The funny thing about this car (the SL line, not just the AMG car) is, although it's not as aesthetically pleasing as previous generations nor is it as modern, it's still selling on par with the less expensive and much more current Lexus LC500 in the US. It just proves the appeal of this car.
Was this review done in Aurora Ontario? Good review. Sucks that the sl doesn't get the credit it deserves. Being overshadowed by the GT, this car is in a class of its own.
A perfect review, Mike. Doesn’t SL translate to ‘super light(a)’ in Italian or German(?). 4,100 lbs! I know the the SL very well (2005 SL55 AMG). What I am impressed with (or maybe even disappointed with) is that since 2005 - little has changed. Save the front headlight setup and the tech on the inside. I’m not sure the latest SL is worth over 8 times !!! what an ‘05 is currently worth.... I love it. But as you said... you got some serious contenders... once you start looking at a cars worth $200,ooo. Luckily (or sadly) , I don’t believe I’ll ever have that decision to make. Thanks for the amazing video.
I think it would be a sin if Mercedes goes to a soft-top as is rumored. Part of this car's legacy in the last few iterations is its hard-top convertible top. They have the AMG GT Roadster and the S-Class Cabriolet with soft tops, so Benz needs this hard-top.
Obviously the SL peaked during Bruno Sacco's triumphant epiphany also known as the R230. [2001-2011] That masterpiece of virtuoso engineering, the road dominant Twin Turbo V12 SL65 had no equal on the Autobahn or Interstates. No longer do SL's have jet engines for souls. They look just like another sedan up front not rakishly decadent. Even the sculpted gear shifter with it's ingenious start button on the tip has surrendered to a gored out electric switch. Don't even get me started on the R230's leather wrapped power roll bar.
it is a bit odd at times and certain angles, and as the owner of one I will admit it, but its still very rare on the road and I get a lot of nice car comments.. Looks better with the top down for sure, but people who say its ugly and I have heard that of some reviewers .. well they are wrong, its not ugly, its beautiful, just not as beautiful as a R8 or some other mid high end convertibles. I have a 2018, but could not bring myself to buy the 2013 to 2016 version, front end is not very nice.
I think they flubbed the design a bit (well a lot actually)... even the redesign on the front for 2017 and slight interior changes were wrong.. when you spend $200,000 canadian on a car like this, the front should NOT look the same as a E class or a C class. They just took the front styling cues from those lower models and put it on the SL and said now its up to date, but it isnt really different, which it should be... Interior is ok, seats are awesome, screen is smallish but fine, tech is good, lots of safety, but buttons and knobs etc feel dated a bit... Oh well, at 6'5" tall it was pretty much my only convertible choice for something that cruises really nice or can be sporty when you want also... 911? I fit but I just fell in love with the sound of this car and I have wanted one since I was 20.
A shame that MB has abandoned the SL - even the lowly C Class has current-tech dash and transmissions available. The AMG line-up is boy-racer vulgar, the S Class ia well, an S Class - the SL occupied a pinnacle of personal luxury coupe/roadster for decades. Now it's the odd-model out and MB is sadly exploiting its heritage and panche.
well put! Seems to me that MB is kinda lost with their fake AMG models they spitting out every each month.... Another model they shoud not have abandoned was the CL..... man that design was perfect!!!
I contend that there is still a place for the regular SL, but the AMG version is definitely squeezed by the GT series especially. S class: super cushy SL: sporting but with feature of luxury GT car GT series: hardcore sport

I don't get the so many dislikes. That review was neat and professional to me.
Great video! I love the SL class, soo classy!
Mike, your presentation skills are amazing man. Keep it up
I appreciate your kind words!

It was! I was up near Markham, Goodwood Kartways, etc.
im in waterloo. I have a 2018 SL63
Excellent review.
Good review.. top notch

Kellington Link i think it means „Sport Leicht“ so sport light... Italian super light is SuperLeggera, like on the Lambos
Thank you. I appreciate you clarifying that. I ‘thought’ it was something like what you said. Still.. 4,100 pounds.... hardly what I’d call light.
Definitely not light! With that big engine over the front wheels the front axle feels less free than something like an F type or the GT series.
Где звук выхлопа?

Just drove a 78' 450sl with the soft top AND a hard top. Cool car, and absolutely nothing like the modern version.
To me personally the quintessential SL has a soft top and a removable hard top. Personally I'd like to see it go back to that!
beautiful car, great review.
This car is Beautiful I love them. Mercedes Benz to the world and beyond.
Hey Zack! I saw you on a flight. You were sitting first row. I was gonna say hi but you were sleeping. Rock on

Will you be reviewing the BENZ A-Class hatchback? If so, when?
Where is this video take place? Is there fall there?
It's a Canadian channel
He said Ontario.
Shot north of Toronto about 1.5months ago, hence no fall colours ;)
A car that truely suits the reviewer's last name. Love that proper V8 engine
It's a great engine, but not as great as the 4 litre bi-turbo in the new c63s/amg gt's.
Awesome 😀 😀 and by the way I subscribe to your TH-cam channel .
Nice music my guy
Mike.. Professional as always! Clean review! And for the car, im sorry but it just looks dated.. Especially the interiors.
Agreed on the styling, a bit chunky and mish-mash. I prefer the original pre-facelift R230 from 03-08

Michelin 4S tires make the car launch and lock up much much better. The stock continental 5P are too slippery

I know, but I don't see the color changes on the trees.
Anyone else like before the video started!?
Mike is good but nobody can replace Zack!
"Lose your license"? Nah, as a reviewer, you're automatically exempt. 🙂

Always best in class. Mercedes.
It's So Flippen Expensive 0_o Only Silver-Haired Men Can Afford This.
If you were young & wealthy you'd get the AMG GT-C.
The newest Mercs have very nice high end interiors...BUT NOT THIS ONE. Interior already looks dated.
It's essentially the same interior that debuted with the SLS AMG, a vehicle that came out in 2010.
BlueChinchillaEatingDorito well that explains the dates looks.
i believe the next generation Mercedes SL will rival the Bentley Continental GT, if there will be one!
Just remember to trade it in before it need the major brake that would have you living in your car.
🚘❤
This cars long in the tooth pointless review when there's so many new cars out
Looks dated...... what is MB up to??? I know.... fake AMG models!
Still slower than the Tesla Roadster.
Scotty doesn't approve
Would you recommend this car for my 16 year old? He is a really nice boy.
YES!! He'd get all his mates Moms excited
