    I would argue that the moniker “Hammer of the Scots” is still applicable; a hammer doesn’t crush a sword at the forge- it hardens one.

    • @lorneclose7312
      @lorneclose7312 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      Actually the hammer in the forge shapes the sword and Edwards actions shaped Scotland into a sword that he would never truly be able to break

    • @tmmccormick86
      @tmmccormick86 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @ that’s more or less what I was getting at; Edward’s repeated interference and incursions hardened resistance to English rule and provided opportunities for improvement among the military class

    I do love all these old kings with a "Ozymandias Complex" for want of a better name for it. They yoke together as many lands as they can and award themselves some grand title, only for the whole thing to fall apart almost before their mortal remains are settled in their graves. Handshakes beat hammers every time imo.

    I live not far from the place where Edward died and the reason he was in that particular place was because there is a tidal route across the swamp, sand and mud that runs from what is now The Esk Boathouse across to the Lochmaben Stone. That's also why the Battle of Sark took place there too - it was where the tidal route meets the Scottish coast. You can see the Scottish shore from Edwards monument. So close and yet so far.....

    The heart of the Bruce was taken by Sir James Douglas and ended up initially in Teba in Andalucia. Douglas and his soldiers got into a battle to help protect the castle. There is a monument to Douglas in Teba and they still celebrate Douglas Day every August. Teba has it's own pipe band and the locals wear kilts on Douglas Day.

    Thanks for another great video Bruce! Your commentary on turds wasn't lost on me; dysentery took this horrible man! How Edward Longshanks died is proof that greed for power is no way to live a good life! True power comes by how you live. Edward lost his real power trying to conquer what wasn't his to begin with! His family never recovered from his overpowering ego or the lack of money and allies that his ways dissolved. I wish that history was taught in schools the way you teach it. More folks might stay awake to learn its lessons!

    I often find in death people are given titles they didn't deserve or glories they sought after but didn't achieve. In death, we are harmless and that emboldens men to pity the memory of the dead by bolstering their deeds with fiction or excess to content the discomfort in our hearts. It's why poets don't get famous until after they die.
