Thanks Bob! Brushes are great and I use them a lot, but it really frees you up if you can use them at will, rather than see them as essential. I think that brushing as an essential part of the "bum ditty" transferred into clawhammer from the Pete Seeger stroke/up-picking (I'm not alone in that thinking), Also, in my experience, it is easier to learn/teach drop thumb if one plays single strings first, then incorporates brushing. Everyone is different, of course, but in general, this seems to be the case.
