Launched mine off the beach on multiple occasions and as long as the waves don't break right on you that thing sails right over, and the best part is if you do flip as long as you have your gear secured you just roll it right back over, kinda tough in a boat.😂

    The only reason I have a boat is because my great uncle sold me his fully rigged out 2008 Startcraft 14 footer and trailer for $300. He and my grandpa decided they were getting too old to launch and recover it. I have never regretted dropping a grand on Bigfish 120 for even a second. I started with a $400 Lifetime 10 footer in 2019 just to get my feet wet in and committed to buying a 12 footer in 2020. The only regret I have is not shelling out an extra $800 for a pedal drive model.
    Now that I have the little bass boat i need to work out a way to rig up a cradle for my 10 foot kayak on the side of it. It would be awesome to power around the lake and then anchor up and drop the 'yak to paddle back into the spots that are too shallow for the boat.

    I have a lot of respect for people who are good at fishing from kayaks. I don't have a boat or a kayak but I do a fair amount of river fishing in a borrowed kayak and it can get difficult and frustrating, especially if the water is really moving. You only get one cast at the prime spots. The advantage is that you can go a lot of places a boat simply can't.

    first of all, you can buy a great decent boat for about $5000 kayaks have their place fishing kayaks have a place but they really have no place in big water where there’s big boats at. Unfortunately people like to take these and go on main waters, if I’m cruising through a bayou and I come around the curve and you’re there even if I pull off the throttle I’m gonna swap you, so it’s better to stay on plane when I pass you but even then you’re still gonna get rocked. my boat is only 17 foot long it’s made out of the same stuff that car batteries are made out of which put it in the same category as pulling a golf cart which even a Yaris could do so his only real complaint is he has no place to store it and if that’s the case, work harder get you a bigger home or rent you a place that has more than one parking spot kayaks belong in creeks, small pond and shallow rivers. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should word of advice never go fishing where the fish may possibly be bigger than your boat.

    Based on my experience comparing fishing out of a motorized kayak to a 14 ft aluminum boat, ill take the aluminum boat all day long. Any vehicle can tow a small aluminum boat. plus, it's way more safe. You get room to actually move around a little bit, you aren't getting wet etc. small aluminum boats are also the same price if not cheaper depending on what you're looking at, when you get more bang for buck in a small boat..You can actually have a decent motor (20-30hp), anchor up for bait fishing etc. i could understand using kayaks if it was your only option because of price, but it's not even an argument, these kayaks are stupidily expensive.

If you fish bigger water and go out no matter what the weather is a kayak is not the best option. Ive owned boats and fishing kayaks and have had my fun in both. I fish out of a Lund now and wouldnt trade it for anything. All that matters is your fishing and enjoying your time on the water.

Nobody understands boat launch etiquette nor how to back up a trailer. I now avoid all that with the kayak. To anyone serious about kayak fishing I would highly suggest you go for the pedal drive. I dunno. Having no room for error in standing just doesn't work for me. I like my inflatable boat with wooden floor and trolling motor/outboard. Goes 10mph+ and I can take wakes like nothing. so no issues when a boat goes by fast. I like not having to register because pedal, but if you wanna explore bigger lakes I would suggest getting an inflatable with an outboard.

    As somebody with a 30,000$+ bass boat sitting in my yard yes it’s so much better you can fish more spots farther off and in the wind and everything else, but when it breaks down like mine currently is you better hope you have tons of extra cash to fix it. My lower unit is locked up and it’s about 4 grand for an oem one or 1500 for a knockoff that might not last on a 250 pro xs. So if money is no issue bass boats are amazing but kayaks are super fun too. I’ve caught probably as many out of kayaks as I have in my 3 bass boats over the last 6 or 7 years.

    • @NWTrailSeries
      @NWTrailSeries  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was torn between a native or old town. Question for ya though! To get my kayak on and off my car, I move my kayak with the cart and set the butt of the kayak like ~3ft from the car between my roof racks. Once the butt of the kayak is there, I lift the front end and place it on the side of my car. Walk to the butt of the kayak and pick it up to slide the whole kayak onto the car. (Hopefully you're able to picture this?) The rudder on the old town is folded up onto the top of the kayak, which allows me to pivot the kayak onto my car without damaging anything. I've perfected this method, and getting my kayak off and on the car is super easy by myself. Looking at the rudder on a native, it looks like I couldn't use this method. Is the rudder retractable, or able to hide in some way?

    • @dne3142
      @dne3142 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @NWTrailSeries no so what I do is I also have a car with yakima bare roof roof racks and an easy loader. I also flip my boat over on the ground and load it upside down so the rutter is up. And the top of the kayak faces down towards the roof. The easy loader slides out about 3 feet, so I just pick the nose straight up onto that and slide the butt over as you described as well. But the bottom of my boat faces the sky during this process. Besides that, the process sounds about the same. The only thing I don't like mine is I have the nk180 motor so the mount sticks out the back so when I pick the nose up it stands up on the mount which puts pressure that I don't like on the boat. So I'm probably gonna switch to the motor guide bow mounted motor instead but besides that the method works great!

    I get it. I'm new to fishing and I've been bank fishing for a few weeks now, but I've only gone to this little lake thats 5 minutes from my house. The main reason is because every other fishing spot around me is either private or is mostly used by kayak/boat anglers since that's where all the good fishing's at. I wish I could get a kayak, I've been wanting one for weeks now. I just can't afford one. It's kind of upsetting, but I make do.

    A boat doesn't get you into more than half the lakes around me. A kayak opens up hundreds of lakes that most people don't fish. The only downside, is that with a kayak, you have to deal with boats on the other half. *shrug.

    Some of the best fishing I’ve ever experienced was in a daily rental kayak. Fishing on a boat is great, but a lot of inflatables and kayaks on the market today basically do the same thing with a lot less headache (storage, insurance, the cost of both the boat AND a trailer, etc). Considering getting an inflatable dinghy and putting a trolling motor on it.

    I bought a PDL 120 for fishing here in the PNW. I go into the Pacific, the bays, rivers , and lakes. I can go places boats can’t I’ve added a Newport NK 180 pro motor for trolling the rivers and bays for salmon, rivers for sturgeon, and lakes for Kokanee. I love having multiple forms of propulsion especially when I’m miles offshore. I catch just as many many fish if not more than all the boats around me. There are a lot us using yaks here, and we weave in and out of the combat fisheries turning heads as we net the salmon. Best part is now it’s all paid for. You made the right choice!🎣

      Absolutely cannot wait for adding a motor someday. I feel like everything I go out fishing the day is over before it started. One blink and I look down to see it's about time to head home. Maybe a motor would help, or maybe I just need to go fishing more.
      You went fishing for sturgeon!? That I gotta see!

    I was originally going to buy a kayak but I wound up doing something rather odd instead... bought a steel framed, single man, fishing pontoon, the kind with 2 giant inflatable banana bladders that strap to the frame which breaks down (so the whole thing can go in the trunk of a car of you need) but I didn't like my feet dangling in the water (they're all built that way), so I got creative and strapped the top 1/2 piece of a cartop carrier to the bottom of it which instantly made it into a little sealed hull tiny pontoon type of boat! Put a little 3-speed trolling motor on it, wired up a 12v cigarette lighter outlet, a headlight with a seat mounted switch as well as a switch operated 12v micro electric fuel pump set up as a mini bilge pump just in case I ever take on any water in the thing! Love it! Works great!

    I loved my kayaks, until I got older. I started having back issues and just not being able to get comfortable sitting like that for long periods of time. But it was awesome while it lasted- you can toss it in the back of the truck and go wherever you want on a few minutes notice; you can get back into swamps and puddles no one else can, and there's nothing in this world as relaxing and cool as being on the water's surface at day break, silently gliding along, watching the steam come up off the water and the dragon flies skipping off the surface of the lake. There is very little between you and the water, you're very low to the surface- it feels like being part of it all. Boats are great to- but they're different. You feel less a part of it and more like "Make way, coming through..." and going is such a production- you don't want to do it unless you can stay on the water for a long time. If you live on or near the water and can leave your boat there docked and ready to go- that makes thing much easier. But having to haul it around, store it when not in use, maintain it and a trailer, keep everything licensed and ready for inspection, etc.- it's a pain.

    Ive been looking into kayaks myself, but where i live in the rockies hauling and launching it in some of these creeks can be quite troublesome in terms of access to the creeks.
    Thats not to say there arent boat launches in many places, just not near where i wanna fish lol.
    Ive found my mountian bike to be a semi decent alternative for the most part. I can get to my spots quicker than walking akin to a kayak, and worse case scenario i get to work on my casting skills trying to fish spots i cant get to on foot lol.
    Id love to hit some lakes on a kayak, but rivers and streams are a bit more problematic if i wanna drift for a while. Eventually im gonna have to go back upstream, or somehow arrange rides to and from pull out spots and risk leaving it unattended.
