Oscar pits first, Lando pits and the battle was on. Lando would probably have found a way past. If Max crashed with Lewis and was out of the race, I would have let Lando win.
Wasnt Lando increasing the gap to Oscar lap by lap? Look at the timing screen and you will see the gap gp from 2.9 to 5 plus seconds. Means he was faster on old tires. What a strange decision by the team.
Lando was pushing hard to create a gap, meanwhile Oscar was managing the tires to last till the end, both had to manage but Lando decided to show why they shouldn't revert positions.
@@BenChod416 bro he only backed off on the 68th lap. He wasn't pushing too hard also. How is it that Lando on old tyres could create a 6s gap without any tyre issues. He wasn't slipping around, no overheating, nothing. It was very comfortable with the pace and the tyre management. If you hear the radio from lap 5 lando was told to slow down in almost every corner on each lap which lowered his pace. The pitwall also has engine control to reduce car performance FYI. Later on he closed a 5s gap to 1.5s with oscar which is why they called him to box so he would never have the chance to fight oscar on track. They were very clear that Lando couldn't race against oscar, only oscar could race against lando. On lap 45 they point blank told Lando to not fight oscar and their focus was lewis and max. Oscar was just doing his normal mediocre tyre management while Lando was forced to hold back his pace for most part of the race. Finally due to the undercut he got the lead and as per instructions from morning he got the lead by not "racing" oscar so he unleashed his full pace to make a 6s gap thinking at least he could win now. But the team still insisted on the swap even after the huge gap 😂 Also, one of the mechanics tweeted that it was already a pre planned win for oscar

Looks like even Lando didn't know he was to swap when they called him to box. They called him in saying undercutting lewis. There was no mention of oscar or position swap until they realised after pitting oscar he wouldn't come ahead of Lando. That's when the blackmail started, when he was already 3.5s ahead.
If they continue as is, and Norris wins every race and it is going to come down to 7 points or less not winning the championship over Max, then I hope they remember: they did it to themselves. Sometimes you gain a positon during the pitstops, outlap, inlap, blabla, doesn't matter...they did not give the position to Norris as a present, it was gaind by a bit better strategy calls, that's how it works sometimes. Now they gave the "win" to Oscar and who knows, maybe took the championship from Norris at the end. I believe McLaren doesn’t want their drivers to race each other wheel to wheel especially for when its 1 and 2 points. This strategy was to keep them at a safe distance from each other. Without telling their drivers that they are really not allowed to be competitive with each other. If Lando gave the position earlier and started to put pressure on Oscar then the engineers would have been telling both drivers to save tires to keep them from racing each other
I would justify the switch if oscar could close up the gap. With this much pace difference on the final stint, Lando genuinely could bag the win even if he was pitted later.
The final 15-20 laps of this race was an embarrassment to the sport. Lando pulling away from his teammate gets guilt tripped into letting someone else win the race.
Its pretty std for the leading car to have pit priority each car should have its own pit bay and crew so drivers can go at it. Team orders should not be allowed in any sport you can bet on.
Yeah, McLaren dropped the ball - but if Lando had have complied when he was first asked to swap positions, he would have had plenty of laps to attack Piastri and retake the position.
Agree completely, he should have given the lead to his team mate right away and then battled back to the lead. But no denying the team messed up big time.
Will you honestly do that if put in his position? He has been trying so hard the past races to win a race and always falling just a tad bit short. Then all of a sudden he is put in this position. Sure the team say there will be plenty other opportunities, but not a lot of times are like this one, where Max is having a really bad race and Lando has the best chance to capitalize.
There's literally no reason to do that if Lando's already up in the race. Idk why you would ask a driver to slow down for someone else unless if there was going to be a penalty involved.

Lando is the #1 driver and should be respected as such! Has been with the team since it was in shambles. Years of development and watching others win for your not to respect your decision as a driver and professional. Instead placing a rookie which lost his pace clearly in the second half of the race. For me this a a team breaker I’ll be furious
I feel McLaren owed this win to Piastri as every time he's had a chance to win they've thrown him under the bus strategy wise to help Lando, more than once. Upon witnessing the tantrum Lando threw & retired the car after the collision with Max in Austria I lost all respect for him, as that car was still driveable, & he could have still bagged a few points after a box for new tyres. In so many years of following F1, Indycar & Supercars I've NEVER witnessed a driver retire a driveable car in the way he did, disgraceful.....
I’m not sure the point of “do it for the team” when it would be a McLaren 1-2 anyhow.. point is that it’s clear as day now they do not see Lando as the future favoring Oscar today. His claim to being entitled to being given the win because he was ‘faster’ is BS given he trailed Oscar for 46 laps and got nowhere near enough to even enable DRS, let alone overtake. Think the James Franco's "First time?" meme.
“Just remember every single Sunday morning meeting we’ve had” “I know you’ll do the right thing”
Honesty who wouldn’t be furious. Team orders ok ya one thing but what are we playing at telling me these types of things as I’m actively in a race. Last thing I’d want is psychological chess while managing an F1 race.
It would be funny if lando loses WDC by less than 7 points
Exactly!
Let see if he really can get that close…
I would be laughing at Lando if that happens 🤣🤣🤣
Lando should have given up P1 much much earlier, so that he would have enough time and rubber to race Oscar and take that P1 back by racing.
The way to win a drivers championship is to gather as much championship points as possible for one driver in the team, the end of the season will dictate such team tactics...
Have you got Oscar's ones as well? Would love to know the discussion pre-pitstops
When Oscar was out front before the pit stops they told Lando his race wasn’t with Oscar. He was racing max and Lewis. Then they pitted lando first to cover Lewis to try and keep the one two. They kept telling Oscar don’t worry about lando because their plan was to switch them back. But lando took off lol.
@@lordofvenom4482 yeah I watched it live but on the broadcast you don't get to hear everything. Was want to hear how the plan was put to Oscar and what he was saying after his stop.
The team also updated Lando to say he could fight the Papaya car when he was getting closer before the stops. He could have fought the right way and gave up the place and had 20ish laps to prove he should be winning but team made the decision it was Oscar's day but didn't communicate that at all well. Which again is why I'd love hear Oscar's side too.
@@Tilbo_ someone will post something soon I’m sure. Entertaining race that’s for sure
@@Tilbo_ no he was told to NOT fight oscar on lap 45. He was told point blank not to fight oscar.
@@neetsk12 there was a message later where he was told he could fight the Papaya car. Or did I dream that??
But the team still insisted on the swap even after the huge gap 😂
Also, one of the mechanics tweeted that it was already a pre planned win for oscar
@@neetsk12exactly
@@neetsk12i wonder if that mechanic kept his job after that. It’s a good thing he did, but not sure how the management views these things.
@@marcusaureliusthecat he deleted it and then came out with a statement that he didn't watch the race when he was literally in the paddock. No idea if he's still there or not. Didn't follow up on him, good question.
Why wouldn't Maclaren want Lando to take the win and gain the points? He's the closest to Max!! It makes no sense unless it's a forecast for the constructors championship
Will make a great episode on drive to survive!!
Even Oscar didn't expect this.
Oscar can't hear Lando's radio. Team only told Oscar not to worry when Lando got first pit-stop.
Looks like even Lando didn't know he was to swap when they called him to box. They called him in saying undercutting lewis. There was no mention of oscar or position swap until they realised after pitting oscar he wouldn't come ahead of Lando. That's when the blackmail started, when he was already 3.5s ahead.
what disappointed me was how comprehensively he outpaced oscar at that end despite him driving a better race
Yes, he will then remember the "you do not win a championship by yourself, you need oscar, you need the team".....uh huh, in this case....the team may have very well taken the championship from him...
Distracting the driver because of the horrible strat call is actually insane. That lvl of chatter behind the wheel of a race car is just disgusting. Very unsafe
Would like to see a tyre comparison between the two after the race
I want to draw your attention to what Will Joseph mentions at 2:40
Lando's reaction to his first win is way better than Oscar's reaction. You can see and hear the difference.
What are you saying?
@@Joe_c21 Landos first win, he was overjoyed and you can hear it. You could see the excitement from all the hard work. Very stark contrast to Oscars win.
@@beastvali9208 agree with you 100% the reactions are very different. However, are you saying Oscar didn’t put in the hard work and is not deserving? I believe the team’s decisions created this mess and why Oscar’s response was so subdued. Bitter sweet..

@@asdkksteam2957 I don't have Netflix, buddy. I've been watching motorsports for 30+ years. Nice try though.
Honestly, it was disgusting how they treated Lando he clearly was the faster driver and he is in contention for the world championship why oh why
I believe McLaren doesn’t want their drivers to race each other wheel to wheel especially for when its 1 and 2 points. This strategy was to keep them at a safe distance from each other. Without telling their drivers that they are really not allowed to be competitive with each other. If Lando gave the position earlier and started to put pressure on Oscar then the engineers would have been telling both drivers to save tires to keep them from racing each other
It’s simple we all watched it Norris won on pure pace!!! Embarrassing for mclaren who made f1 look a circus again
I would justify the switch if oscar could close up the gap. With this much pace difference on the final stint, Lando genuinely could bag the win even if he was pitted later.
In an alternate universe Lando doesn't care about team orders, replaces Perez at the Red Bull after Spa beats Verstappen for the WDC
The final 15-20 laps of this race was an embarrassment to the sport. Lando pulling away from his teammate gets guilt tripped into letting someone else win the race.
"The team" got it wrong again. They should have pitted Piastri first.
Its pretty std for the leading car to have pit priority each car should have its own pit bay and crew so drivers can go at it. Team orders should not be allowed in any sport you can bet on.
okay mr engineer, guess you know everything :D
@@asdkksteam2957 I think Lando would have won fair and square if they did.
Цілком слушно. Але вкотре емоції беруть гору над розумом у Ландо. Я це називаю "відключити мозок"
There's literally no reason to do that if Lando's already up in the race. Idk why you would ask a driver to slow down for someone else unless if there was going to be a penalty involved.
@@Sam-Icy Well because the ONLY reason why Lando was first is because they have given him an unfair pit stop advantage which shouldn't be because Oscar was the front driver. I mean we would understand if Lando overtook Oscar on the track fair and square but he DIDN'T. You guys are okay that the team will gift Lando the win but not okay with gifting the win to Oscar who was the rightful winner? That's why Lando fans have a bad reputation for not thinking straight even voting him DOTD even though he didn't deserve it.

I hate them so much lando shouldn’t have given the position back he was way faster it’s a match for championship not let’s play bestie
Acting like Lando hasn’t been bestie all season then they finally don’t play bestie with him and he moans and groans
He was only in front cause they undercut Oscar. If he was so much faster he could’ve have passed him during the race.
He wasn’t faster, Oscars overall race pace was better then Landos
@@andrewgriffith7742 Okay? Why does lando have the pay the price for it then? “Oh it’s for the team lando”. Bs. They are there to race and win, not to go out for a Sunday drive. Neither Lando nor Oscar is at fault, but Lando shouldn’t have to deal with the repercussions of the teams poor strategy.
@@SB0418 Are we living in a world where there's no ethics? Maybe in your country. Poor you. The team made Lando undercut Oscar because they have the sense of belief that Lando would at least respect the team and his team mate that he'll switch the position back which by the way Lando AGREED to do. But of course, he like a spoiled brat he is, he didn't want to give it back anymore. What a man of honour he is.
For all those saying that Oscar desearved the win, I didnt know that F1 race winners are decided on the opening lap and first stint.
Come on, racing is from first to last lap. Lando had much better race pace than Oskar + Oskar made 3 big mistakes while leading the race...
Also he should know his place in the team. He is 2nd driver and thats it.
In McLaren race winner is decided on lap1.
I don't understand why Lando didn't let Piastri through at around lap 60 and then asked for a fair fight till the checkered??
Sorry for Lando... It was a handed over win for Oscar, surely he is not feeling good about it
I feel McLaren owed this win to Piastri as every time he's had a chance to win they've thrown him under the bus strategy wise to help Lando, more than once.
The team looks unprofessional now they have pleaded with Lando over who they wanted to win. If I’m Oscar I don’t feel any semblance of victory nor do I gain respect from my managers here. They’ve made complete fools of themselves.
imagine if Lando misses out championship by 1~2 point from Max, I would love to see their team reaction
if oscar couldnt catch up then why should lando give it up. ridiculous. absolutely ridiculous. lando is too nice of a guy - taken advantage off. they messed up last race now they messed up again - feel gutted for lando.
Because the team choose to pit Lando before Oscar to cover Hamilton as strategy. That caused an undercut at Oscar. They wanted to correct that.
@@amfohr Yes I know - exactly they messed up. but on the radio they kept telling Lando to slow down because of tire wear. oscar could not catch Lando -- it is a race isnt it? I am aware they pitted Lando first -- they should have just pitted Oscar -- that is what they messed up.
It's a race!
Guess lando got it wrong. Rather than increasing the gap he should have swapped places early with Oscar and he still would have 15 laps to fight for the first place. Sometimes you need a work around!!!
Lando, he can’t catch up. McLaren leadership failed here. Making their driver feel guilty for racing. Sad day in F1
McLaren are as bad as Ferrari at handling the strategy. The two most legendary teams in the sport are a modern day laughing stock

Team messed it up. Again. They have no idea how to lead. They were again caught focusing too much on other teams and spooked into pitting Lando first which was the wrong call. The right thing was for Lando to give it back. His claim to being entitled to being given the win because he was ‘faster’ is BS given he trailed Oscar for 46 laps and got nowhere near enough to even enable DRS, let alone overtake. He was gifted the lead, it was not earned, and he did not earn the win after messing up the start by trying to cut off his team mate rather than defending against Max.
The team is too caught up with who deserves what instead of maximising chances of getting norris to challenge for the championship

Lol did Piastri not fall behind Norris in the second half of the race? He couldn't even catch Norris.

Oscar made 3 errors in race. Lando just showed how much faster he is than oscar. How Lando has come out as the villain in this situation is crazy. He's 2nd in the championship catching max. Oscar owes him big time.
That doesn’t matter… Lando lost it at the start, and when he got back behind Piastri he couldn’t pass. He should have gave up the position way earlier and maybe he’d have had a better shot.

Prioritising the manufacturers is all.
Here is the way I see it. It is on Mclarean that Piastri would have lost. Also forcing Lando to give the position back isn't fair either because after that last set of pits Lando was about 3 tenths a lap quicker than Piastri every lap. So even if they had pitted Piastri first Lando would have caught him.
