Friendship With The World Is Enmity With God (James 4:4-5)
“Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God, Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”” (James 4:4-5)
We the Christians do not realize that being in the world does not mean to be conformed and focused on the world.
Today, St. James is warning us to not be familiar and have friendship with the world around us.
Focusing on the world with its wisdom, inspiration and pleasure is an enmity against God.
We must choose to turn our affections away from the world and be toward God, asking the help of the Holy Spirit to love God more.
We must ask ourselves if we are more interested in gaining the world’s approval and attention than pleasing God? If the answer is yes, we must quickly repent and ask God in prayer to help us focus more on Him.
We must resist any advice or role model that we are following other than Jesus.
We must be aware that worldly ideology could lead us astray.
St. John in his first epistle, chapter four, verse five, cautions us about taking in the world’s views explaining, “They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.”
He continues on verse six to say, ”we are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”
It is very dangerous to follow the wisdom of the world because we may unknowingly be following falsehood.
We, the children of God, have the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide us and give us His wisdom and Jesus’ model to follow.
Our goal is to be in the image and likeness of Jesus, not the world.
Jesus loves us and gave us His almighty power to resist the world and be in Him safe and protected.
He warned us that in this world we will face tribulation but assured us that in Him we will overcome the world.
