It was a funny sketch, but Colbert's situation at the beginning of the clip could inspire another one: At 0:45 “Oh, my!”, was Batiste’s response to Colbert’s backhanded complement that “it looks better on you than it would on me”. But the reason Colbert was coming off as a Manhattan Mean Girl and racial stereotyper, was, ironically, because of the corporate mandated fear of “cultural appropriation”. If Colbert had not been trying to survive on the egg-shell strewn floors of CBS studios, he would have been his normal “yes-and” improv self, and could actually be creative and imagine how fun it would be to wear that colorful suit. Colbert even kept with the stereotyping, saying the outfit would look good on Arsenio Hall. So when Arsenio came on, did Colbert now think he could never be caught in a yellow hoodie sweatshirt? I can see Key and Peele doing a sketch, playing on this very type of catch-22 mentality. So, at the absurd logical conclusion, after a series of desperate efforts to avoid cultural appropriation, Colbert would be naked, on his knees and appealing to his lord. Then, in a reveal, next to him, an anachronistic African Slave is doing the exact same thing. He sees Colbert, and asks him accusingly, “What do you think you're doing”?
@@pinkprincess2000 I think Colbert just meant that John has more of an adventuous fashion sense than he does and makes the suit work for him. Colbert is man enough to admit he couldn't pull off the suit.
@@pinkprincess2000 Horseshit. Jon is taller, skinnier and younger, and he has fine chocolate-brown skin that isn't bleached out by a mostly monochrome suit. All that other shit's just in your head.

Anybody remember the very funny *P.K. Winsome* ?! The "entrepreneur" and black Republican P.K. Winsome was a recurring character on the good old *Colbert Report* played by Tim Meadows. He was hilarious!! :-)
Dang girl, if he ever gets divorced and you're able to meet him I'd begin with a very classy first line... something like: "Say, sweet thing, can I buy you a fish sandwich?"
"It turns all your bad feelings into good feelings. It's a Nightmare!" Then he nods like yeah you heard me. My Fav Tim Meadows character Sam. Drummer for Dewey Cox. Btw Tim actually played those drums.

Funny you should ask that. As I watched this, I remembered them on the old show & the relationship seems the same -- more than friends with just a teense of the joking not joking you do with a sibling 😋
Strangely I thought it would make a great dress...I am a 50+year old white lady and don't know where I would wear it!!?? Positive vibes from New Hampshire and remember to be kind to each other and yourself during this pandemic and social crisis
Thank goodness for that southern rule about "one drop of blood" because as I am only 1/32 black that means I still get my pumpkin pie along with my sweet potato pie.
I've been to Frederick Douglass' grave. It's in the same cemetery as Susan B Anthony (they were friends). I grew up in the Baptist Bible Belt where cemeteries are still segregated. It was surprised that Douglass and Anthony were buried in the same one (nowhere close to one another, though).
Jon Batiste will likely know that his musical compatriot, the very great Ornette Coleman, rocked a similar style in artistic suits. Critics used to take the piss, but Ornette didn't care - such confidence. He knew it was nothing unusual in his people's ancestry, and still today, because many African peoples wear artistic designs on their clothes. I've had a number of black friends (men and women) over the years who wore specific colors and clothes that used to make their skin colour literally g.l.o.w - it still never ceases to amaze me. And I've also noticed that during the pandemic, the studio set-up Jon's been using (during Colbert) also helps set his skin tone ablaze. Jon, his love of Life and his music rock as living color - we need much more of it.
I love how straight Tim Meadows played this, Stephen was smiling a bit here and there but Tim was on it all the way. Very funny sketch for them.

He was hilarious in 'No Activity'. Love his work.

I agree!!
I love when a man has nice hands 😍
John Batiste rocking that suit better than anyone else could while playing some Bach: fantastic. Yes indeed!😊🎶✌️
I don't know. That looks less like a statement and more like an anti-paparazzi material.
Beethoven's 'Ave Maria' actually
Fox news warned me about this.
😂
Cue Tucker Carlson confused face in 3...2...1...

Faux News also warned us about all fun, positive things in life are baaaaaaad
@pakde sragen stop hyjacking posts with something not relevant.
😂
That was a classic line "Well not any more" .. love it
What? How young is jon batiste?! Regardless, that suit is amazing
Jon's 34. He was a kid, so might have seen Arsenio. I'm 4 years older and absolutely remember Arsenio.
He was great in SNL in late 1990s.
@pakde sragen why would you send someone to that pile>?
