Another fascinating history of Scotland ,i just love the delivery . If more history teachers gave lectures and presentations like this , i am totally convinced more people would take an interest in history.
Sir, your videos are top shelf. I've learned so much about Scotland's history by watching yours. The topics you bring to us are filled with facts you can't get elsewhere, your comical remarks add a giggle or smile, and the scenery in all is so beautiful in the countryside, the cities, and quaint villages. Thank you for bringing these to us who follow along for the tour. ❤
@ that’s more or less what I was getting at; Edward’s repeated interference and incursions hardened resistance to English rule and provided opportunities for improvement among the military class
Another masterwork, Mr. F. I do love all these old kings with a "Ozymandias Complex" for want of a better name for it. They yoke together as many lands as they can and award themselves some grand title, only for the whole thing to fall apart almost before their mortal remains are settled in their graves. Handshakes beat hammers every time imo.
I live not far from the place where Edward died and the reason he was in that particular place was because there is a tidal route across the swamp, sand and mud that runs from what is now The Esk Boathouse across to the Lochmaben Stone. That's also why the Battle of Sark took place there too - it was where the tidal route meets the Scottish coast. You can see the Scottish shore from Edwards monument. So close and yet so far.....
The heart of the Bruce was taken by Sir James Douglas and ended up initially in Teba in Andalucia. Douglas and his soldiers got into a battle to help protect the castle. There is a monument to Douglas in Teba and they still celebrate Douglas Day every August. Teba has it's own pipe band and the locals wear kilts on Douglas Day.
Thanks for another great video Bruce! Your commentary on turds wasn't lost on me; dysentery took this horrible man! How Edward Longshanks died is proof that greed for power is no way to live a good life! True power comes by how you live. Edward lost his real power trying to conquer what wasn't his to begin with! His family never recovered from his overpowering ego or the lack of money and allies that his ways dissolved. I wish that history was taught in schools the way you teach it. More folks might stay awake to learn its lessons!
That IS ironic. I've been researching that very area about another medieval battle. I wanted to go and see that Edward I memorial. You've done that for me! Thanks!
I often find in death people are given titles they didn't deserve or glories they sought after but didn't achieve. In death, we are harmless and that emboldens men to pity the memory of the dead by bolstering their deeds with fiction or excess to content the discomfort in our hearts. It's why poets don't get famous until after they die.
Aethelstan didn't need to conquer Scotland the Scottish kings (Vikings) bent the knee and he was technically the only English one out of the ones listed.
@tallshort1849 Battle os Athelstaneford proves he felt it necessary to try. Ecgfrith was Anglo-Saxon. The fact that they weren't all English is irrelevant to the point.
@tallshort1849 Do you mean Brunanburh in 937AD? Different King from Athelstane at Athelstaneford in 832AD. Apart from that I'm not sure what you have in mind.
I always enjoy your history lessons! I know my family comes from Scotland. My direct ancestor left Belfast and came to Savannah, Georgia in 1769. I'm a member of the Boyd DNA Project. Along with about 30 others, according to my DNA results, I'm a member of the "Noble line" whatever that means. That's my Scottish connection. Keep up the good work!👍
Great video! You have a knack for adding humor into a very informative and interesting video! I love hearing any reference to Roxburgh. The area of Philadelphia, PA, USA where I grew up, Roxborough, was named after Roxburghshire, Scotland where one of the earliest settlers of the area, Andrew Robeson was from. It reminds me of the connection that my old neighborhood has with Scotland.
Edward the Elder, Edwards the Martyr and Edward the Confessor all came before Longshanks (Although the first two were not kings of all England. It was post 1066 ethnic cleansing that made Longshanks Edward the First.
Like Richard the Lionheart it appears that Edward I was overly mythologized in the centuries after his death. Thank you for setting the record straight. All the best to you.
If I did my research correctly my family was fighting in Scotland around that time. I'm not quite sure of all the details except from following my family tree from Cantwell, Fox, Martin, Mooney, Battonberg and more. It seems longshanks got hammered by the scots and your words stand strong. Thank you for your wisdom friend.
Hey Bruce. Thanks for all your work. Can you please do a video on the sacking of Dundee and of the loss of the plundered loot of the local areas of Dundee and to which proceeded to sink in the River Tay in a storm after the attack which might I say cost the lives of many people of this City at the hands of the powers of England. You would bring this little bit of Scottish history to life with your narration and humour 👍🏴 all be it not a humorous event but you have the knack of bringing humour to Scottish history even though it is mostly tragic 👍🏴😉
Erm he did batter control and rule us. We won at Stirling cos he was not there. We never had a shot at independance until he died. Do not kid yourself. He ruled us.
He must have been hell bent on conquering Scotland if he told his son to drag his bones up there after his death. He was rolling in his grave as they were literally rolling his grave to Bannockburn.
As soon as we gain our independence he'll spin in his grave. We have the talent and drive in Scotland to put a colony on Mars, but we need a booming economy before we can afford it. Just think how Longshanks would react to that, the Scots beating the English to Mars and making it work. What a way to flip the English tyrants of old 😂
I always wondered how much flattery there was to be had in the nomer malleus. Since first learning of that affectation and given that none knows for *sure* why his tomb is so extraordinarily plain, I've often wondered if it was in fact something of a slight; After all to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
English kings always had a thing about being entitled to the entire island. Was reading about AEthelstan the other day who, as soon as he'd united all the Anglo-Saxons under one king, immediately set about trying to conquer Wales.
Another great vid, Bruce! 👍🏼 Personally I think the whole ‘Hammer of the Scots’ is derogatory to us, and I hate hearing it! Btw, I’m glad you moved outside the Greyhound Inn cos when you were inside, Foreigners ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’ was distracting me! 😂

yes indeed, and there would be a bunch more students saying; "wait, what did he say?" 🤗😁
Absolutely! I had a history teacher in high school who you could tell loved her subject because she made classes fun and interesting!
Longshanks’ greed and arrogance defeated him. Your videos are top class, Bruce.
Rochester Castle in Kent never gave in too him no one left to surrender
Great as ever Bruce !!

Great stories about Scotland's past and history. Always look forward to your next.
Thanks for all your great storytelling, Bruce!
I would argue that the moniker “Hammer of the Scots” is still applicable; a hammer doesn’t crush a sword at the forge- it hardens one.
Actually the hammer in the forge shapes the sword and Edwards actions shaped Scotland into a sword that he would never truly be able to break
@ that’s more or less what I was getting at; Edward’s repeated interference and incursions hardened resistance to English rule and provided opportunities for improvement among the military class
Yeah I get that. Im a bladesmith and couldn't help correcting the error
@ I only know the rudiments 😅 thank you for the correction!
Haha, i like that one. Essentially Edward I forged the "sword" that defeated his son in 1314. :)

Thanks Bruce for the interesting History lesson, maybe explaining why even after 1746 Scots and Scotland maintain an identity
Marc Morris's book A Great and Terrible King is very good on how Edward's invasion of Scotland was a dreadful mistake.
That Nelson haha made me snort my sip of Black Douglas, some went in my eye 😅

Richard the Lionheart was a rockstar of his day. According to all sources he was a living legend. Even Saladin respected him.
