Thatcher created a Britain that looked great to the outside world, increasing GDP, increasing trade with other nations and becoming closer allies with other nations. However, none of that means shit when you made life worse for millions of Brits by taking away the things they desperately needed and allowing the rich to prosper at an almost unrestricted rate.
Genuine question, not trying to be a jerk, but what was it "the people" needed that was taken away and what does that have to do with the rich prospering?
@@GeorgWilde if you think about restrictions actually help prosperity. Businesses learns to adapt with changes. For example restrictions sabotage or on dangerous materials or tricking investors or certain questionable ethics and practices. Have minimal wage labourers will do the bear minimum efficiently and will use the money for goods. Restrictions actually forces us to innovate and find new solutions which increases efficiency which leads to prosperity.

I'm from an industrial town and this woman starved and beat the people of my town in the 80's. People's fathers and grandfathers were committing suicide since being left feeling completley inadequate to provide for their families anymore, as she took their very livelihood from them offering no alternative. She destroyed all the industries we had here, and the effect of her actions still effect communities like mine today. Now you get tv shows like "Skint!" coming around which focus on painting us as scum. Continuing to proclaim the working class as "The enemy within" as she did. Focusing on the worst of our communities, trying to cause infighting. Yet people wonder why these sort of areas are now riddled with crime and drugs today. It is because of this woman, all the ways the inhabitants of these sort of areas use to make an honest living have been completely decimated. She would defiantly break a few eggs to make her bloody omelet and she had no sympathy for these people. She was evil. Yet when I was at university people from other areas of britain seem to constantly paint her as a saint, putting her in the same standing as Churchill. They have never seen the devastation she inflicted on the working class industrial communities of this country. The class divide also widening hugely under her leadership. If you were in London, you were fine. While outside the south of England- especially Wales, Scotland, and Northern England was cast into the fire. A power mad, money hungry, self serving, homophobic gargoyle is what she was. Even the Queen didn't like her. “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.” - Margaret Atwood.

"It was too expensive to extract dangerous chemicals, it was cheaper to ship them from Australia" That about says it all, doesn't it? Fuck the fact that real humans are putting their lives in danger, we want cheap products no matter the human cost, as long as the monetary cost to me isn't as high
Monetary costs are human costs. If you have less money, you will have to spend more time in work and you will live shorter life, effectively costing you years of life. Do that to millions, add it up and see how many lifetimes that makes. Nobody but humans benefit from wealth and without wealth they indeed live cannot.
@@GeorgWilde you're an ancap, you want to do that to *b*illions, so i don't see why you're making the point like making the working class poorer is a bad thing when to you it's the greatest good there is
@Rayyan Ali As if politicians aren't elected by voters? Union leaders are the most detrimental to workers themselves. The primary objective of union leaders is greed, they want to get as much money as they can out of the wealth creators without adding any intellectual value. Unions have solely led to the collapse of several companies and therefore loss of jobs for workers. Union leader works for greed, thirst and gains without adding any intellectual value to production
People forget that unions historically have served a very important societal function. With their virtual expulsion from british life, we see the consequences of their absence - falling wages, widening inequality, rich inordinately wealthier than they have ever been.
+T800System People forget the state the country when the Unions controlled to the extent that it did. The 70s were bloody awful. There always has to be a balance of interests for a level society, but at the time it was completely necessary to inject Capitalist policies. What has happened since then is a different discussion all together.
englishsteel2347 I look back at history and I don't really see any evidence of unions running the country at any point. In fact the truth is the parallel opposite. Any power they did wield was consistently undermined or crushed by the government of the day. And to try and blame the economic woes of the 70's on union activity is to mistake cause for effect.
T800System the labor party is the unions! and yes economist do directly blame the shithole the UK became in the 70s directly on the unions. in a period when Germany, US and france boomed UK dramatically declined.
aaron221969 Well your ignorance is revealed to anyone reading this when you say the labour party is synonymous with the unions. The Labour party throughout its last two periods of government (Blair in 1997 and Wilson beginning in 64) actually served to undermine and restrict the power of the trade unions. Wilson talked about "restrictive practices" on both sides of industry (owners and unions) and co-drafted the white paper "In Place of Strife" which proposed to quite severely restrict the power of the unions. The Labour party has for virtually all of its history had a strong right wing contingent and that right wing has almost always dominated the powerful positions - so this notion that the Labour party is just a mouthpiece for the trade union movement is just not supported by the facts. And when you say economists blame the economic situation in the 70's, what economists are you talking about? Friedman and the chicago school? Any serious economist would tell you that the economic decline in the UK preceded the strikes - not the other way around. We can have a debate about what caused the economic decline in the first place - poor sustained investment in industry, the oil crisis and yes poor industrial relations are all contributory factors. And yes, the strikes didn't help the situation - but people don't go on strike for no reason. A strike is not decided upon lightly; after all when you go on strike you are asking people to cut off their income. People strike because they have no choice. And to blame the whole financial mess that britain found itself in in the 60's/70's solely on unions is just poor analysis and to me is an indication you haven't really a clue what was going on during that period.
Margaret Thatcher has been named the worst Prime Minister of the last 100 years, closely beating fellow Conservative David Cameron in a new survey of leading historical writers. The Historical Writers’ Association (HWA) asked its members to give their views on the last 19 Prime Ministers, in a survey released to mark Theresa May’s 100th day in office on 22 October. However, Thatcher is not as bad as Winston Churchill. Churchill murdered 6 million Hindu people during World War 2 through a campaign of mass starvation. And the British put the image of Churchill on their 5 pound note.
that's a complete lie and you know it is, Churchill didn't "murder" anybody, the starvation in india was due to policy failure and fear of enemy attack, hence why resources weren't directed to enemy borders, at least try to do some research.
oliver kimber The Labour Party, The Liberal-Democrats, The Tories, they’re all the same in their own way. Which is why we should do away with the Capitalist system completely, and it’s fake Democracy, and fake “Socialist” Parties.
Thatcher’s legacy endures today in the fact that she encouraged the general populace to believe that greed was a good thing. People bought council houses and started treating property as assets rather than homes. Result was rocketing house prices which has had a direct effect on young people to this day. During her reign, people realised that greed was beneficial to them, compassion for others went out the window. We’re all worse off as a result, it’s passed on down the generations and now everyone is just looking to enrich themselves. The class divide is getting wider, billionaires on one side and homeless people on the other. I can actually compare her to Trump in many ways, although at least she had a brain. Pity she didn’t use it in a more caring way.
I agree what you say,now alot of people think greed is ok and look at the crazy housing situation.Sell off council houses and don't build anymore,no logic!
tony oldham you don't just 'give' someone another job if all Britains industries had even tried to stay competitive it might of made a difference instead they ran the countries economy into the dirt. The country was far better when she left that when she began.
the politics are not about empathy or any other feelings matter, they are all about the ideology and principles. her core values just did not include citizen well being at all, she simply put pure capitalist economic interests above everything else.

Workers rights protection is in the hands of private owners. That's Thathcer legacy. She always empowered the establishment & the rich. She was like the old Japanese peasant sandle bearer who became Shogun, his first rule? No one who comes from peasant stock can ever leave their class. Thatcher was a strong leader but a heartless one, she only cared about the smallest percentage of the population and saw the working class as a pre-20th century workforce/cheap labour supply. She was the social climbing daughter of a Green Grocer, but I still admire her as a woman who excelled both in domestic & foreign politics in a male dominated world. She was one of the most iconic and influential figures of the 20th Century. Whether you love or hate her it's undeniable she was a remarkable individual for the context & the times.
What I like about this video is that the people supporting Thatcher and the people protesting Thatcher are both just people. Some colourful characters aside, most of the people here have very good reasons to think what they think. I know some of you will respond to me, saying that one side or the other lacked evidence. But it’s not about how true their arguments are, it’s about how moral their arguments are if they were correct. I think culturally this video shows how divided Britain was before Thatcher and during Thatcher. I don’t see a balanced debate about what her policies actually were anytime soon though. People’s who’s lives were affected during both of the major governments are too passionate about the issue for any middle ground to be found. I think all we can do is be kinder to each other and know that most people want a better Britain. That’s when real change is discovered
The irony of people reflecting on Thatcher’s “greed and selfishness” when it was the unions own greed and selfishness that got her elected in the first place!

I'm sanguine with your opinion that she saved the UK, that is a valid subjective statement. But she played next to no part in ending the Cold War. That sounds like a double confusion of elevation of UK's standing in the world at the time and false attribution towards Thatcher merely because she was PM at the time. The UK's contribution towards the ending of the Cold War was amongst the smallest of all the European nations. Many events played a part in the eventuality, and no single person was instrumental. However, if I was forced to pick one person I would choose Lech Walesa.
How come Clement Atlee didn't receive a state funeral? I find that odd considering what he achieved. I'll respect Mrs Thatcher as a mother and a daughter. But I'll never respect her as a human being. Daisy Taylor Jones Yes, but Daisy she went far too far & she also ruined the jobs of the affluent people, who worked in the white-collar jobs in the factories, mines & shipyards, like Scientists, geologists, engineers & accountants. Those industries, were the life-blood of those towns, like Swan Hunter shipbuilders were. Or Rotherham & Sheffield Steel-works? Both of my parents were Yuppies, earning good numbers in the 80s, but anyone who didn’t work in the service industries, was treated like plebs, by her. Of course Surrey is rich & affluent & ive been there several times in my youth, in the home of my mums yuppie friend. Labour were left-wing drongos & the Tories under her, were insane. Even Micheal Hessletine had reservations about her privatisation policies & selling off & scrapping technologies developed by Britain.
+Javier Ruiz practically nothing - lefties always talk about how awful she was even though communists have killed millions and she improved Britain more than most!
+Javier Ruiz Because many thriving industrial communities were completely destroyed by her policies, especially in Northern England, South Wales and Scotland. Unemployment reached a record high of 3 million, and towns still bear scares to this day in the from of poverty, generational unemployment and drug abuse. You don't have to be ‘communist’, or even disagree with her to sympathise with the millions who had their livelihoods ruined. She also promoted an ideology of greed; as was said about her “she knew the price of everything and the value of nothing.” Some people also question the validity of many of her economic policies, especially since the financial crash of 2008. +joe stevens Communists certainly have, none more so than the Khmer Rouge, a group responsible for wiping out one quarter of the Cambodian population in the 4 years they were in power; for whom Margaret financed and armed during the 80s when they were fighting to regain power.

I think the era in which she presided may give alot of people a longing for a more "secure" time. I don't want to sugarcoat it,as people/countries have had their troubles then as now,but 1979-1990 was more prosperous and more safe imo. She made sure of safe borders and for all the riots at the over immigration, race and the working class it's nothing compared to the crap Starmer has said this weekend. The Tories AND Labour are both to blame.
well maybe if you grew up a little and understood most of these probably went the extra length of booking a day off to attend this, because thats how much the bitch effected their lives.

She did new thing right, and that was the Falklands. I get that the deficit was massive a needed tackling, but you find another way to fix it that isn't putting thousands of people out of work, destroying the industrial North in favour of the economic South. If she really wanted to import due to costs, then I don't actually have a problem with that. But you take the money you save and invest it in creating new industry and new jobs NATIONWIDE, not just the South. Instead they pocketed the extra money and gave the country over to the rich
No No No. I disliked Thatcherism but thought she knew the game and in hindsight 10 x better than Blair and Boris and would go back to the 80s tomorrow..

You cannot have prosperity with restrictions. Prosperity blossoms only where restrictions are not.

No. Because unions are governments by politically elected union leaders who profit off of workers and entrepreneurs. Making things worse for everyone

@@MAC-vi7fy How about you stop listening to crackpot conservatives and look around you. The working man is being abused. Unions are needed.

People forget that unions historically have served a very important societal function. With their virtual expulsion from british life, we see the consequences of their absence - falling wages, widening inequality, rich inordinately wealthier than they have ever been.
T800System how so?
Margaret Thatcher has been named the worst Prime Minister
of the last 100 years, closely beating fellow Conservative
David Cameron in a new survey of leading historical writers.
The Historical Writers’ Association (HWA) asked its members
to give their views on the last 19 Prime Ministers, in a
survey released to mark Theresa May’s 100th day in office

She also promoted an ideology of greed; as was said about her “she knew the price of everything and the value of nothing.” Some people also question the validity of many of her economic policies, especially since the financial crash of 2008.

Communists certainly have, none more so than the Khmer Rouge, a group responsible for wiping out one quarter of the Cambodian population in the 4 years they were in power; for whom Margaret financed and armed during the 80s when they were fighting to regain power.
She supported Apartheid.
She supported Pinochet's dictature.
She covered and knighted her pedophile friends.
She had nothing but disdain towards the lower classes.
She mercilessly destroyed Scotland's economy.
She destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives.
Psychopathic bitch.
joe stevens thatcher supported and aided the khmer rouge regime in cambodia. The regime was a genocidal communist regime that killed a wuarter of the cambodian population.
The shortest ever documentary!
Margaret Thatcher's political career has been one of the remarkable of the modern times.
Same with Abraham Lincoln. It doesn't make them bad.
Perhaps these people would stop complaining about being poor if they went to work instead of attending the funerals of those they hate.
well maybe if you grew up a little and understood most of these probably went the extra length of booking a day off to attend this, because thats how much the bitch effected their lives.
It would make absolutely no difference to their lives because she's not Prime Minister anymore. Still, I'm all for a national holiday for Thatcher.
Sam Matthews surely your not that idiotic... her policies still effect ppl to this day... leave the politics to grown ups pal.
The people moaning about Thatcher did work for a living until she took it away. Just because people don't look like an oily aristocrat or stock broker doesn't mean they don't work.
kid never grew up in the 80s. i did. thatcher ruined peoples lives with her selfish policy's. last good prime minster this countrys had is Callahan and wilson(both 1000s times better then thatcher)
Britain in 2013 looked like Britain in 1970's.
And yet they complain about Thatcher?
Tony Blair was worse than Maggie thatcher
Tony Blair was a war criminal
That’s a tough one, Blair was a legacy of Thatcher, even Thatcher herself stated so.
*one thing
England and the US were both in economic recession in the 1970s and both saw growth in the 80s
at the expense of doubled unemploymet
They became richer yes. However people are mad about the way they became richer. On the backs of the poor which didnt get much in return.
No No No. I disliked Thatcherism but thought she knew the game and in hindsight 10 x better than Blair and Boris and would go back to the 80s tomorrow..
she made my Dad much Richer I say that
Cole rich?
She was truely the QUEENS PIT-BULL
Fair and balanced documentary. Refreshing. Well done guys!
notice how no one actually says anything, they say they dont agree with what she did, but what did she do? they dont tell you

Global inequality is shite. It's about having sufficient, not about financial levelling.
If the population of the UK were asked who is the most hated man in history ? My guess is that there would be a few suggestions. Certainly Hitler, Bin Laden, Stalin, Napoleon maybe.
However if the question was who is the most hated woman in history ? There would be 1 runaway cadidate. So can we just put this to bed now please. Whether she did any single positive thing or not there is one thing which cannot be disputed. She is the most hated woman in history and amongst others, that is her legacy. Surely more than anything, that tells people who were not alive when she was PM the unrepairable damage that she did to the UK !
Neutral Observer. "Surely more than anything, that tells people who were not alive when she was PM the unrepairable damage that she did to the UK " - Or they're just parroting back the bollocks mummy and daddy told them. False consciousness FTW!
***** I lived through the hell of Thatcher's tenure. She's hated like no other. Nothing false about that son.
Neutral Observer. Hated, yet elected three times. Something doesn't quite add up there, "son".
***** Very simple Guncriminal. The % of the UK population that voted for Thatcher were 33% in 1979, 30% in 1983 and 31% in 1987. That means that 67%, 70% and 69% didn't want her. It's not rocket science Guncriminal. Please try and keep up son !!
Neutral Observer. Your argument is a non-sequitur and you could use it to delegitimise any government. The percentage of the UK that voted for Labour in 1997, for instance, was only 23%. It was still a landslide victory, though.
Please try to get over yourself.
Genuine question - Wasn't Thatcher the first PM in a long time who actually got Britain out of debt and not running such a high deficit as we see today? Something that recent successive governments, namely 'Tony Blair's New Labour' has destroyed?
i did not learn gardening , self sufficiency at school during her rule, instead dependency on corporate chemicalised foods ( I do not think I ate much organic food during my childhood), fluoridated toxic dental water for drinking and bathing, mercury fillings and non bio degradable plastics even today still being used in place of more eco friendly alternatives. Ocean life is now dying around the globe due to pollution, we are all literally screwed this century. except the trillionares who have protection from eco system collapse, hence they don't care about 'our' world.
rainbowsalads Mercury is a liquid metal at room temperature. They don't make fillings out of it. If you mean amalgam, which does contain mercury, then that's rather different. Just like salt is very different from it's component elements.
What did the Irish make except misery, linen and hereditary alcoholism?
Chris Mullan Well, let me say one thing: at least half the twats who despised Mrs Thatcher would be papists who'd be holding flags out if their old pope came to town. You could go out and put a wager on that now!
+weskitten is cuma lion sa diabhal.
Chris Mullan Come again in the English language.
+weskitten Last reply to you. Thank god i dont hate any one. I have been in London most of my life, i dont care about the race of any one. I have many wonderful English friends and they like me just as the person i am. Its so easy to write on TH-cam any old thing. You only have to look at isis to see where hate goes. I am sure if i met you we could talk about all kinds of stuff. My late dad always said to me to be kind to everyone, and everyone has a story. I wish you no bad feeling, this is me not the You Tube me. I was at a hospice on sunday to see a dear friend who is coming to the end of his life and still shows such spirit and concern for others. I dont know any thing about you, but i am sure your not a bad person, but dont let hate of others creep into your life. You feel better when you reach out to others. Kind regards.
Chris Mullan Well, that's a warm message. All the best to you, too. I guess there is nothing like an encounter with palliative care to focus the important things and remind us of the ephemeral nature of things. Strangely, on Sunday I bought a 2nd hand copy of Amongst Women, a novel about a bitter Irishman and his family, 1990. I can't wait to read it. I like novels with some British dialect, like Barry Hines etc. Cheers.
She supported apartheid In south africa for one.
Preaching to the converted:
Don't like ( minorities / unionists / socialists / intellectuals / poor )
Like ( military / patriots / anti-communists / believers in law and order / capitalists )
Wouldn't expect an art school student or social worker to like her. Or a soldier or someone successful to hate her.
+Lacy McDuffie It was because she was horribly immoral that people hated her so much. The ones who loved her were the greedy. At the time, I was completely bewildered by her winning election after election. (Very few folk liked her) Since then, have come to realise, that it was probably down to backing from Murdoch, - the Sun was a popular paper. I expect he gave her money too, (or her party). At that time, I think funding would have been illegal, (not sure about that), undoubtedly though, Murdoch has had a hugely detrimental effect on politics worldwide. I find myself wondering, how things would've turned out, if he hadn't existed? (or anyone like him). I suppose someone else would have set up whatever corruption they could find. It's a great shame that he could get away with things, he should have been chucked in jail and left.
+Lucia Tilyard You're correct and he's still at the controls protecting the Tory Establishment. I think the people are to blame for this evil gaining power and going unchallenged. Things may change come 2020 or the next financial collapse? All these Tory/Thatcher supporters seem to be either psychopathic or really DiM.
4.14 BS mate. It cost them more to import bad coal from Poland that wouldn't burn. They spent tens of millions modifying the furnaces. BS.
