The second one likely had many more petticoats underneath it (or, depending on the time period, maybe a hoopskirt) to give it a much fuller appearance. Historical undergarments go a long way in the shaping of a piece.

LOL My favorite dress is the third. ❤❤❤ That collar on that dress is just stunning… it's not as in your face attention grabbing as blood red or canary yellow. The paintings make them otherworldly, yet the work gone into the dresses themselves is as worthy. Having them together speaks volumns on the eye of the painter. Long before photo manipulation!
Both a beautiful works of art in their own right. The fact that the dresses have been so well preserved is astonishing. Thanks to the paintings the dresses will be preserved in spirit long after they rot away
The yellow piece looks very detailed & has beautiful beading. The subtle discoloration in certain areas of the hem, makes me think this dress is an original & not just a replica. Mind you, I am no expert in this field. They are all beautiful dresses, if they are original piece from their era. Then their beauty certainly doubles.
It’s John Singer Sargent. He was known for this and often changing the clothes when he painted, like color or neck lines or length, so the portrait would look better, whether or not the patron agreed
Gives me Cinderella step mother vibes !! 😂😂👀 it’s still very regal, and the craftsmanship exquisite..it’s a blessing to be able to see these things in real life..reminds us that our past was VERY Tangible and VERY real!! ❤

FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE THAT SAW THIS EXHIBIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you look closely at the Lady Macbeth dress?! It had hundreds of actual beetle shells sewn onto it to make it glitter on stage I got to go to the opening night of the show and listen to the curator speak, it took *ten years* to find all these pieces and borrow everything.
Keep in mind, the dresses actually looked much better back then and theyve become worse with time. The same could be said for the paintings but usually not to such a degree.
❤ Those beautiful FRAMES. The frames enclose the painting as the dress encloses the figure. See the frame & the dress doing the same thing at the same time. 🔥 🔥 ❤
I mean those dresses were modeled off of somebody else's body that's usually how dresses were made back then tailor fit... unless if they were of peasant garbs but then they would not be in a painting unless the background or to show off the work life😅😅 so all in all it really depends do you look like the person in the painting😅

Yes, it's a heartwarming painting because of the intimate scene. Dress here is the middle layer normally, so either is worn wrong, or the scene is too intimate, like a husband and wife, or a mom and her kids, enjoying some music. Small family scene, no grandparents, because respect dictates a belt on it. A girls night would necessitate one to button up and wear a fancy belt (thus close major part of the front of the dress.) Bust areas innerwear could be seen/could be left unbuttoned, which is normally what was done in house. But open belt area is like showing a whole chemise or wearing a bathing suit in your button up dress without butonning any. Only inner family appropriate.
That first dress is in flawless condition and gorgeous. The second dress was modeled better by the painting, I think entirely by her pose.
The second one likely had many more petticoats underneath it (or, depending on the time period, maybe a hoopskirt) to give it a much fuller appearance. Historical undergarments go a long way in the shaping of a piece.
@@stringcheese6833 that's exactly what I was going to say!
The 2nd one seem unfinished or altered
What is the name of the second one? Gorgeous art
Also keep in mind that these dresses are over hundreds of years ago so ofc they look more colourless than in the pictures
The dresses are beautiful but in the paintings, just wow.
Two art forms on display, how wonderful.
It seems those dresses are quite old..
I so totally agree with you, those paintings... just WOW!

I really really like this! Sometimes I forget paintings are of real things and subjects so it's really awesome to see the painting and the subject.
You just say how I say😊😮😊
Crazy to think that both the painting and dress exist but the ppl don’t 😢
Hi I have no friends 😢😢😢
@@GrianaArandeMy thoughts exactly
Is crazy theses dresses still exist even through the people who warn them past way an long time ago
The outfits are simply garments, the ladies are what bring these dresses to life!
Absolutely! The talent of the artist (John Singer Sargent) brings the ladies, and the dresses to life, and makes them immortal.
Well said 😊
Yes the second dress looks amazing on the lady😊
they say that fashion goes in a circle. please good lord let something similar to these be normalised within my lifetime.

They do have them now. You're just WAY to poor to be involved in a lifestyle involving them

Thank you!
Thanx buddy I wish everyone mentioned the song in description.
Thank you!! ❤
Love you 😘
Einaudi is extraordinary ❤
Imagine them when they were still new.... stunning.
Let’s also take into account that these dresses were not just worn plain but styled with jewelry as we see in the paintings

number three looks really cool like a 1920s movie medieval villain
Yes! I was thinking it would look perfect on a vampire queen or something. Lol
The Medieval period is not in the 1920's 🤦🏼♀️.
@@tessdurberville711 like in 1920s movie depicting a medieval villain i thought this would have been obvious
It screamed cersie lannister
Painted in 1925, and the dress design resembles a 16th-century portrait of the queen of Spain, so... spot on!

Except the last one, doesn't look like the same dress

True but we also must apreciate the talent of the artists. :)

The same could be said for the paintings but usually not to such a degree.
Also the undergarments, very important for the structure.
As well as the fact clothing (for the most part) looks better on an actual person than a a still mannequin.
Stunning!
the paintings are beautiful but there's no comparison.
Jewels and gowns.. 🥰
That third dress, that woman was definitely a villian.
She is a murderer… of my expectations ^_^

Definitely the paintings....the original, authentic, genuine and exquisitely worn by the model artist.

This is such a great idea for an exhibition. People in paintings always feel imaginary. Seeing clothes really makes them real in the painting. Fab!
