  • In the 19th century, a new breed of hero appeared. In an explosion of creative energy, a group of remarkable men emerged who were to invent the modern world, tackling the raw forces of nature with courage, brains, and panache. Men of Iron brings the extraordinary achievements of these great Victorian pioneers to life.

    Fascinating documentary. But, what is not mentioned, with the difference between standard and broad guage, is the cost. Broad guage needs far more space in tunnels etc. etc. As a Northumbrian I can only say that what the Stephensons' acheived is evident with all that we have, with the railways today (meant positively). Brunnel was a brilliant engineer but the Stephenson's were the true heroes of the railway beginnings. Evidently, George, the wonderful rustic Northumbrian, took the standard guage size from wheelcart tracks near to the Roman built Hadrian's wall in Northumberland. So, there you have it.

    • @984francis

      I've not heard of the broad guage.

    • @MrConan89
      @MrConan89 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Broad gauge does not necessarily need more space. The space is dictated by the size of the rolling stock that sits above the wheels.

    • @buckledcranium
      @buckledcranium 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Broad Gauge unquestionably was more costly to construct; but the economies of scale were greater in operation. Broad Gauge locomotives were more powerful, and could carry more fuel and water, transport more goods, carry more passengers, at higher speeds, over greater distances, with far superior fuel economy.

    Brunel's broad gauge would have been much more expensive in the long run. It was not excellence but money that decided the issue.

    • @dickJohnsonpeter
      @dickJohnsonpeter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How? You would be laying the same amount of track just spaced wider apart. There would have been less derailments meaning less repairs and new locomotives and cars having to be built.

    I think Brunel was only able to do the things his did because he was NOT the "genius" this program claims he is! I am always morbidly fascinated by documentarians and "experts" who attempt to explain mechanical technology with biography. I find such hagiographies dubious if not outrightly misinformative. In this particular example there is no genuine distinction between the survey methods of Brunel and Stephenson: clearly Brunel did better but we are not informed how exactly he did better. What paperwork did Stephenson produce and how was this lacking when compared to Brunel's paperwork? How can engineers learn if this important detail goes unexamined? I refute the implied claim that Brunel's parliamentary detractors made "schoolboy errors". Instead, what the "expert" says in this instance is a mea culpa! This "expert" is the one using exaggerated, hindsight language to vilify not Brunel's non-engineer examiner! So, what exactly is this "expert" vilifying? I'm not ashamed to admit that I don't understand who or what he is going after. What exact engineering details did Brunel present as his means for overcoming his objectors? What about this engineering detail made it socially relevant to the likes of Parliament? Surely there was more to it than simple education lessons in physics! However, above all I dislike how this program doesn't understand that they are giving the subject of their "adoration" a backhand. The word "genius" is not a compliment. The term speaks to a stylish someone who is, despite themselves, distant, unconcerned, dismissive and often desultory of the socially relevant concerns of the wider public. I myself will use this term to describe the "expert" glassy-eyed presenter wearing the dark and foreboding "Steve Jobs" jumper.
