Great reaction. Love your genuineness. I've been a U2 fan for 37 years and have seen them 13 time over 6 tours. This is definitely in the top 2 live version of Bullet the Blue Sky that I've seen. Every song U2 does, except for maybe a 3 or 4 are better live than the studio version. They are the most groundbreaking live band in history. Pretty much everything you see at all other artists concerts post-1990 came from U2 doing it first.
Now, to give you some background on this performance. First you have to know that the band are from Ireland and grew up in a divided country and lived through The Troubles, with bombings and shootings and random terror acts. So when he talks about being a boy on the other side of the barricade, that comes from that. Also know that U2 is a highly political band because of their background and speak (and sing) out against mistreatment, inequality, hunger and disease, terrorism, the list goes on.
The song they are playing was written after Bono visited Central America in the mid 80's and saw the devastation and violence there, and how America's involvement in the conflict was counterproductive. The original recording does not use a megaphone and has only a small speaking piece in the middle " A boy comes up me, face red...."
The guitar sound the The Edge is making was his interpretation of a direction he got from Bono, where he told Edge to make the guitar sound like F-15's flying overhead.
So this then ties to Syria, where for the most part the US kept its distance but is supporting the Kurdish led Democratic forces who are fighting against terrorist groups like the Islamic State group, AlQuida and other Iranian back terror groups. So in a way, like the situation decades before in Central America.
Keep exploring U2. There is SO much to see and hear from them. Some of it quite drastically different from album to album. I would check out Love is Blindness or The Fly, or Until The End of The world from ZooTV Sydney, Sunday Bloody Sunday from the Rattle and Hum movie, Kite from Slane Castle 2001, Mofo from Popmart Mexico City, and if you like some piano, check out New Years Day from Slane Castle as well.
    Cheers!

Just to give a little more context on Syria, the war started out as a civil war against an authoritarian king. It started out as two sides, but then the Kurds who were a repressed minority broke off to fight for independence. The US supported the Kurds because they were our ally in the gulf wars in Irag. In the vacuum ISIS started spreading and taking over major portions of the land. So there were basically four sides, almost like Game of Thrones. When it looked like the kingdom was about to fall, Russia sent in military help to flatten entire cities to gain control over them.
There's a part of the TV screen behind the band where they show yellow bodies over a blue background. Those a people from Syria who fled the destruction only to drown trying to get into Europe. The bodies are arranged as yellow stars over a blue background which is the flag of the EU. France and Ireland are both part of the EU.
The part of about "we don't want you in our revolution" wasn't about keeping out aid. It was setting up the counterargument later in the song. It was saying that if we're going to make meaningful change in the world, we need to bring everybody along, not exclude people.
This was my first time watching one of your videos. I'm now a subscriber and looking forward to seeing more.

The larger picture is US intervention overseas, yes. The original 1987 song was about US intervention in Central America in the last stage of the Cold War. Bono's instructions to the Edge were to come up with guitar sounds that evoke atmosphere of war. They are much older now and Bono has received a lot of criticism for his endless hob-nobbing and negotiating with world leaders. His 'conversation' in this song is a very revealing look at criticism he would receive from a younger, idealistic version of himself. But his argument in the end is that all ideas need to be at the table, and ideas need people who can discuss and plan or they won't go anywhere. And that means meeting and getting to know powerful people you might otherwise not like or agree with - so he's the voice of age and experience at the end. But I think the run down the ramp and heavy breathing to close this performance are also his way of saying it's all pretty exhausting.

Going to a U2 concert is an EXPERIENCE. That's the best way to describe it

After his journey through Nicaragua and El Salvador, the singer Bono wrote these lyrics. The US Latin America policy was very controversial at the time; the civilian population in particular suffered from the situation.
Their 30 million selling album Joshua Tree and the following tour album Rattle'n'Hum (songs featuring BBKing and Bob Dylan, tribute to Billie Holiday) show U2's respect and commitment to America.
Your song often went without a break into a musically and lyrically completely different Running To Stand Still, was a musical concert highlight, see Paris 1987, but old video.
In my opinion, U2 were the inventors of the multimedia rock show 1991 ZOO TV, first indoors, then in stadiums. U2 addressed and parodied the influence of television, especially during the Iraq war. In the video Sydney 1993 you will find an ingenious version of the song package mentioned.
Other tips from this: The Fly, song package Even Better Than The Real Thing+Mysterious Ways (fun to take a deep breath), Until The End Of The World or the profound ballad One (also good official video).
If you want to know the high-energy origins of U2 where the music is front and center, Red Rock's Chicago video and the legendary 15' performance at Live Aid 1985 (Sunday Bloody Sunday+Bad).
It's not without reason that U2 will be opening the new, structurally ingenious The Sphere in Las Vegas on September 29th, then mainly dedicated to the album Achtung Baby from the Zoo TV Tour mentioned above, so U2 will again be present in the media, especially in the USA. So with U2 songs you will be right on trend.

The US foreign policy keeps being very controversial... But now is clearer after Commander Laura Richardson spoke about the direct US interest in Central and South America natural resources... This was such an era in U2 music.

I went to U2 concert in 2015 in San Jose (7 months before this show). U2 did something new on this tour, they moved all PA out over the floor of the area. I remember looking at the rigging and seeing the subs and other speakers up there. There was an article in a magazine about it, but forgot which one. The sound was amazing. I read that the rigging (including the big screen) weighed around 100,000 pounds, imagine being on the floor of the arena with that much weight hanging over your head.

    Great review.
A lot to take in with this.
This song is totally different on record to this live performance.
The song was on the Joshua tree 87 it was a song that was inspired by a trip that Bono made to Nicaragua and El Salvador, where he saw firsthand how local peasants were affected by United States military intervention in the region. Angered by what he witnessed, Bono asked the Edge to "put El Salvador through an amplifier."
First half of the song is identical to the original song but the second half is totally different.
Bono is known globally as an activist. He does so much for charity all over the world, a lot around Africa. (red) is Bonos charity. Now because of this Bono is hated and loved for it. He gets a lot of criticism for being a hypocrite etc he has been with a lot of world leaders lobbying to drop third world debt. Bono is probably as famous for his charity work as he is for being in U2
The second half of the song is a conversation between a 19 year old Bono with todays Bono. What would a 19 year old Bono say to himself regards charity work for etc
Probably worth watching the video again with that in mind and also listening to the original just to see the difference.
It’s a highly political song as are alot of U2 songs and it was used with images from Syria for this tour. The song wasn’t about Syria but the original meaning ties in.
If your going down the u2 live rabbit hole see
    Sunday Bloody Sunday red rock

When Bono does the 19 bit: 'na, na, na, na, na, na, nineteen', it's referencing a song called '19' by Paul Hardcastle. about the average age of a Vietnam period US soldier being 19. To anyone who is unfamiliar with it, look it up

Syria civil war started after the government started shooting on manifestations protesting its inaction when crops were failing due to multi years of droughts (caused by climate change). Some groups in the population took arms to fight the regime who was shooting them. It became a civil war. Then some extremist groups got involved (ISIS who were thrown out of Iraq settled in Syria) and fought both sides. Since the regime was not succeeding putting down the uprising, their backer, Russia, got involved and started bombing whole cities. There was pressure for the US to get involved but they didn't directly. So millions of Syrians had to flee their countries, to Jordan and Turkey and they're still there in huge refugee camps. Lots of Syrians tried to flee to Europe by boat, lots of their boat drowned (that the image of the "stars" floating in the ocean along the Ode to Joy which is Europe's anthem). The US only got involved when ISIS came close to put their hands on oil fields in Eastern Syria (close to Iraq), now Marines are protecting the area so oil revenue aren't use to fund extremist groups.

Ok, this is super late, but the 1st song was "October", a song of hope, that will we rise up over our troubles (hence showing Syria). THEN, Bullet shows what's happening in San Salvador in the 80's. Reagan got involved (he's refeered to in the lyrics "as the face aa red as a thornbush", because people were divided. San Salvador did not want us. The boy was real. The conversation between them was real.

You're very wrong on the lyrics. "We don't want you in our revolution" is about people that "hate" Bono for trying to help and "save the world". He even went before congress to talk about the debt relief for Africa. And some people think he's a hypocrite, being rich as he is, trying to help the poor. (which he REALLY did, not by himself off course). Even talking about the gun violence in the USA and against trump. Hence, the "You're Irish".
