  • A Look at How I Up-Keep my Personal Fishing Gear When Maintenance is Required!
    It's been years since i redid my Surf 8K's. At the Izuo Brothers Product show Okuma's Product director John Bretza gave me these same 2 units & report what i think of them. During these past years they've caught Jacks to Bonefish & Threadfins both day & night.
    This is a long distance surf caster. The high oscillations packs the line lay very tightly. Less friction of line peeling of the spool means you'll get a longer cast. Of course using braid means more yardage due to its thinner diameter. And that thinner diameter means you can pack on more yardage compared to monofilament or fluorocarbon.
    But the clearer line means less chance of "finicky" fish taking the lure/bait. So it's a trade-off. At first i had braid backing to a mono top shot. Now i'm going all 80lb Eminent Braid on one and all 30lb Monofilament line on the other by Soft Steel. I also sprayed & cleaned the inner reel's workings. Hardly any salt crystals! I'm sure this was because i always rinse my gear off after every outing & that the 2-sets of inner brushes are doing their job. Great design on these John Bretza!

      I' haven't used it in years. Unfortunately. I'm always testing new gear before it's released and rarely have the opportunity to dig out of storage items that i've stored away. But now with iCast around the corner all new items will be going there. Plus my car went down so that's giving me time to catch-up on re-lubing reels & re-spooling line as i try to service my own equipment as much as possible.

    That’s an amazing cast brah. They don’t have or spin line here with the machine in Vietnam (cost millions to ship something here so it would cost me 5 times the price to buy it and have it sent here) but thank God being near Japan means I have access to top quality gear and line. You’d be amazed at the vintage Japanese fishing gear I’ve run into here.

      I'm sure! Back in the day i put a wooden chopstick between my toes with the spool on it and manually cranked it on with my toe tips acting as my stopper.

      Japan has some COOL stuff. I love the semi-clear lures & grubs. But they spend too much on packaging & presentation. You know what i mean. I was flown up to Japan recently by a company that wanted me to help represent them. I did turn them down nicely at the time. For the companies i do work with they know i'm loyal.

    aloha scuba chris, would a long cast reel be worth buying if you’re only throwing lures with a max weight of 1.5 - 2oz but want the most distance? or would it be better to use a regular reel for that application?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I guess it would depend on my finances. If you choose correctly you could get a reel that you could use for both tossing lures as well as surf casting. There's 2 spinners that i own now that can do both. The Rockaway 6000 for medium applications & the Rockaway 8000 for large. Both are long distance casters that i use for tossing lures to surf casting. And both are under a 100.

    Geat videos you have. I have among others 6 Okuma different size reels (8K, Flite Surf that comes with the 3 spools, Azores, Azores XP, Cedros and Ceymar XT), and I see that you use in the spools (front and rear) Silicone Lubricant. You do prefer it to grease?

      I rarely re-pack with grease as everything i get is brand new. If it somehow gets accidently submerged then i'd re-grease it. But just to service my own yearly yes, i use silicon.

    Hello Chris , a serious question from a senior fisherman, i also need a reel for long casting , this reel is great but i also have my eyes on The new shimano Aero Technium MgS XSD , has anyone done any comparison between the two to see which one casts longest , suffering with arthritis on my shoulders i am looking for all the help i can get this is why i am asking , thank you for all the helpful reviews ,

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What's affecting you more? If weights an issue i'd go with the Shimano. Lighter units but cost around 2x more. Some have extra spools but the lineage is reduced on those free spools. But if 26.9oz is ok then i'd go with the Surf 8K. I've had the Ultegras before, the 5500, 10K & 14K. The 10K was to close to the 14K size wise and i wouldn't rather use the 10K because of that. The 14K bent out at the base of the shaft. To much weight when the spool is full, plus i had a 30lb Eagle Nose on (Shimano did take care of that). But the 5500 was a good solid unit. So far i've had no issues with the 2 Surf 8K. I used the heck out of them for over a year before storing them. I recently got my Rockaway 8000, another long distance caster. Haven't had the time to field test it more than a day though. Only casting at the soccer field. The Rock 8K weighs only 18.7oz. Both units are roughly the same price. Hope this helps. Arthritis is no joke. Sorry to hear this. If it was me i'd get the new Rockaway 8000. Only a $100. Lighter then the other choices. 33lb max drag. Would that be enough for you?

      @@ScubaChris thank you Chris, for taking your time to help me , i understand that you must get a lot of questions and it takes time to try and help everyone , i am not trying to keep the conversation going just trying to put you in the picture with the following , never owned quality long cast gear , i have made in china eBay gear + plus older shimano and daiwa reels that works fine for (pan ) fish and the odd better one but i do a lot of maintenance and this is why gear lasts , i find that for my height 5 ft 10 a long rod doesn't give me the distance that a 10ft with a light reel and 12 lb mono does , i struggle to load the longer rods 12ft+ when im casting same set up , so it looks like i need lighter outfits but i hate carbon because it is so darn fragile unlike fibreglass , any way the rockaway 8000 looks like the reel for me being lighter and so much cheaper as well , i will worry about a new rod to match with it some other time, don't want to take up more of your time , thank you for all the great videos , love to see you do some catch and cooks if your into that sort of thing if not that's fine , take care of your self and enjoy life , until next time bye for now.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rafiktunangler6190 I never made a video on that because it is very basic. If your line is bunching up on top add a shim, maybe 2 might be needed. Add one first to try. I believe i already told this to you. Over time you may need to add another one as they may compress in time from heavy usage. I've never had to do do this, ever, because i spool my own reels. If you can't do this bring it into a shop & see what they'll charge to redo this for you. During COVID i reverse spooled over 100 of my reels out of boredom. Very time consuming project. Saved myself a lot of money & time by doing this. Take your spool knob off, pull your spool out, place the shim on the bottom by aligning it down the spool shaft, replace the spool, screw back the knob. Like i said very simple @rafiktunangler6190.

      I never manually crank my handle to engage the auto bail feature when incorporated into the reel's design. That drastically lowers the longevity of the bail arm's moving parts.
