    My way of running an organisation, and my leadership style if being down to earth (DTE), honesty, transparency.
    It's about having a 360-degree interview, we interview the candidate, and the candidate interviews us, vice-versa.

    Thank you for your sharing experience. What if the potential board members are having their own organizations, but still apply for my cause. Do you hire them? What will you ask them in the interview about this case?

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! It is definitely possible for a board member to also be a board member of another organization too! It may be a lot of time commitment for that person, but if that's okay with them, it's fine! I would ask them if they foresee any conflicts of interest related to serving on two boards, and confirm they feel they can commit the time to both - serving on a board is a lot of work!

      @@AmberMelanieSmith thanks for your answer. Last time, I interviewed them, they said that they worked in another organization as board members for less than 6 months. And it is likely that they would repeat the pattern to get a certificate then leave. In term of how long board members stay, do you think it’s acceptable?

    I have a question regarding audits, who requests audits? I didn’t find a topic for treasures (board member).

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Internally, the board is responsible for financial oversight and can request an audit be done (though there is usually significant cost to hiring an auditor). Externally, the IRS can require your nonprofit to do an audit. Others like funders can ask for an audit, but don't have the legal authority to force the nonprofit to get one.

    Very helpful video, just wanted to say that mine is a newly registered not for profit, my wife and i are operating it with few friends, I had recruited a director but since the expectations were not made clear he resigned and left. I don't want to make this mistakes. I also don't have money so if I hire board members how do I pay salary to them this is my concern so if you can share your comment on this it will be highly helpful... Regards

      Hey there! I'm not sure what the NGO regulations are in India; I know in the USA, board members are generally unpaid volunteers, but nonprofits can hire staff and pay them separately. To recruit board members, write down your values and what roles you are looking for people to play in detail, then see who in your network might share your passion for your cause!

    Would the "Board" be the Same as "Team Leaders" ?

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know when I say "team leaders" I might be referring to board or staff or even volunteers - whomever holds the leadership positions in your organization.

    I am from Nepal. I am founder of NGO name as Dreams Nepal. How can i setup my board member for very first time. Help me

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! I am not sure what the legal requirements are to start an NGO in Nepal, but I would say to first assess what types of skills you need on your board to make your organization successful in the first 1-2 years - then seek out people in your networks with those skills and invite them to apply!

      @@AmberMelanieSmith I totally think so! I worked with a non profit that built a million dollar building to provide ESL classes, basic computer and finance classes, an after school program for about a classroom of kids, and restoration... Honestly it was a life saver doing the 3 hundred year floods that happened back to back!
      Outside of that there wasn't much offered. It seemed a waste to me they didn't have their receptionist positions as removing doors that helped a new person every few months instead of providing one or two people a dead end job paying $9 part time (job description literally said read the director's mind (who was making $30 an hour and believed the community was responsible for their lack of funds)
      Yeah it could easily sound petty BUT for an organization based on breaking generational poverty... They raise WAY more funds than they use to change the community. It's just so disingenuous.
      That one millionaire in Florida that adopted a neighborhood has the blue print of how to make generational changes. I'd love to be a part of something that makes that kind of deep change!
      I'm learning but don't really know where to start
