Welcome to my channel! I play the 5-string banjo in a variety styles and this channel is dedicated to sharing what I’ve learned, and am still learning, in 50+ years of picking.
“spooky tune" - clawhammer banjo with tablature
Corresponding free tab is available on the Banjo Hangout site: www.hangoutstorage.com/banjohangout.org/storage/tabs/s/tab-spooky-tune-ch-27501-51251726102024.pdf
The little piece was composed for the piano by Flavio Belardo and posted as a Short titled “Secret Piano” on his TH-cam channel. I was looking for something in a minor key to post for Halloween, when this popped up in my feed. I loved Flavio’s piano performance and knew I had to try it on the banjo. It doesn’t quite have all the flavor of his piano piece, but I think it works on the banjo, and I gotta say, it is a challenging piece for clawhammer. I’ve given it the subordinate name “spooky tune” here because that is what I was going for.

That’s great to hear Flint!
Excellent Jack. Many Thanks. STP
Thanks STP!
Sounds fantastic! Enjoyed watching the hammer-ons and pull-offs.
Thanks so much. Yes, this one was a finger workout.
Bravo!
Thanks!
Great rendition!
Thanks!
Awesome!!
Thanks!
This is also on my “learn” list. Nice arrangement, thanks Jack!
Great to hear Mike. Have at it! People often add more notes to over the Waterfall, but I really like the cleaner, simpler way Henry Reed played it. Tried to emulate that in this rendition.
I have always wanted to learn this song . . . and this is the version I will learn. Clean, simple, beautiful. Thanks so much.
Glad to help you along! and btw, the melody is pretty much how Henry Reed played it-very spare. People have ornamented the tune much more, but I really like the simple, original version. Have fun with it!
This is very good, it is helping me to get back into playing again as it has been so long. I hope you will do some more stripped down version of other tunes as well. Thanks very much
Glad to hear that my videos are helping. Keep at it. Yes, I would like to do some more videos like this. Always a battle between intent and time…
Really nice arrangement and so well played...Jack....Jack Baker
Thanks Jack!
Another good one. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Charles!
Thanks, Jack. I can add this to your Cluck Blue Hen!
Thanks Mike. Enjoy!
Thank you Jack.🙏
You’re most welcome, Lis.
I really like the sawmill capoed up! Imma have to try that! Thanks for sharing
Thanks Stephen!
Nice One Jack. Nice. STP
Thanks STP!
Lovely tune, with the tab I must be able to figure out how to play this
Thanks Dutch. Hope you enjoy playing the tune!
Lovely
Thanks Rev!
Great to see up picking as well as the ubiquitous clawhammer / down picking that is everywhere. I started playing banjo about 65 years ago using Pete Seeger’s little red book. The first playing lesson was the ‘Basic Strum’ which came easily to me and I used it playing with a high school and college folk group and hootenanny open mics . Even😮 as I extended my capabilities with Frailing / Clawhammer styles and eventually Scruggs style as I ventured into bluegrass, I kept coming back to up picking to do Irish and traditional music. Thanks for keeping the ‘ Basic Strum / Up Picking alive
Thanks Bill. You have ten years on me, but same here-started with the red book, then Art Rosenbaum’s book. I was up-picking and two fingering in the early days before I went down the clawhammer and string band rabbit hole for decades. Finally came back to those early styles in the past few years.
printed off the tab and am learning it, thanks Jack!
Enjoy, my friend!
Nicely done!
Thanks Dale!
Thanks for posting. Gotta learn this one. Simple, beautiful in Two Finger.
Thank you too! I never tried Kitchen Girl in 2F style until recently. Like so many Henry Reed tunes, it works really well. And you’re right--simplicity in technique is the key.
Lovely Timing Jack. Respect. STP
Many thanks!
Thanks for this one, Jack. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done, Jack!
Thanks Mike!
TH-cam can be strange. We’re with you! Hope this gets sorted out.
Indeed. But happy to say that TH-cam tech support jumped right on the mess and restored everything quickly. They totally owned their screw up, which is a rare surprise these days.
Thanks, Jack. Another good one!
Thanks again!
Wow thats an amazing tune Jack, thanks for all you do for us learners! Are you using strum machine for back up?
Thanks Tony! I’ve been using my tabbing program, TablEdit to create backing tracks. I’ve considered switching to Strum Machine because the sound fonts are better, but TablEdit is convenient and bought and paid for.
Thanks for the info Jack, sounds great!
One of the greatest, most moral men in an era of insanity and evil. May he rest in peace.
Got that right.
@@banjojack "His zeal in the cause of freedom was infinitely superior to mine. Mine was a taper light, his was the burning sun. Mine was bounded by time, his stretched away to the silent shores of eternity. I could speak for the slave. John Brown could fight for the slave. I could live for the slave. John Brown could die for the slave." -Frederick Douglass
I like a calf skin more than a goat skin. It seems to have better tone for me. That said my playing out banjo has an elite head on it. I think it’s the same as a renaissance head. I don’t like the fiber skin heads at all. They sound muted and get ugly to look at after playing on them for awhile.
I’m with you. Not a big fan of fiberskyn heads. I’ve had goat skins that were great, and some that were not. I had a calf skin on my Whyte Laydie that I got from Stern Tanning. It was sanded to a uniform thickness and was amazing. I have a calfskin on my 1920s Vega tubaphone now, and it’s quite good, but not like that skin from Stern.
Beautiful tune sir. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Guido!
Love your content,! youve been a big inspiration to me since starting to learn banjo
Thank you Patrick. Keep on pickin’!
Super awesome! Cant wait to start practicing this
Have fun!
Jack, this is lovely! Do you have a video lesson on the basics of up picking? Thanks so much for all you wonderful videos!!
Thank you Karen! Actually, i was thinking of putting together a video on basic up-picking this week, since you are not the only one to ask. Stay tuned!
🙂
Thanks Stevie!
👍👍
Thanks again!
Dude this is awesome. Do you where I can find the tab for this?
Thanks! I am going to post a full-length video of this tune and I will have a link to the tab in that content. Probably today or tomorrow. So keep an eye out.
My full-length video is uploaded and published. If you go to the video description, you will see. link to the tab. Have fun! th-cam.com/video/4KgIuimRB7g/w-d-xo.html
Excellent!
Thanks. Glad you liked it!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Excellent. Many Thanks. STP.
Glad you enjoyed it, STP!
Great job like that up picking! Id like to see a demo of how you achieve that.
Thanks Jim! I can throw together a demo video of the basic up-picking pattern, probably in the coming week. Even though is superficially seems similar to clawhammer, there are essential differences.
love this we are lerning this in music
Thanks Rachel. The Fox is such a great traditional song that goes waaaaay back.
