A very interesting video. A friend of mine (intoxicated) once spent a night in the same cell in Giffnock Police Station that once held Rudolph Hess. It opened in 1915 and the same building is still a police station today.
Thanks. Good to see it's still a police station; we've lost so many. Part of me thinks this constant drive towards centralisation, whether with police stations or hospitals, is not the way to go. I think Hess was temporarily held at Govan Police Station too.
Thank you for the video. It was really very informational. Loved it. I'm going to share it with Tony Broonford of Edinburgh. Perhaps he can interview you on his channel and you can talk about your different assignments. Again, loved the research and time you put into this.
Many thanks to share this interesting video. My husband and I went to Inveraray jail only this year and stayed in the jail apartment what a wonderfully experience and interesting history about how it was , and the apartment was beautiful done as a self catering b&b witch we started in for 3 nights.
Great video ed. My dad had the dubious honour of being born in a jail🙀, his father was a warder and his mum gave birth in the prison hospital in saughton
Brilliant video, Ed. Really fascinating. Cannot get enough of prison history; Inveraray Jail is somewhere I could visit over and over. It's especially great as they accept dogs. Thanks again, Ed.
Yes, those jail visitor attractions are very good, although at times they can feel a tad intimidating, depending on the enthusiasm of the staff actor, but that's all part of the fun and the experience.
Tremendous episode! I thought you might be inclined to song on this one. Love this street ditty about Duke St Gaol. "There is a happy land, doon Duke Street gaol Where a' the prisoners stand, tied tae a nail. Ham an' eggs they never see, dirty watter fur yer tea; There they live in misery - God save the Queen!" 🎶 Chatted with desk Sergeant Eddie McMillan for ages when the Edinburgh Princes St station (which doubled as a small museum) was alive, whilst researching baby farmer Jessie King, hung at Calton gaol in 1889. (No drugs were involved🤣) Jessie's ghost still haunts the gaol site, now council offices. Thank you so much! ❤️
@@EdExploresScotlandWhen I next head north, I will certainly add to the list! Shame Edinburgh Old Town nick closed. I remember now. It was actually next to the Fringe Festival booking office on the Mile. Not Princes St. There was also a fire fighters museum in Lauriston Place that closed down. Another sad loss. Economics, I guess? (Fire fighting? Conflagrations & James Braidwood? Maybe another episode?) 🚒
Cracking video, Ed. Only discovered the remnants of the Duke Street Jail walls in the past year or so, and the bullet holes from the foiled escape! Incidentally, I got a copy of Bad Whisky for Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope you're well, keep up the great videos!
Many thanks. I hadn't realised 'Bad Whisky' was still available. I used to pass the wall on the High Street regularly but could never see what might be bullet-holes. It's a big part of the prison's past.
Hi Ed, as usual a very comprehensive video. I've been in the old bar'el, only making a delivery with my lorry though. The space between the outer and inner gates was too short for a forty foot trailer so the guards had to make sure there were no inmates nearby when the two gates were open. I see there were quite a few Campbell's and a couple of Black's in the list of ner do wells you read out. My Mother was a Campbell and my Faither was a Black.
Great and informative video. Enjoyed it.usch have done a huge amount of research. It's really interesting to see how different things were for last generations. Funny thing is I am not much of a history buff but definitely interested in how different the landscape has changed in Scotland. As I know these places as they are today. (Most of them) not that I have been in prison though :) P.s prison time for the theft of a turnip? Omg times have really changed that would never happen now :)
I suppose the story about Scottish prisons is the same as that in other areas of society, hospitals for example, in that we're always striving for more efficiency by closing smaller units and replacing them with bigger 'super' units. I'm not convinced that the idea actually works.
@Ed Explores Scotland I agree, things like private jails to do not, the two private jails in Scotland are becoming public run I the next 3 years as it is unsafe
Thanks Tommy. Sometimes comments are automatically sent to my 'Held For Review' section, but I always read and check them, and if okay, publish them. I don't recall your name or avatar. That said, as a cantankerous old codger I sometimes delete comments that just annoy me. Take care mate.

I'm loving your history videos. Thanks for the vast amount of work you do to produce these. I'm grateful for your dedication and passion.
Thank you. I love making them.
Very interesting subject not often thought of. Great job. I enjoyed it.

@@EdExploresScotland Very much so. My Westie took an instant dislike to one of the actors at Inveraray Jail. Bit too loud!
Brilliant and interesting

Thanks for that. I didn't know Edinburgh once had a small police museum. Glasgow has one. Worth a visit.

another great video :)
Cheers. 👍
Another fantastic episode Ed.
Many thanks.
This a very good insight into prisons ( Scottish) very well done video thankyou .
The reason prison officers are called screws is due to the screw the officers could turn in order to make it harder to turn the hand crank
Great vid, pity about the weather......gets you down after a while.
ATB
Cheers. Weather's dire. Hopefully at some point this year the sun will emerge.
Well done Ed
Interesting video Ed, there is a 16th century jail located in the Marches shopping centre in Stirling called The Bastion and Thieves’ Pot
I passed that feature in the shopping centre and did consider using it to start and end the video, but for some reason decided against it.
