicosis. No more marathons. No more running, period! Labored breathing for the rest of his now shortened life. The stuff gets into your lungs as a dry powder. Moisture creates a concrete like mess in all of the little air exchange sacks in your lungs. There is no way to remove it! Now, this mid 20s athletic man is surviving as if he has terminal emphysema. He was an excellent weldor, but now is restricted to only welding where EXCELLENT ventilation AND hot, restrictive respirators are available... and few job sites offer both. AUDIENCE !!! PAY ATTENTION !!! Dust from concrete and rocks can be deadly. Don't do it... Don't allow others, that are unaware, to do it. PLEASE...

      You are 100% on the money John, I noticed early on the everybody that I would meet that worked in drilling and blasting had compromised breathing, I started out with just a basic half face respirator, then went to the best full face unit that I could buy and then vacuum the dust at the source also. Sorry to hear about your friend, did he have a very large exposure? is / was he a smoker?

    Awesome stuff. Is Expando available commercially, or do you need special permits to purchase or use it?
    I’m planning on digging a fire-bunker on my farm (have council permission) in Tassie. Unfortunately, my property is almost completely 1-2m clay ( in places, no clay) over mudstone, which has metamorphosed at a meter or two further down. Would like to dig approximately 4-5m deep, but that would necessitate cutting around 3m into the mudstone. I have most of the toys ( the good ones - demo-drill/hammer, hydraulic-teaspoon as you call them) but don’t wish to use explosives, as I believe it would take multiple shots over many weeks to reach the depth I need.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Expando is just a cement based product, no special know how or permits required - some good amount of care is needed though as it is very caustic and will burn eyes and lungs if you are not careful. For Tassie you will need the cold variant - SCA- 3 and something that will drill 38mm holes, give John a call - expando.com.au/

      Yes, if the hole is making water slowly, just mix and have ready to pour, blow the water out with compressed air and a blow pipe and pour immediately. If the water is permanent, e.g. returns as soon as it has been blown out, you must first sleeve the hole with some 40mm plastic lay flat tube and pour into the tube, the very heavy chemical mix will displace the water. You can see me using the plastic sleeve in this video for pouring into near horizontal holes, the same tube is used for wet holes - th-cam.com/video/nWKP7NW3c1g/w-d-xo.html

    What is expando

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Expando is similar to dexpan and ecobust and other similar products, looks like cement powder, you mix it up with water, pour it into the holes and it expands and cracks the rock. - www.expando.com.au/what-is-expando

    Does the explosion or the implosion break the rock?

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The explosive breaks the rock with a massive shock wave and the chemical cracking agent slowly expands and splits the rock.

      @RUNDNB85 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      what Implosion? that is a explosion the expansion of gas, not the collapsing of it, there is a huge difference between the two.

    why the gasmask?

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Three reasons Simon, despite using a pretty good dust collection system, you never get it all and any amount of stone dust in your lungs is very bad news, secondly in order to extend the working life of my drills I introduce a lot of oil into the airline, this is not good in my lungs. Thirdly the full face protection keeps all of the stone chips out of my eyes - this is a constant issue when using a rock drill and safety glasses alone do not prevent all instances. The mask is also an excellent protection when mixing the chemical cracking agent - this product has a PH of 14 and will burn your eyes and lungs.
