  • I would say there's nothing worse than having to deal with waste plumbing on a boat, but I know there are many worse things. But this has to be in the top 10 at least. Our Electroscan has been struggling to properly treat waste for a couple of months. We've done all the routine maintenance and tried different brands of solar salt and nothing has worked. As a last resort we decided to open up the unit to try to fix the problem. If you've ever wondered what the inside of an Electroscan looked like here's your chance to see for yourself.

Great job as always, watched your videos as I was restoring a 78 T37 myself. Thanks for the great vids!

What a great video. You made it seem so simple to do, thanks. BTW, love the cat, Twitchell😊

Thanks from down under Australia Rich. Great video well explained. Our unit is suffering the same issue we will get on to it.
    Cheers BB

What kind of acid did you use to clean the electrode plates?

    • @svrambleon

Just muriatic acid (HCl), like you would use in a swimming pool.

@@svrambleon Thanks for the response. Did you dilute it like it says in the operation manual for cleaning the system? Or use it straight from the jug at 31.45%

Rich, I have gone back and forth with the idea of composting vs. treatment. A friend has a composting head and loves it. I have used it and must say it is pretty bullet proof and does not stink. Yes, you basically have a litter box but doesn’t seem any worse than cleaning a treatment system or dealing with a holding tank.
Pick your poison I guess. I think I will probably go composting route in the end. Just so simple.
    Have you considered composting?

Phil, Jeni and I went round and round about this very subject when we started our refit 7 years ago. As you're well aware, T37s have horrible holding tanks and waste plumbing systems. Unless you count pump-outs, we opted not to have to deal with our off-cast more than once. Something about rowing a bucket of composted human waste ashore for burial on land never much appealed to either of us. Guess it really doesn't matter once you're 3 miles offshore. Environmentally, I suppose it's six of one; half-dozen of the other. Sure there are NDZs all over the globe, and for good reason, but I wonder if the Governments implementing these strict environmental standards would feel differently about some cruiser paddling up and digging a cat-hole on the beach?

SV Ramble On yep, totally get it! You seem to have done a lot more research then I have. I was under the assumption I could just dump the solids into the water since they had decomposed. Sounds like I need to do some more research before making a final decision. Thank you so much for the additional data.

Easy enough to get rid of all waste(d) plumbing on a boat. I don't understand the obsession with duplicating on-shore and domestic sewer systems on the water. Adding human waste to water and storing and processing it is disgusting as you can see. There is a better way. You know what it is :-)
