I lived under Margaret Thatcher's "Rule" and I'll tell you why she was "Hated" She was the most amazing ambassador for Britain overseas but back home she didn't give a damn about her own people. I remember very well Mass Unemployment, Strikes, Rising Prices, Public Services at breaking point, closing down industries that whole town's relied on for employment, telling people to "Get on their bikes" and go to find work, only to find there wasn't any , young people with no hope for a decent future and with no hope you slowly die. She was an evil, wicked woman with a mind like a brilliant machine but didn't have the milk of human kindness to oil it. That's why she was hated by so many.

Thatcher created a Britain that looked great to the outside world, increasing GDP, increasing trade with other nations and becoming closer allies with other nations. However, none of that means shit when you made life worse for millions of Brits by taking away the things they desperately needed and allowing the rich to prosper at an almost unrestricted rate.

I'm from an industrial town and this woman starved and beat the people of my town in the 80's. People's fathers and grandfathers were committing suicide since being left feeling completley inadequate to provide for their families anymore, as she took their very livelihood from them offering no alternative. She destroyed all the industries we had here, and the effect of her actions still effect communities like mine today. Now you get tv shows like "Skint!" coming around which focus on painting us as scum. Continuing to proclaim the working class as "The enemy within" as she did. Focusing on the worst of our communities, trying to cause infighting. Yet people wonder why these sort of areas are now riddled with crime and drugs today. It is because of this woman, all the ways the inhabitants of these sort of areas use to make an honest living have been completely decimated. She would defiantly break a few eggs to make her bloody omelet and she had no sympathy for these people. She was evil. Yet when I was at university people from other areas of britain seem to constantly paint her as a saint, putting her in the same standing as Churchill. They have never seen the devastation she inflicted on the working class industrial communities of this country. The class divide also widening hugely under her leadership. If you were in London, you were fine. While outside the south of England- especially Wales, Scotland, and Northern England was cast into the fire. A power mad, money hungry, self serving, homophobic gargoyle is what she was. Even the Queen didn't like her.

englishsteel2347 I look back at history and I don't really see any evidence of unions running the country at any point. In fact the truth is the parallel opposite. Any power they did wield was consistently undermined or crushed by the government of the day. And to try and blame the economic woes of the 70's on union activity is to mistake cause for effect.

    • @aaron221969
      @aaron221969 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

T800System the labor party is the unions! and yes economist do directly blame the shithole the UK became in the 70s directly on the unions. in a period when Germany, US and france boomed UK dramatically declined.

    • @T800System
      @T800System 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

aaron221969 Well your ignorance is revealed to anyone reading this when you say the labour party is synonymous with the unions. The Labour party throughout its last two periods of government (Blair in 1997 and Wilson beginning in 64) actually served to undermine and restrict the power of the trade unions. Wilson talked about "restrictive practices" on both sides of industry (owners and unions) and co-drafted the white paper "In Place of Strife" which proposed to quite severely restrict the power of the unions. The Labour party has for virtually all of its history had a strong right wing contingent and that right wing has almost always dominated the powerful positions - so this notion that the Labour party is just a mouthpiece for the trade union movement is just not supported by the facts.
And when you say economists blame the economic situation in the 70's, what economists are you talking about? Friedman and the chicago school? Any serious economist would tell you that the economic decline in the UK preceded the strikes - not the other way around. We can have a debate about what caused the economic decline in the first place - poor sustained investment in industry, the oil crisis and yes poor industrial relations are all contributory factors. And yes, the strikes didn't help the situation - but people don't go on strike for no reason. A strike is not decided upon lightly; after all when you go on strike you are asking people to cut off their income. People strike because they have no choice. And to blame the whole financial mess that britain found itself in in the 60's/70's solely on unions is just poor analysis and to me is an indication you haven't really a clue what was going on during that period.

Margaret Thatcher has been named the worst Prime Minister
of the last 100 years, closely beating fellow Conservative
David Cameron in a new survey of leading historical writers.
The Historical Writers’ Association (HWA) asked its members
to give their views on the last 19 Prime Ministers, in a
survey released to mark Theresa May’s 100th day in office
    on 22 October.
However, Thatcher is not as bad as Winston Churchill.
Churchill murdered 6 million Hindu people during

Thatcher’s legacy endures today in the fact that she encouraged the general populace to believe that greed was a good thing. People bought council houses and started treating property as assets rather than homes. Result was rocketing house prices which has had a direct effect on young people to this day. During her reign, people realised that greed was beneficial to them, compassion for others went out the window. We’re all worse off as a result, it’s passed on down the generations and now everyone is just looking to enrich themselves. The class divide is getting wider, billionaires on one side and homeless people on the other. I can actually compare her to Trump in many ways, although at least she had a brain. Pity she didn’t use it in a more caring way.

What I like about this video is that the people supporting Thatcher and the people protesting Thatcher are both just people. Some colourful characters aside, most of the people here have very good reasons to think what they think. I know some of you will respond to me, saying that one side or the other lacked evidence. But it’s not about how true their arguments are, it’s about how moral their arguments are if they were correct. I think culturally this video shows how divided Britain was before Thatcher and during Thatcher. I don’t see a balanced debate about what her policies actually were anytime soon though. People’s who’s lives were affected during both of the major governments are too passionate about the issue for any middle ground to be found. I think all we can do is be kinder to each other and know that most people want a better Britain. That’s when real change is discovered

Workers rights protection is in the hands of private owners. That's Thathcer legacy. She always empowered the establishment & the rich. She was like the old Japanese peasant sandle bearer who became Shogun, his first rule? No one who comes from peasant stock can ever leave their class. Thatcher was a strong leader but a heartless one, she only cared about the smallest percentage of the population and saw the working class as a pre-20th century workforce/cheap labour supply. She was the social climbing daughter of a Green Grocer, but I still admire her as a woman who excelled both in domestic & foreign politics in a male dominated world. She was one of the most iconic and influential figures of the 20th Century. Whether you love or hate her it's undeniable she was a remarkable individual for the context & the times.

That sounds like a double confusion of elevation of UK's standing in the world at the time and false attribution towards Thatcher merely because she was PM at the time. The UK's contribution towards the ending of the Cold War was amongst the smallest of all the European nations. Many events played a part in the eventuality, and no single person was instrumental. However, if I was forced to pick one person I would choose Lech Walesa.

Personally, as an American, I know that Margaret Thatcher was the WORST Prime Minister that the U.K. ever had in the same way that Ronald Reagan was the MOST PATHETIC and THE WORST U.S. President that America ever had as well! I HATED them for having ruined the way the state of things had happened in both countries like the way Hitler and Mussolini did in the 1930's and up to World War II for their countries, too!

    • @robertpolanco1973

Because many thriving industrial communities were completely destroyed by her policies, especially in Northern England, South Wales and Scotland. Unemployment reached a record high of 3 million, and towns still bear scares to this day in the from of poverty, generational unemployment and drug abuse. You don't have to be ‘communist’, or even disagree with her to sympathise with the millions who had their livelihoods ruined. She also promoted an ideology of greed; as was said about her “she knew the price of everything and the value of nothing.” Some people also question the validity of many of her economic policies, especially since the financial crash of 2008.
      +joe stevens
Communists certainly have, none more so than the Khmer Rouge, a group responsible for wiping out one quarter of the Cambodian population in the 4 years they were in power; for whom Margaret financed and armed during the 80s when they were fighting to regain power.

      She supported Pinochet's dictature.
She covered and knighted her pedophile friends.
She had nothing but disdain towards the lower classes.
      She mercilessly destroyed Scotland's economy.
She destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Celebrating a person's death seems extremely tasteless and wrong, regardless of the circumstances. I understand hating someone, but actively marking down a date to parade around singing songs about how happy you are that someone is dead in huge crowds. It just sounds so fucking awful, no matter who it is.

Daisy Taylor Jones Yes, but Daisy she went far too far & she also ruined the jobs of the affluent people, who worked in the white-collar jobs in the factories, mines & shipyards, like Scientists, geologists, engineers & accountants. Those industries, were the life-blood of those towns, like Swan Hunter shipbuilders were. Or Rotherham & Sheffield Steel-works?
Both of my parents were Yuppies, earning good numbers in the 80s, but anyone who didn’t work in the service industries, was treated like plebs, by her.
Of course Surrey is rich & affluent & ive been there several times in my youth, in the home of my mums yuppie friend.
Labour were left-wing drongos & the Tories under her, were insane. Even Micheal Hessletine had reservations about her privatisation policies & selling off & scrapping technologies developed by Britain.

Look at the real heroes like Clement Attlee and Aneurin Bevan before these great men become in the forefront of British politics we the ordinary Working Classes couldn't afford a doctor and our living conditions in the 1930's and 1940's were absolutely atrocious living conditions and you even shared a toilet with a row of houses and you lived in abject poverty , lived on the worst diet you can imagine .
What Attlee did was extraordinary he gave us real homes for the first time also holiday pay , sickness benefits when you pull a sickie , unemployment benefit , family allowance , workers rights and Bevan also came up with for the first time ever good healthcare everyone yet they did not receive a state send off yet a women who made the lives of millions i this country worst was it makes you sick .
Now we have gone back to the 1930's where families are actually starving and have to go out to get food parcels and people are living in Land lord houses that are shit houses basically with repairs not being carried out , also with sometimes no electricity or the heating has packed in and the houses are extremely damp and on top of that they get sanctioned in the benefit agency and while if your lucky enough to have a job you work for pennies you see the Rich Tories want you poor , too now your place and keep you a slave , we need more Working Class heroes now , not Far right wing haters blaming immigration for the Tories failings .
