- What is up all you Pokémon maniacs out there! PikiPikaPapa is back with a totally new type of video. There is a TON of talk out there about Disney's Lorcana and I wanted to take a moment to add my two cents into the mix. With that being said I know a lot of people will feel strongly one way or the other so it will be a blast to hear all the opinions!!

As a huge Disney fan I’ve seen products like these come and go usually with much fan fare in the beginning like this. We shall see how it plays out. Awesome content!

but disney was never so commited to make an actually competetiv game. It was always collectible cards for kids. This is more targeted to young adult card gamers

Totally agree. Not to mention if a scandal happens at Ravensburger, Disney will drop them in a heart beat.
A few details missed;
The game is being developed by Ryan Miller who has experience in TCGs.
The art was also deliberate to look more classic 90's cartoon.
They've commented adding Marvel and Star Wars and at this time the anwser is 'no'. The focus is that classic Disney magic and both Marvel and Star Wars come with their own identity. Pixar is of course eventually going to happen.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out! As a big Disney fan I'm pulling for it! You only get one shot at a first launch so hopefully the decision for the 90's art is loved by the TCG space. I have a lot of faith that Marvel and Star Wars will eventually come. My guess is that would be a different licensing agreement as they were acquisitions by Disney and likely operate as subsidiaries of so they might be in a wait and see pattern on those. Big stake in Yugioh, Pokemon, stating next month with MTG LOTR and will be opening Disney Lorcana. Its gonna be a very fun next couple of months for sure. Paldea Evolved and LoTR in the same month 😮😮😮
I think Yu Gi Oh is already done. Everytime I go to Target they still have Yugioh and Hockey Cards left on the shelves. Baseball, Basketball, Football and Pokemon are always gone.

Between Pokemon Obsidian Flames, 151, TCG Classic, Disney Lorcana, and a few other products coming this 2nd half of the year, it's going to be interesting where everyone positions their coin.
I'm hoping the hype insights competition for some other cool products coming out of left field, but I couldn't imagine what could stand up to the hype.
I think 151 is going to be huge for the nostalgia-heads like myself.

Looking at the artwork that is coming in this set then in my mind it is of a novice nature typical of a start up.
If they look hard at pokemon designers of the now they should up their game as long as they can commission high end designers who are not cheap and a smallish pool to nudge into.
My budget is to stick with Pokemon and watch the sideshow.
I couldn’t agree with this more!! You only get one shot at a first launch and they have the playbook for recent success by looking at competitors in the TCG space. Seems like they kinda phoned first edition in and are hoping to lean on the Disney name… time well tell but I’m disappointed with what I’ve seen so far. Always appreciate your input man!!

@@PikaPikaPapa So I am actually out using making decks and using them at my LGS. They are adding game mechanics with every release, they plan on having tournaments, etc. Do I think Lorcana will topple Magic, Pokemon or any other TCG --- no. Do I think if it will find their niche, yes.
I like the analysis and facts you shared. I’m really interested to see if (and how) this new TCG willI impact Pokémon. I agree on your conclusion that sealed products will probably not go sky rocket like Pokemon did. I won’t buy sealed items, but might pick up the top chase card a few months after release (once prices are more affordable, I hope).
I think we will see a share of wallet impact meaning that now we will have a new hyped player entering the scene but people will only have so much money to go around so who gets it and how much of it will be interesting to watch. I do know some Pokémon people will absolutely buy into Lorcana which might effect the pricing and availability of Poke products that launch at the same time. It will am awesome to watch, I know that much!!

I’ve wanted to be able to get on the bandwagon, but I just can’t seem to get there. So many Disney products come and go. I feel like this is simply a licensee puzzle maker that is going to release a card game that will cash in for the hype.
I hope I’m wrong, but just can’t seem to get on board with this one… that said I’ll still buy a few cases like everyone else.

I understand why you're looking at it through more of an investment perspective. but Disney announced they're going to print more so that it will be more available. The only reason it's jacked up high right now is because the first print run can't meet demand. They will mass produce to meet demand as it's the first set to hook buyers. They also said they're more interested in the games playability more than collectibility. The cards don't have crazy holos, and won't have any first edition stamps of any nature. They want all disney lovers to get their products and continue buying future releases. People are treating it like first edition pkmn and it's far from that. I think it's best just to enjoy playing the game. The mechanics are relatively simple and similar to hearthstone. Until it's reprinted and distributed, prices will remain high till Q1 2024.
Totally aligned with all this. I think sealed First Chapter will be the only way to go and it’ll take years to see some/if any meaningful returns. I’m glad they are printing the heck out of it. I do believe it will be ripped a lot so singles should be readily available well into the future. We are a huge Disney family and we’ve ripped plenty to play with!! I also don’t have a ton of faith in Ravensburgerbut that’s a different story 😂. I know no matter what it’s going to be a ton of fun to watch it all play out!! Thank you for the EPIC comment!! Something to remember:
Disney’s stock has been encompassed in in controversy for years now.
They fired their CEO over night due to company financial struggles.
They have struggled at the box office under every single one of their IP’s (Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Disney Classic) in the past few years.
Disney is notorious for over-producing the hell out of any merchandise with their name attached to it. Other Disney collectible are very mass produced.
I’m not saying it won’t be successful but its definitely over-hyped.
Two claps for all of the above. I completely agree. Especially now that the Infinity Wars saga is done I think they are struggling hard to find that next behemoth in the box office. I know my family wasn't a fan of the new Dr Strange, Black Widow, or Scarlet Witch movies and up to that point our kids and us were all about those characters. This is hyped to the max and it will be hard to live up to it! I will say this, if anyone can do it Iger can. He has the Disney magic in a bottle it seems and a lot of us lifelong Mouse heads think he can bring the Magic back!

Seems like a lot of people here are ignorant to the fact that magic the gathering veterans from the 2010 time developed Lorcana.
I hope that means the gameplay will be awesome!! I’m an old OLD MtG guy and my kids and I will be playing some Lorcana for sure so it will be nice to knock the rust off and show them the old man can still throw some cards!! Appreciate the input man, have an EPIC one!!
How many companys make disney products? From what i understand thats kind of what killed the old wax sports cards correct me if im wrong of course but so many different companys printing the same cards essentially
Whew, the list is longgggggg I can't remember what % of Disney's rev comes from licensing deals but it is a big %. Junk wax was driven by a couple of factors and multiple companies overproducing was absolutely a driver in that!! Since Ravensburger will be the sole producer of Lorcana we might not see that in this product but to your point the sheer number of companies that produce Disney products is mind-blowing!! Working at a toy store and went to an educational program hosted by Ravensburger. Some cards are drawn exclusively for the cards, never seen by the too animators of Disney. So he kinda got me with that information
Oh man that’s crazy!! Honestly not sure how I feel about that. On one hand Disney animators are some of the best of the best but on the other I like TCG animators making TCG artwork. I will say the artwork I’ve seen so far has fallen flat in my opinion so maybe they need to hit up some of those imagineers after all!! Truly appreciate this awesome insight!! Thank you for sharing!!

Yeah I did this prior to Lorcana coming out. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it ages over the next few years!!!
My local store has first chapter booster box for 129.99...wonder if it's go time.
I just picked up my very first First Chapter BB up for that exact price. I'm completely comfortable there and I'm going to snag Floodborn here soon too. I'd like to have 2 of each just so I can have one for the PC and one to possibly flip way down the road!!

Clear concise assessment of the situation. I can admit I may have gotten swept up in the hype. Was a really competitive TCG Player 9 years ago. Now being a dad my focus has shifted more towards collecting and playing games with the family. Was planning on picking up quite a bit to hold as a speculative investment but my step off the gas a little bit. Regardless it will be nice to get back into some TCG's again and this is the first time my wife has expressed interest in TCG's so Disney has something going for it at least. Cool to see you are in Florida as well. We are about an hour from Disney but haven't had annual passes in a few years. Looking forward to more Lorcana content.
That's awesome my friend, we share a similar story. I was a big MTG guy back in the day but then life got in the way and I fell off. I've been a serious sports card collector for years now but my kids got into Pokémon a few years ago and I made the transition from sports cards to TCG again. I actually find more enjoyment in the TCG space so it's been a wonderful switch back. I, like you, have a wife who has found some excitement in Lorcana which again, only adds to the enjoyment I get from the product. We are about a hour due East of Orlando and are big Disney fans so the product really hits home of all of us. Appreciate the input man and I hope you and the family have an EPIC weekend!!

If I were Bob, here are the factors I would be considering: 1. Magic is a $1 billion money machine with some 40 million players. Hasbro has been absolutely shredding all of its goodwill with those players and they are desperate for something of value to collect, which has led to the recent boom of new TCG IPs, many of which have been wildly successful. 2. Disney's entertainment division has been hemorrhaging money as they release flop after flop in the box office, making Disney desperate for a solid source of revenue.
If I were Bob, I would not only have Lorcana on my radar, I would be looking at it as a potential new golden goose for the company.
All great call outs and I’ll be buying Lorcana and pulling for it but Disney doesn’t own Lorcana Ravensburger does vs Hasboro which wholly owns MtG. Disney has licensed out the image, name and branding rights to Ravensburger. I don’t know their contract details but usually it’s in the 10-15% range for the licensor. So even if Lorcana becomes the biggest TCG in the world Disney’s take is 10-15%. Can it make an impact on the P&L, sure but Disney will need to figure out their own wholly owned products in order to get things back in line. I’m an annual pass holder to Disney and love it so I’m pulling for it on all fronts but sadly Lorcana alone won’t solve Bob’s issues.
@@PikaPikaPapa All very valid points, and if the first set performs well and shows promise for a future, Disney may look to acquire Ravensburger to solve that problem of only getting a small percentage kickback.
That price point will hurt the average players from buying product. I believe it will be collectors and scalpers buying up product for FOMO and hope it will retain value over time. The hype will be real at first but i am unsure of the sustainability as it will be tough to compete with the other tcgs who have better artwork and lower price points. But time will tell.
Totally agree which makes me sad. I’d love for this to be an awesome product for parents and kids to enjoy together as the next generation of TCG players are out there!! To your point though, the crazy price point and the HUGE amount of hype around it will likely discourage the core group of players from taking part in it. My only hope is that they print a ton as that’s the only way to combat scalping and ridiculous price appreciation!! Better artwork? Surely you are not talking about Mtg, Pokemon or Yugioh. Mtg artwork as been inconsistent at best for the past decade and the later two shouldn't even be mentionned in a conversation about art.
Price point isn't that bad. In € Pokémon has 10 cards costs 5€, Yugioh cost 4€ for 7-9 cards, and Lorcana will cost 6€ for 12 cards. Also you will get 2-3 rare+ cards instead of just 1.
I think this is gonna be a great tcg for players and collectors. Less so for investors.
Do we know what Ravensburger's stock is? I want to keep an eye on it.

The CEO change angle with Disney is interesting, I was about to say they are getting a bit too loose with their IP with cards but it might be a good change and have Ravensburger be the only company making Disney TCG in the states. I think people were expecting Ravensburger to be Disney's exclusive TCG maker much like pokemon but with how loose they have been with their IP I wasn't as confident hopefully the CEO's classic mentality helps cement Ravensburger to be the main and sole distributor for Disney TCG cards.
It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. I’ll have my popcorn popped and take it all in. I’ll tell you Iger is a beast, when he got the reigns back there was jubilation in the Disney streets. I’m pulling for Ravensburger I think the market as a whole will do well with a good Lorcana product but it’s a tall tall task!! Appreciate you as always my friend, hope you had an awesome weekend!!
I think this is gonna mostly go after mtg. Wizard had really hurt his community lately saturate the product and ingress the price drastically. Disney fan adult even will give it an chance the art is good. The game have room for improvement after the first set . I also think the fact that it s a race to the finish line will make it healthier on a multiplayer format. I also bring up MTG because the team behind it have been know for it s work on EDH wish is also a more multiplayer format and casual. I think this is a game that will have an stronger casual community then competitive. While appealing to the collector and people who value art and flavor for the cash cow.

I'm talking old old like from Alpha through 5th Edition and it breaks my heart to see where the game is now that Hasbro owns it. I do believe if Lorcana, to your point, can crush the art and game play early it will be able to shave off a bit of market share. For me i like that the girls and I can collect and play it together like we do Pokemon and I'm sure it will encourage new families ot get into the TCG space! I think you're exactly right that Lorcana doesn't need to upend Mtg or Pokemon to be successful. If people play and enjoy the game then that's what matters. I also think we'll see kids getting into Lorcana then transition into other tcgs as they get older. That's great for all of the tcg communities

I'll bite when it comes out and stash a box. However, we know this will be printed to no end until it runs dry just as you say. As for art I think they are going the cheap route. Using what is already available because there is so much Disney content we will never see the use of any outside or inside artist creating new art for cards. Why bother paying someone to create when its already there.
We will do the same here, buy and stash a few boxes and open some for fun but that’s about it. That’s a good call out on the art and, in my mind, just another miss. Imagine if they did some new exciting alt art type Disney cards with some Hulked up and Maxed out Disney characters!! Yet, alas, they went the easy/cheap route which is rarely a recipe for success. It has been confirmed several times that all of the art has been created new, and are unique for this card game.

Imagine Ravensburger blowing off with insanly good arts wich people wouldnt recognize as old original classic disney anymore ...
they would not buy, bcs it would look like an fancy copy ...
They had to do it this way, i guess.
I mean look at the shadowing and the "bad" colour choices in some cards, let it look like taken out of the movie, this had to be done by purpose.
You know I heard they did it on purpose to look like 1990's cartoons which is cool and all I just hope it hits home with the playing and collecting space as you only get one chance to make a first impression and the look is really unique. Disney is the king of business passive income because they've become the king of IP! A lot of people could ask, maybe Disney should buy Ravensburger to have more control.. Why?! Why get active when you can sit back and collect royalties based off your own IP. Its the same with companies like Dooney & Burke and Loungefly, who make so many premium products for Disney that are actually sold on property.
Speaking of Dooney & Burke, there magic bands are awesome! Magic bands are such a cool collection to have too... I think my family has upwards of 200 now lol

One run on my bucket list that I surprisingly havent done having lived in Orlando is the Disney marathon in Janaury. I was signed up for the Star Wars half about 6 years ago but got sick and couldnt do it

Ravengburger would be behind Konami that owns Yu-Gi-Oh, and lets not for get Bandai has Dragonball Super and One Piece which has exploeded in popularity. So it's no where near 3rd place.
Yeah they have one tough hill to climb and I dunno if they have the horses in the stable to get there. I'm excited to see how it all pans out over the next few years but it's hard to dethrone these entrenched TCG goliaths!!

I haven’t read or heard that anywhere which doesn’t make it untrue I just haven’t heard that. I did, however, ask the Google real quick and all I could find was an interview with a Lorcana Co Lead designer where he talked about a desire for Lorcana not be become a collectors product. It was on thegamer.com if you want to check it out! Again, none of this means anything but I’d be surprised if they short printed this as it seems like they want to go the gaming avenue which will likely sell more product.
I have heard that they have doubled the production because of the high demand. So, if that is right, the answer to your question might be "no". But, tbh, I have heard it in another youtube video and didnt bother to check if the information was real.

I don’t know why you keep mentioning “Lorcana first edition” when they won’t be printing any cards with “first edition”. I hope there isn’t as much hype going around so playable singles can be affordable, and I don’t want investors becoming the scalpers of this set that prevent us from getting cards to play with.
You’re spot on!! I should have said First Chapter not First Edition. My TCG journey started in MTG and we used to call Alph Beta and Unlimited first edition as it was the first release of the genre BUT now First Edition cards are stamped so I should have had my terminology right. Awesome call out!! I am completely in alignment with you that I hope they print enough to satisfy the demand and keep the prices reasonable. @@PikaPikaPapa Fair enough, in all fairness it’s the first ever print run of Lorcana, so it’s a first edition in its own way! Definitely, I agree. If they can have the availability to produce enough product where players can get packs/singles affordably, and investors can buy and hold the product they want at the same time, this will be an epic game that can definitely stand against some of the giants. :) I was a little harsh on my wording so i’m sorry, I appreciate your level-headed response!
No worries brother, I totally get it! I tell my kids all the time that people remember what you say NOT what you mean so words matter. I always appreciate when someone can hold me to that same standard!! This also seems to be a product with a lot of strong feelings tied to it on all sides so I always attempt to view opinions from all angles. Just know you’re all good in my book and at the end of the day I’m just freaking excited to get this product rolled out and to see what the heck happens 😂😂. Not doubting you but can you share where you saw that? Are they coming in the second set? I know the first set is all classic Disney characters and they talked about Marvel and Star Wats in future sets and I’d freaking love to get a look at what those might be!! It might totally change the way I view these first few launches!! Appreciate you man!!

While i thank you for sharing some facts and graphs...you absolutely drowned them with opinion the whole vid...I agree with most of your opinion but at the end of the day the market will decide as always...I still have OG Pokémon badges from wotc actual stores so I been in tcgs for awhile...more excited for these then base set Pokémon and the lgs path they are taking is comparable. Wotc was a nothing novelty store until they licensed Pokémon if I remember correctly
I’m an old MTG guy myself!! I played from launch through 5th Edition then focused solely on Sports Cards till about 2 years ago when I transitioned back into TCG (thanks to my awesome kids) in the form of Pokémon. Your spot on as the market decides the price on all of these products since they have no true inherent value, at the end of the day they are pieces of cardboard and ink. It will be really really interested to see the supply and market demand of Lorcana. I’m pumped to watch it all play out and even more excited to play some with my kiddos!! let’s start with the quantity of the D23, which is the only first edition cards that will be released. You say 10k Mickey cards.. we don’t even know how many Mickey cards had been released and to date we have 422 psa 10… and we are 8 months out from when they were released.. it’s doubtful we will see another 9,500 more psa 10 Mickey cards get graded. Once again these are the only 1st edition cards.. they will be reprinted but not as a 1st edition card.. 2nd let’s not forget how many Disney collector the market has.. way more than Pokémon.. I would dare to say Star Wars alone may be above Pokémon..and to follow up on something people seem to forget.. TH-cam videos of Pokémon are geared around collecting not playing.. I hear everyone say there’s no chance that Disney will become as big as Pokémon. Pokémon is no longer a game that is played in the masses. It’s more geared around collecting and all the big names on TH-cam are educating people to collect cards which is exactly what Disney already has…. collectors.
When was the last time you heard a top (over 100k) TH-cam Pokémon guy say anything about playing? It’s always pull rates, rarity and profits… which is collecting!!
Believe it or not I totally agree with you!! I stated that I believe those D3 cards are fair priced at $2K and I think in the long run they will hold value really well!! Especially that Mickey and Elsa!! I was referring to the first chapter cards where people like me will rip and grade like no tomorrow, I bet there will be tons of those in PSA 10!! I’m also that exact Poke person you’re talking about I’m not really into the game just love the shows and characters and cardboard but we are also HUGE Disney fans!! We love the house of Mouse and have annual passes. Like I said I’m excited for Lorcana and we will absolutely be buying and ripping as well as buying and holding but I’m not planning on purchasing a vacation home in Maui based on future prospects of my sealed Lorcana collection 😂😂. No matter what, markets always do better with competition so I’m excited for another big name to hit the TCG space and in a few years we can all sit back and discuss how it all played out!! Truly appreciate the thoughtful and awesome input here man. At the end of the day we all elevate each other!! Have an EPIC Monday!!
@@PikaPikaPapa I think if you really wanted to be early on the content and do a video that gets passed around I would discuss how MTG possibly could be the last largely played game and how Pokémon has lost playing value by gained collector status. Then we have Pikachu being written out of the Pokémon lineup and how losing a main character and card style change may ultimately encourage Pokémon collectors to look at Lorcana.. I would also touch on the Pokémon TH-cam videos being created and how it’s geared towards collecting and cross reference right at to Lorcana and crazy Disney collectors.. trust me this could be a very large video.. don’t forget to use the #disney tags and not just Pokémon tags.. just a thought..
A few more thought. We have the Disney 100 year cards (several different boxes have been released) that have gotten out of control which really brings the Disney collectors to the front.. then we have rare cards.. to really get a Pokémon rare card its either eBay or a card shop. But with Lorcana you could get your cards at the parks much like people seek when getting pins..

So what’s your retainer fee because that’s a freaking EPIC idea!! I currently operate at a NET loss but I can pay you in smiles, high-fives, words of encouragement and an occasional Snickers bar!!! Seriously though I think that’s a really cool idea and I’ll put some brainpower into it. I was a big MTG player way back in the day so I’m a fan of the gaming side. Just as life got busier and busier it because easier to collect vs play. Which, I would assume, is true for a lot of us as we grow our families and careers and I’m sure that’s a factor. Truly appreciate it my friend, maybe I’ll send you some script notes!!

Nah, won’t spend any money on this. Stick to what works and works well. We all know Pokémon just works and keeps getting better with all the amazing alt arts lately. Nothing else is really coming close.

I think Lorcana will be fine. It will be in the top 3 for sure. The one that should be worried is Yu Gi Oh. I always see it in stock next to Hockey cards at the Target stores. Pokemon, Baseball, Football and Basketball cards are always gone. Now that is not a good sign for Yu Gi Oh.
@@hihellothere100 I don't this so, have you actually seen the cards? They're so ugly and kiddy, reminds me of a free gift you'd pull out of the cereal box they really didn't put much effort into them at all and they're gonna run out of characters to use pretty quickly and the conflicting art styles on different Disney characters just makes them look so weird together, Moana just doesn't look right next to that Robin Hood fox.

Yeah, it's been insane to watch the prices of the parks and every conceivable accessory to them go though the roof. As a FL resident it's not too bad but if you are coming from out of state forget about it! I've been going to DIsney a long time and am still a holder of annual passes but it does feel like the magic is being lost a bit. It will be interesting to see what happens with Lorcana. At the end of the day it will be us in the TCG space that decide with our wallets!! Appreciate the input and have an awesome one!
I think that price point is gonna kill the game before it gets a chance.
It really makes me sad too. If anything I was hoping this product would come in a little lower then other TCG products so a huge audience would have an opportunity to buy and rip!!
If the Booster Boxes I might buy 2. One to open and one to save. But if they are too expensive, at like $300 a box, I'll have to pass and probably just buy more S&V151 product.
Price point isn't that bad. In € Pokémon has 10 cards costs 5€, Yugioh cost 4€ for 7-9 cards, and Lorcana will cost 6€ for 12 cards. Also you will get 2-3 rare+ cards instead of just 1.
I think this is gonna be a great tcg for players and collectors. Less so for investors.
