I'm an experienced knitter but always found casting onto DPNs frustratingly fiddly. Came to youtube to see if there were a better way - and sure enough there is! Thanks for this tutorial, I'll be using it pretty much immediately to make some baby knits!
This gets rid of a nasty problem I’ve been experiencing every time I knit with DPN’s. I cast on differently but figured quickly if I cast on 15 stitches I can slip the 15th to the next needle and keep going. (14 each). Thanks!!
How cool! I'm fairly new to knitting and I haven't ventured into sock knitting yet. I know I'm gonna have to soon though as my mother in law is giving me a book about knitting socks for Christmas. I'll be sure to come back and consult this video when I start on my first sock. One question. What is the reason for/benefit of using DPN instead of the magic loop when making socks?
I've heard that if you wind the yarn around your needle the number of stitches you need to cast on, and then add a little bit extra to weave in, you'll have the "correct" amount of yarn for your long tail cast on.
OMG.... This technique made me feel so stupid. So stupid for fiddling with my cast-ons while trying to deal with 4 needles... Or moving one casted on needle over to 3 more needles... This is just so painfully simple that I can't believe I didn't figure it out on my own. Yep. Me not so smart. Ha! Edit: To add though... Picking those perfectly done needles up at the end to join? Sigh. At least you aren't cussing to get to this point though. I am still trying to figure out how to easily get the first round done less painfully. I think after that the needles are nicely set in place. Someone needs to create clips to help hold the DPN joints temporarily in place for that first round... Maybe that idea has already been created? If not... It would be blissfully accepted by me lol.
Oh my god, why does every tutorial I come across require a long tail cast on? It's literally the cast on that I dont understand how to do whatsoever. This is my third or fourth video I've attempted to follow and I cant even get passed the cast on without being told to go to another video to figure out how to do it. I'm pretty tired of all the video hopping I have to do to be able to learn something. 🤨🤨
Long-tail cast-on drove me nuts for ages too, as did every vid out there using it. I was able to get it from VeryPinkKnits' vid, after a fair amount of swearing and replaying the same few seconds. If you haven't tried that one, it might be worth a go. *looks at date* NVM, I'm way late to this party.
This is only the cast on. To join in the round on dpn’s you simply start knitting on needle one. I demonstrate this throughly in my video for how to knit socks. I recommend watching that video if you want more instruction :) Good luck. I know you can do this.
Oh my God!! where have you been all my knitting life !!!!!

I wish you would have continued on and showed how you picked all the needles up and knitted the next row. Ohlrich than that awesome idea. Thanks
I show this cast on in action in the My First Socks Video.
Thank you so much for this video. I now can cast-on to DPNs and not lose my mind.
The best video ever, I want to knit the French bag, you solved my problem❤❤
I'm so glad!
I come back to this video everytime I am casting on in the round ❤
Thank you so much. Usually you can find lots of magic circle but this is what I needed. Cheers.
Happy to help!
... I'm floored. This is perfect. Thank you!
God bless you Marly, this tutorial is amazing, thank you 🥰🌼

Thank you, Marly for a great demo. I did the No Cuss Cast off for DKN. on my project, today. It worked great! Thank you so much!
Extra awesome! Off to give your method a shot on some new KnitPro Zing dpns. Thx!!
Marly, Thank you so much for this! I have struggled with this for years. Some were not as well matched as this will be.
Wow. I hate magic loop with a passion. Am definitely going to try this.

This is absolutely genius!

Thank you!
That was amazing thank you!
GENIUS!!!
Excellent!!!
Very cool!
Nice teaching
That doesn’t look so scary. Thanks for the great demo.
I love this! I like the long tail cast on, but how do you know how long to make your tail so that you have enough to cast on all your stitches?
You need to measure a tail that is at least 3x the total circumference of the item you are making.
I always use quite a bit more than I believe I need, then just cut off the excess after I join the round.
Yep. that is what I end up doing as well :)
I've heard that if you wind the yarn around your needle the number of stitches you need to cast on, and then add a little bit extra to weave in, you'll have the "correct" amount of yarn for your long tail cast on.
Obrigada 😘
like butter!
WHAT THE PHOOEY
Haha got u there
Can’t wait to try this…but still cursing from my last try, lol!
I hear you!
Could you show how to join ?
I show how to join in the my first socks videos.
Love the method but it is only good if you can already do the long tail cast on method. As I am a beginner, this was way to fast for me.
This is a cast on for working in the round. Have you tried that yet?
Me too. At least the first few stitches should have been done slowly. I couldn't figure out what she was doing.

Music made me jump wow 😮
I don’t want to say can’t but dpn’s confuse me. I’m willing to make the ultimate sacrifice and purchase a set.
Was was intimidated by them at first but then I tired them and I love them wooden ones are my favorite
By the way you have the same last name as my dad
Lol on this title

Lol, y not do it a little faster for us beginners?
its to fast for me sorry Im a beginer
take your time and watch is over and over ;-) This is a useful cast on but not the only one out there.
Can’t see what u are doing. Need it to be slower
you spent almost 10 minutes showing us that and you don’t show how to join in the round on DPNs? ahhhh
This is only the cast on.
