WOW!! I was diagnosed with HIV on March 22nd, 2003 while living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida ... two weeks later, I was back in my bedroom where I grew up believing I was at death's door (my doctors at Johns Hopkins later confirmed I was within 48 hours of passing away) when my mom & dad (who were divorced & both re-married) came into my bedroom (I was only 31 years old at the time) & I thought for the first time my dad was going to tell me he loved me. He came to my bed, looked me right in the face and said "NO! I'm not going to say it!" ... my mother, who deserved an Oscar for her performance, "clutched her pearls" & said "FRED!" ... my dad replied, "NO SHARON, I refuse to say it because he is not going to die." In my head, I was screaming "you BLEEPING ass****!! I'm dying and you can't give me the one thing I want and need to hear!" They exited my room. As you can tell, I did not die but because I did not know the entire story until almost 17 years later, I truly thought my dad did not love me & two weeks later, I started calling myself Erick instead Fred (since I was named for my dad). My mom would die exactly 2 weeks before my 40th birthday in June 2011 (June 12th - June 26th) & for the last two months of her life she begged me to forgive my dad - I refused & even had the audacity to tell everyone that he better not even show up at her funeral. On April 30th, 2019, I was diagnosed with cancer (it has since gone into stage 4) & a few hours later had found out my dad died exactly 9 months prior on July 30th, 2018 and no one told me about it. I spent the last 15 years of his life not speaking once to him. After making a life-long dream come true by appearing on "Wheel Of Fortune" after trying for 36 years, I made it to the final round, where I choose "EVENT" & wound up solving "AN EPIC JOURNEY" to win $37,000 for a total of $61,311 in cash/prizes. I thought that was my final chapter - but I would be reminded that it was only the beginning. I was able to re-connect with my younger half-brother (he's about 18 years younger than me & the only child that my dad had with my stepmother). He lives in Alaska & during a video call in September 2020, we got on the subject of how many times we saw our dad cry. He said the first time was that Saturday night in April 2003 after he came out of my bedroom (my stepmother, stepfather and brother all were in the living room & had no idea what had been said/done in my bedroom), he told my stepmother and brother that they needed to leave immediately & when my dad got into his car, according to them both, he broke down very extremely & they didn't know why ... I was able to put the pieces of the puzzle together. My mom called my father when I came home from Fort Lauderdale & instead of letting her take me to the hospital, I told my mom I didn't think I was going to live past the weekend & wanted to die in my bed. She called my father and asked him to not tell me he loved me, believing that it would piss me off to the point that I would fight to live just to prove him wrong. Though he did not want to do that, he knew by sacrificing his relationship with me permanently, he agreed to do it to save my life. Then what I did 2 weeks later & now fully understand why my mom begged and begged me to forgive him before she died.
