Practice practice practice practice and practice a lot more . On top of having a coach that has never lost a college match and also won 4 NCAA titles and an Olympic Gold. Nickal bought into the program , puts in the work , and reaps the rewards.
Cael Sanderson and Marcus LeVesseur were better
It boils down to the time spent practicing live wrestling. Guys like Bo Nickal have mat time experience that probably doubles or triples what their opponents have. Some coaches spend more time drilling than they do with live wrestling, and then they scratch their heads wondering why their team does poorly in competition.
Bo looks small at 197. He's so fast, his moves so clean that he can handle the size disadvantage. Jacobson is pretty good - former PIAA champ. But by the end of the match, Bo could have scored every time he tried to spin behind. Jacobson was gassed.
Cael had said that Bo weighed well over 200lbs

If you watch the match when he wrestled Gordon Ryan there comes a point in the match when Bo realizes the Gordon has been toying with him. As amazing as Bo is it’s mind blowing how incredible Gordon Ryan is.

Joe Reed the only foreseeable challenge so far is Kollin Moore and Nickal is still going to major Moore. With Moore being majored, one of tOSU’s best guys loses and makes tOSU’s chances of winning even more hopeless. I don’t see tOSU winning more than 4 of the ten matches and each of their wins will not be by bonus. The remaining at least four of the six matches will be bonus for penn state. You can’t beat that. Plus, two of the four wins for tOSU are definitely toss ups.

Those were definitely not near fall points.
They were, there's a certain angle you have to be past to get a count and a lot of wrestlers go just past the angle to get cheap tilt points

Forgive me wrestling fans, I am trying to learn....I have a questing at the :25 mark in the first round. Nickal gets 1 pt for every count he gets exposing the back? Sorry...trying to understand the scoring.
A Alekhine when the back is below a 45 degree angle then the ref will count for as long as the back is under the angle. The longer it’s held the more points they get

@aalekhine5109 you can get 2-3-or 4 points for a near fall. At the 2 count, it's 2, at the 3 count 3 at the 4 count 4. 4 is the max.

I would disagree slightly with the first reply. To me it looks more ankle pick (maybe/probably intending to transition into single) into duck. The difference to me is it seems to be popular to level change and snatch the ankle up than the conventional put your ear in his nip, shift his weight, pick up the light leg, single, because, when lanky the ankle pick transition is far less committal and risky. Both have their places, but that is what I saw.

I think he's experienced enough to know not try some things when it really matters. As with boxing, all it takes is one move. At that weight, if someone gets his back on the mat, he might not be able to get out.
