This was very helpful. I am planning my first trip to Japan with some friends and we were thinking of staying 5 nights in Tokyo and 5 in Kyoto. The main thing, I took from your advice, is that we need to extend the trip to two weeks and go for three or four destinations. But you brought up lots of other helpful details that I would not have thought about.

If you can extend, I definitely would! If not, you could do a day trip to Nara from Kyoto and another day trip to Osaka - though you have to spend the evening there too as it looks best at night! Enjoy your trip 😃

Can you just booked a reserve seat right when you get there at the station? Can you do it at the ticket machine or you need to go inside and talk to a person?

Yes you can book a reserved seat in advance, either at the ticket machine or a person. We found the foreign tourist desk to be the easiest and fastest option!
