This was the last set that Jørn Thomsen worked on before he passed. If you don't know, he designed almost every 90s space faction sets you can think of as well as many other LEGO classics. He started working at LEGO in 1986 and worked right up until the time of his passing in early 2023. Jørn calculated all the gear ratios for this orrery by hand(!) and the fact that he took so many of us on unforgettable memories into imaginary LEGO Space worlds to then finish his LEGO (and real life) journey with a set representing the celestial mechanics of his home system, is just a work of cosmic poetry. Vale Jørn!
🖤💜💙💜🖤
Tiago likely knows him in person, as he was a LEGO Designer too.
Remember the Ideas ship in a bottle set (92177)? This guy was the LEGO Designer for it. The "TC" initials even stand for his name.
I just checked and he designed many of my favorite sets! All Western! Ice Planet! A large Aquazone base!
@@taqresu5865 I'm sure he did know Jørn. Shame he didn't mention it in the review, which is why I commented.
Yeah, I remember the controversy when Tiago put his own initials on the Ship in a Bottle instead of Jake Sadovich's (the fan designer who submitted the idea). Tiago has his initials in other places too - mainly gravestones 😅
@@maddadbricks Yeah, though the funny thing is, Tiago didn't have any part in putting his initials on a gravestone, that was his colleagues' idea lol
RIP Jørn.
I remember seeing someone sharing a photo of Jorn, amongst friends with this set but I didn't manage to find it, that's why I didn't mention but I am totally aware!
I briefly met him when I did a week long "internship" for the Mindstorms team. He wasn't a man of many words, but I got to see how brilliant he was with Technic and simple yet effective mechanisms. How poetic that this was his last set, a true testament to Jorn's genius. RIP
not technic fans say often that is very difficult to build this sets, but when you get the hang of it, is as easy as the classic system
I still find it hard having to push beams into a couple Technic connectors, like more than 3 is really challenging.
@@TiagoCatarinofair enough, they have a lot of friction, but I don't think most steps in Technic models require more than 3 connectors.
Align the slits in the pins to be horizontal to the beam. Makes it much easier to push together multipin connections.
LEGO Technic is my favourite kind of LEGO, I have many memories as a kid getting the original excavator and motorcycle sets that had the yellow trays to sort the pieces and making a working machine. As an adult I love my super car with a working engine, doors. I loved building the 42100 LEGO Technic Liebherr Excavator and I'm almost finished with the Dune Orni. I am so sad with all the negativity around the Orni set, it's amazing yet so many LEGO purists are dumping on it.
@@brownjames112 I like Technic, because I grew up with Bionicle, which instilled in me the love for the Technic system. I didn't buy the Orni simply because I've never seen nor read Dune.
My most recent Technic set is the Perseverance Rover, because I'm more of a NASA guy than a car guy. I also found s complete Monster Jam Megalodon set at a Thriftstore for really cheap. The only problem with it was the poor condition of the box (which gave me LEGO Racers (2003) flashbacks because of the pullback motor.
This is what technic is meant to be. I also love how open this set is so we can see all the gears moving
Yep, in my youth i also did a lot of Lego Technic assemblies (although I did not have many sets and only assembled them once or so, but all the parts could be used for all manner of complicated mechanical things (like a machine to put glass marbles in a tray automatcially irrespectively of how long time passed between feeding the mechanism the individual marbles).
However in this set, you should probably add a counterweight and truss on the opposite side of the earth-moon truss in order to balance the thing and to keep it small you can use steel nuts or similar in a Lego box instead of just lots of legos...
You're not bothered by how horribly ugly sun & earth are? Or by all the blue pins?
This was on display at my local Lego store and originally I couldn’t care less but when I turned the handle I fell in love with it
Yeah, that's what does it sometimes
@@TiagoCatarino its amazing how easy and smooth the handle turns, doesn't feel like it should turn the whole assembly with the little required effort
This is legit one of the most impressive LEGO sets I've seen in recent years. I'm not a space guy but considering this for just the amazing mechanism. Great review!
I liked this as soon as I saw it, but now when I look at the mechanism and how close it is to being accurate, I think it is amazing. This is exactly what Technic should be. I hope they do more like this.
The thing that impresses me about the accuracy is by using Lego part 32016, the tilt of the earth is 22.5 degrees, which is very close to the actual value of 23.5°. However, since the axial tilt of the earth changes over time, this orrery will become increasingly accurate over the next 10,000 years
I feel like if you've grown up on Bionicles, you'll have 0 issues with technic sets lol. It's just bigger, more mechanical Bionicle building experience and I love that
I honestly have the opposite problem of most Lego fans. I think system is often lacking and that technic brings the functional, innovative aspects of a modern toy into the sets. I miss Bionicle dearly
Honestly I can't understand the appeal of adult brick-built sets, i thought the whole point of Lego as a kid was to build in complexity until the adult stuff was like, the Architecture line. That an adult builder would hate Technic is kinda... self-deprecating, I can't believe someone would admit to that.
I was really hoping, even though it seemed unlikely, that you would review this set! I love this thing! This is the exact type of model that technic is suited for. I don't understand the cars...
Right? More of this please. Do we really need more cars and construction vehicles?
What about the cars you don’t get? Feels like it’s perfect for technic especially if you want to see gear shifts and pistons move no? Don’t know how you can do that with system pieces…
@@Floorslug I like cars. But It feels like they're taking the place of everything.
If you look at the currently 10 biggest technics set that Lego sells as I talk. There are 8 car, 1 crane and 1 helicopter. Even the construction machines are rare now. Technic is all about functionalitys, and the cars are not very playable (what is the point of having an amazing gearbox if you almost don't see it working).
Sets like orrery are pure functional. We need more set like this. I love motorised construction machines and it is a shame that the only one currently is the crane who doesn't even have a gearbox, and the only interest are the pulleys. But this set is way too expensive anyway, and the licence liebherr means nothing because the set is very unrealist.
It's for car people, people with an engineering mind or background, and for people who just like to see how things work. Technic is about THAT, not the finish product looking as accurate as possible. Hence why it's called "TECHNICal". It's not for everyone, but it has a huge following. I personally LOVE a lot of Technic stuff, as well as System builds.
@@TiagoCatarino hard to get buildings onthe Technic lineup since it's all about the mechanisms and a building will hardly have any... But is surprizes like this set that makes it for the line... I'm a HUGE fan of Lego Technic and i hope to see more like this one...
Since Lego didn’t take the effort: Now it’s time for some brilliant guy on Bricklink to design a beautiful retro aesthetic casing for this.
Indeed!
This piece would also be great to create in a sort of steampunk quality.
Why hasn't Lego a Steampunk technic line?
After spinning it around for fun a little bit, I set mine as close as I could to the moon's cycles for this year. I'm having a ball right now with this set looking at how properly everything is lined up at the peak of the new moon for today's solar eclipse! It's so much fun to imagine the eclipse path sweeping across the Earth!
Today I learned the Sun spins
Never too late!
Even cooler space fact: the entire solar system is moving around the center of the milky way at a 60.2 degree angle to the flat plane of the galaxy at approximately 200km/s. So when we make one rotation around the Sun (a year), we’ve actually moved in a corkscrew. (For the Sun to make an entire lap around the Milky Way it would take 230 million years.)
Blasphemy
Yea me neither i guess it makes sense that it would but tbh i never thought about it to much and im guessing a lot of people dont unless they really like space
@@joermnycThanks for all the Space FACTS, it’s a blast for me too. 😉 Now I have to get a rotating house to display my orrery in.
What a unique entry for this year's space... Event? Overtheme? It's the perfect approach to the challenge that takes advantage of the theme perfectly!
Lol, I like that name, Overtheme… when Friends go to space, maybe Duplo can too…
Yet again, thank you for an amazing professional review!
More to come!
Not so many people know this set but the Friends set "beach amusement Park" from summer 2023 is quite impressive with it's visible technic mechanisms that animate three fair stalls at the same Time, which Can be motirized
I would love this in my Lego City! I think this would make an excellent centerpiece of a museum or planetarium.
Maybe you could build a floor directly underneath the sun to hide the mechanisms, and a dark dome with stars over it!
I can't wait to grab this one. I fell in love the moment it was revealed. This is the kind of set Technic excels at - one that proudly displays mechanical systems. This set even goes further and models a physical system that we all experience the movement of every day, and makes us pay attention to things we often take for granted. This set gives the builder a deeper understanding of science and engineering. I seriously doubt lego will produce a more inspired set in the next few years, and I don't say that lightly.
Both numbers for the lunar cycles are correct! It takes about 27 days for the moon to go around the Earth, but it ALSO takes 29 days roughly for the cycle to go from New Moon to New Moon. The reason for this is that in the time it takes to go around the Earth, the Earth has also travelled around the sun, and since the moon phase depends on the position of the moon relative to the Sun…it takes another two days to get back into the New Moon position.
That’s really fascinating
Such a nice set to build and to play with, even as an adult. Such a clever mechanism. This purchase was well spended money.
Thank you for the review Tiago! I’m a huge technic fan so I’m spending my money on this set for sure.
This is the one of only Technic sets I've wanted in a long time
I also like all things Space so I got this set despite not being a fan of Technic (either for build experi or aesthetic). And I LOVE this set. So much that I keep showing it to my colleagues on video calls and making them watch whilst I do a complete cycle of the year!
I feel like I'd like this set more if it had just a bit more going on to make it look more refined. It looks cool, but very raw, if that makes sense. It looks less like a set I'd buy from Lego and more like a fan design. Cool idea, nitpicks aside.
I can imagine someone is thinking “now just let me add the other planets…”
This is such a cool set! Also, technically the 27 days is accurate, since that is the moons sidereal period meaning how long it takes to orbit the earth. The synodic period, which is what i think you were referring to, takes 29.5 days and that is a complete cycle of the moons phases (full to full). Hope that helps!
I love Lego technic but I was on the fence about this one, after watching your review I'm definitely going to buy it, the designers are geniuses! The build looks like so much fun!
I made one out of Lego when I was like 10. I couldn’t control my excitement when I saw the set. I got it the next day.
I just picked this set up yesterday! Haven't had the opportunity to build it yet but I'm excited!
I do not share your dislike for Technic in general, but I absolutely agree that the theme is boring because it's always the same sets. The interest of Technic are the mechanisms, and with cars you always get the same (steering, pistons, gearbox). This kind of set is exactly what Technic should propose.
There are stickers in the set. That's unbelievable
mind blowing for how detailed it is especially the rotations
My only complaint about this set is that it makes the orrery that's been up for consideration in ideas 3 times now less likely to be chosen
I’ve been waiting and hoping you would review this set! Thank you!🙏
Great set, I loved building mine, insane pleasure watching the workings
How did you put on those stockers so perfectly!? Did you use soap, like the LEGO website suggested? Have you used that method before? Is it good!?
I love the Lego Space stuff. I wish I had gotten the ISS, but I wasn't financially stable enough at the time. Now I've got the Lunar Lander, Space Shuttle, and Orrery. Hope more comes soon!
i built this exact lego set with my dad and i loved every bit of it
i found a good technic to bring the stickers on the bricks with 2 fiongers on each side around the sticker, so they are perfectly place. as a guy who has build hundrets of lego technic models, its for sure that you loet a bit space between the gears that it runs smothly, finally i dont have to hold the model on the ground, it runs so smoothly.
indead as a space enthusiast it was one of the best and coolest things over the years to build and play around with
Technic provides a challange the regular System bricks don't provide for me anymore. It's good to challenge yourself every now and again.
This was a day 1 buy for me. Love it.
those Sun pieces will be useful for some bionicle builders... 😏
We are snagging this today and can’t wait to build! 😊
Shoutout to the construction skill of OSRS for introducing me to orreries! When I saw this set in a store I immediately told mum about the awesome orrery set and she didn't know that that was.
Tiago is the master at good eyebrows in youtube thumbnails
🤨 😯 🤨
😕😏
Personally I'd replace the crank handle with a simple power functions motor and maybe widen the base a bit so it's more stable
I hope technic can make more sets with interesting mechanisms like this in the future instead of just cars!
I picked this one up last weekend. I was eyeing it since it was announced and finally got it. I don't know when I will actually build it as my backlog has gotten quite large.
I also really liked the NASA Persevalence set with the Mobile Function making you able to play missions with the rover and Ingunuity. The set says it is for 10y but in my opinion it should be at least 14 with how difficult it was. So I recommend the set if you like the LEGO Orrery even though the Persevalence set is much more complicated and difficult. :)
From simple price/parts measure, this looks ridiculously expensive, but that doesn't take into account the outrageous number of gears this includes. Gears always drive up the price, especially large turntables and the enormous 4-piece ring gear used (although not as a functional gear) as a base. Even if you didn't like the orrery itself (and it's pretty great), this would be a solid parts pack for anyone who wants a broad selection of parts for geared mechanisms of their own.
This is going to be my first lego set. At first, I hesitated. I am a 14 yr teen, and surely, why would I even require this from an educative perspective? Well, actually other than that, I just like the accuracy of the model. Besides, I am buying lego for mechanics and not as from a model standpoint. Models can be built by me, but the complex mechanics and accuracy is possible only with lego. I am happy with my purchase, as a working model and also for its accuracy and visuals
do you guys agree?
One of the coolest sets of all time.
I remember saving my paper round money for the motorised AT-AT one of my favourite technic builds
Huh I didnt even know this set existed, really cool
I swear, when I saw the thumbnail I was like "no way, not even him can dislike this beauty"(probably my favourite Lego set.) I'm happy to announce that I was right 😊
Quite teninc set love the spinning of the sun and earth 🌎 great review and recommended 👍
I think it would amazing if you could put a light inside the sun, then you would see the shadows on the moon and earth in real time. In fact if you could 3d print a clear sun, you probably could do that.
It's so funny to see the earth zoom around so fast.
Great review as ever Tiago. I bought this on release day as I too love space and orrerys. Like you I find technic stressful but had to have it. Did you know it also takes 364 spins of earth to go around the sun, how close is that?! Also the angle of the piece holding the earth is 22.5° which is only 1 degree off the earth’s true axis tilt - its such an accurate orrery that every school should have one and marketed as a “toy” is an injustice. Thanks again Tiago.
But the moon should also be rotating (we always see the same side of the moon)
I have the Cada Orrery already, which just looks a lot better. Though, with how rough I squeezed everything together, it doesn't roatate smoothly
To avoid the balance issue we just adding a motor to our system and automated it
0:21 I found this statement interesting considering that Technic, like all Lego systems, is based on instructions. I understand that the builds can be complex, however in my experience the instructions are usually pretty clear and easy to follow. Of course "hardness" is a debatable topic. The issue I see with criticising the ability to take them apart is that the sets have to be sturdy, they have to hold together under stress after all. I honsesty think that despite flaws, there aren't many other ways the Technic system could be done. Just wanted to state my opinion, as usual this was a quality video 👍
We designed a kit to motorize it. Otherwise, you have to keep shaking the handle manually, and you can’t place it somewhere for dynamic display.
Just curious, does Earth rotate 365 times during one orbit around the Sun?
The only thing that could make this better is a tilted orbit for the Moon. The way the model is configured now makes a total solar eclipse happen once a month, and in reality we don't observe this, precisely because the orbit of the Moon is tilted
We need a death star add on for this. Or a new hope version of this would also be fun. Might also be able to add a counter weight but lego should have added something for that.
I'm on bag 2 and it's great seeing how it is already working across the gears!
Loved the ending. ❤
110 percent agree about the nightmare of those stickers. Those really should have been prints.
Can’t wait to change the gold 2l bushing to some tires. Maybe they will actually roll along those new large rings.
well now I might have to buy it. Look at what you've done.
ah... darn it...

My fingers hate technic by my space loving heart can’t pass this one up
Can't wait for a fan build of the entire solar system as a functional model
That’s insanely cool
I wonder if you can put a motor where the crank is for automated turning
Yes, you can, although you have to make some modifications to allow the motor to attach properly AND you need a couple black friction pins to keep the motor itself from spinning. But I did it and it works well. I used a remote control so I could adjust the speed too.
Now this is a technic set (I’m that guy who said that ornithopter is not technic)
Lego Technic is my favorite theme in general. My least favorite theme sets are the ones based on movies and tv shows.
I dont really buy lego sets for myself. I just get a few big sets a year for my birthday and christmas, but as soon i found out this set existed, i went straight to the store and picked it up
I'd imagine this being motorized could make for a great showpiece (though probably not spinning as fast as you are doing here)
This is a work of art. I absolutely need to get this
"These massive gaps by the connectors points are a bit painful to look at, but I guess they fit the Technic aesthetic" hahaha, one of the best LEGO quotes! 🤣
What a wonderful set! And, as usual, an amazing and complete review, Thank you, Tiago!
As someone who likes calendars relations with astronomy, I definitely will buy this the moment it arrives to my country n_n
Ngl I really want another technic set. I just don't know what one
This is the only one you need... 👀
How about a Death Star in the center with Lukes X wing and and a TIE fighter? 😅 Great review, I saw this one in the store and was surprised the box is so small. I would only argue that if it was just a regular model (not made of Lego) you may have to secure it while you turn the crank as well.
We have attached the handle and the only thing that spins is the top middle peg none of the gears on the side, is this right we have reassembled twice!
Third Xs a charm 😎
“ANCIENT SINS. ANCIENT SINS. ANCIENT SINS”
Star Wars next, please!
As a technic fan hearing your reasons for not liking the theme was totally bizarre.
This was my first technic set and I built it wrong. My stepdad noticed something and I somehow fixed it but then I noticed two more problems that I don’t know how to fix
Me: clicks on video
Tiago: it’s a Lego orrery of the Sun/earth/moon system, and it’s pretty cool
Me: It’s already been boughten
Question: can we make the sun shine?
I wish the orrery was flatter, with the orbital rings layered on top of one another and the bodies elevated on axles. The way the arm sags is really disappointing to look at in my opinion
01:46 am I the only one who wants to remove the moon piece and replace it with a Superman minifigure in order to recreate the “Supes turns back time by flying really fast” scene from the original film? 😂
This is great - just need a light kit to turn it into a little night light too ☀💡
Wow, i want this so bad, great set , great review
A model so simple a Flat Earther can't misunderstand it.
Someone needs to set this up to a clock motor or something
Wishing you peaceful weekend 😊
I wish that myself. But then I remember I have 3 kids 😬
@@TiagoCatarino hahaha, have a great family time 💕
I think the moon stickers are correct if you live in the southern hemisphere, but being from the UK I would have to swap the stickers showing the quarter moon phases (unless I look at it upside down). Am I thinking that right? Cheers
I have this set and I absolutely love it
