Perhaps to check the map for an optimal escape route (then again you can use your eyes for that since there's only one way out that doesn't involve death)

3rd person in horror games does make it less terrifying in my opinion. I’m actually excited to play Resident Evil 8 now that it has 3rd person mode as a option. I’m usually too scared to play horror games in 1st person mode.
