I can relate to this whole video. Even though I don't wear goth make up, the thing is, it's what I wear. I like to wear t shirts and bicycle shorts outside but my mom thinks I look dirty or unattractive. The same can be said whenever we go to church. She never likes the dresses I wear because they look old, and I personally see nothing wrong with them. She's afraid I'll embarrass her in front of her church friends. Clearly that's their problem, not mine. I care more about being comfortable than looking like an idiot in front of strangers.

In NYC where I live at especially in the lower East side and West side of Manhattan on the East Village and West Village and Chinatown and canal street I always see a lot of Goth people in that area and always give them a big smile Everytime I see them and they pretty much smile at me back and you're right a lot Goth people are very cordial and sweet

As a black Goth dude I always feel uncomfortable sometimes, even though I look like a 5'5 slim guy who looks like they can't harm anyone people still make you feel on edge going into a store, but yeuh.. I should expect it. I've been listening to Goth Rock and Metal Music for 15 years and I dress not to crazy, but crazy enough lol..
I understand it's not what most people are use to, or some people MAY be jealous or laugh because they can't pull the look off themselves if they tried to dress the same way... 😥

I have been a part of goth society for nearly 35 years and will never change. Rule number TWO.. I look the way I do FOR ME because its what I LIKE !! The only person I need to impress with my appearance is the one I see in the mirror. Rule number ONE is what I live by... "I would rather be rejected for who I am than to ever be accepted as someone I am not". Sex is between the legs, gender is between the ears. I am over 50 and male ON PAPER. I am not made of PAPER. I also only want to cause peace, love and harmony in my own life as well as those around me. There is no true "good" or "evil". Those things usually come from a forced belief in religion which I rejected a very long time ago. Hugs all around.

You shouldn't be judgemental, but should be skeptical. Giving the example of black people and racism, it's very wrong to, say, falsely accuse a black person, treat them with disrespect, or refuse to serve them, but if they're next to you in the bus you'll cover your pockets. Nothing against the person, but you're just watching out for yourself. Now don't make it obvious, otherwise the person will notice and get hurt, but you can't help but be skeptical of the situation.

There is a difference between assuming someone is evil and being skeptical. The secuirty guard arresting her was definitely in the wrong, but the act of simply watching her more closely is not wrong, but purely statistical. If there is a statistical correlation between looking like that and theft, then watching the person more closely OBVIOUSLY WITHOUT FALSELY ACCUSING, is the right thing to do. Also, you can't just dress any way and expect people to still view you the same way. Sure, you can live true to yourself, dress however you want and be a great person, but you have to know that people will judge you for it, and you just have to accept it.

Great story. It’s always good to never judge people before getting to know them so they’ll avoid mistakes. Mistakes like with the security guard assuming that Winnie stole something cause of how she looked and let the other girl go without searching her. Just cause someone is handsome or pretty looking doesn’t always mean they’re a good person. Looks can be deceiving after all.

To be honest, when I was a teenager, I used to dress like a “cholo,“ and unfortunately, I was always stereotyped when my friends at the time frequently pickpocketed and stole things from stores… “never judge a book by its cover!”
Yeah just like the mother said just because she dresses differently dose not make her a bad person because like I had a friend in college who is a goth and of course she always got judged for how she looked and every time I would defend her because she is my best friend and also cus she has gone through some difficult family issues at the time so of course I stand by her side
We have a son with severe autism and we got the cops called on us all the time for stupid things even when he was little. People didn't understand he had a disability that made him act out especially because he is non verbal. They over reacted all the time.

There should be a part 2 to this where Winnie meets a boy with a deformed face(Rocky Dennis type) where he really really gets judged harshly and goes through a whole lot worse than Winnie despite the fact that it was out of his control in being born with a deformed face and Winnie shows him lots of compassion and empathy and let's him know that she gets judged a lot too for her gothic looks.
The deformed boy tells her that at least she can change the way she looks if at least for one day she gets rid of her gothic looks and dresses casually in athletic attire that people would no longer judge her anymore and would be very genuine and nice to her since she can change her looks where as the boy with deformed face can't and stuck with that deformed face and couldn't change it at least for one day if he wanted to.
