    This video is only going to lead to more confusion and a lot of returned mixers. You need to state very clearly if the USB does in/out on all channels or not. The Tascam Model series and the Zoom Live series do not leave any questions.

    • @thelastdruidofscotland
      @thelastdruidofscotland 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i would guess it has an interface mode, rather than channel selection like the tascam, so when its in interface mode ( like rolands mx1) it will stream the daw channels per strip, and return 2 stereo groups, thats what I am thinking, I await the reviews, iv got cash burning, and would like to see these questions about the new onyx mixers answered

    • @bryantwalley
      @bryantwalley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thelastdruidofscotland guessing about tech specs is not a good thing. If it is only interface mode, its useless. If it does not live mix and record/playback all tracks at the same time it has no purpose as there are devices out now that can do it and do it very well. This is what every single person looking at this device is wanting to do and there is only a single line of marketing blurb on the Mackie site. No manual, no technical documentation, no mention in any videos. Very big oversight unless it actually does not work as we are hoping.

      @@bryantwalley Which devices can do this? I ordered the Zoom L-12 (after Mackie failed to answer my question about recording separate tracks) but can the Zoom play back what I recorded whilst I record a new instrument part?

    • @bryantwalley
      @bryantwalley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@spacep0d yes. The L-12 will do fine. The Tascam Model 12 is also a great option.

      @@bryantwalley Thanks Bryant. I like that the L-12 has compression, so that made all the difference. I also need to monitor vocals with reverb even if it records dry. I'd be keen to see a video of someone actually doing this...recording instruments one at a time with playback. Thanks!

    Thanks for the video! Very informative. I’ve always loved Mackie mixers. This is awesome to see them still around. I’m in the process of looking for and interface with more channels so I’m checking every company out. The one thing that would’ve sold me on this mixer (other than one of my favorite producers Mike SHINODA backing it) that it was also a control surface. I hate mixing with a mouse. So maybe in the future you can integrate that in.

  • @spacep0d
    @spacep0d 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can this mixer record *separate* audio tracks for use in a DAW, such as guitars, vox, drums, etc.?
    Can I monitor reverb on vocals but record dry vox?
    Can I play back what I recorded (say, guitar and vox) in order to record a new part individually such as electric bass or drums?
    It's very difficult to find clear answers to these questions. I'm under the impression that the Mackie Onyx can only record a stereo track, but not individual tracks. If it's possible to record individual tracks then this point should be driven home better.
    Also, it would be nice to have compression per channel, especially for vocals.
    Thanks!

    • @mgmg116
      @mgmg116 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it will send individual channels to your DAW.
      Yes, you can monitor with reverb without printing it, it all depends on how you're routing your mixes.
      Yes, you can play back your recordings, but this would be done with a transport control or your DAW. The Onyx 24 is only a mixer, not a sequencer.

    Stereo sd card recording. Seriously. That’s so last gen. I’m quite disappointed in this one aspect because otherwise this product is very interesting. Looks like it’s still either tascam model 12 or zoom livetrack… unless mackie updates this soon.

    Unfortunately, I must say that with the sliders set to 50% of the main and channel 1 and the preamp knobs to 50% there is significant noise. When a condenser microphone is connected, the recording is not studio-like, the noise is significant. I tried different settings but it's not good. I don't know if there's anything I can do. ONYX 12

    I'm confused about the USB audio.
    When i first reD about this a few months ago, I thought it said it would do more extensive multi track straight to DAW.
    I.e, the 12 would do 12, the 16 would do 16, etc
    But reading it now, this only does 4 channels straight to daw and i feel like I'm crazy

      In the past when companies gloss past a major feature its because something is not what it seems. Every single person that comes to this video wants to know if all the channels are USB in/out or not. If it were I would for certain think they would have mentioned it. Right now looks like the Tascam Model 12 and 16 are the go to’s.

    • @NateHorn
      @NateHorn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi guys - they mention in the video that USB is multitrack - multitrack is when you have access to the invidual channels on the mixer, like an interface. It's a key feature of the mixer also listed on the website, i.e. for the 8-Channel "High-resolution 8x4 96kHz / 24-bit multi-track recording to Mac/PC via USB". It would be a lot cheaper if it wasn't! Perhaps the '4 channels' you're seeing are the outputs, as they'll all be 8/4, 12/4, 16/4

      @synthpulse1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 channel USB audio RETURN from Mac/PC back to mixer channels. VERY handy to have.

    • @bryantwalley
      @bryantwalley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@NateHorn We know what multitracking is. That's why we are here. The problem is that it is not specific as to what is being multi tracked. in your examples below you list things like 8/4 , 12/4, etc.. That would mean it would be limited to 8 out and 4 back, or 12 out and 4 back. That is gonna be a hard sell. Probably why they dont mention specifically what it will do. The Tascam models I mentioned above send and return all the channels and add an additional stereo return for the master. It is also well documented. The Zoom line also states very clearly what it is designed to do. If they want to compete in this class they need to go all in.

I know your rack based mixer only works with windows 10 but the spec sheet for the onyx doesn't specify system requirements, nor does it specify how many recording channels it has. You COULD use the channel EQs, and then feed that into the FX if you wanted to.
      Also, the input section is half-normalled so if you plug a TS/TRS cable only to the first click, the chanel inserts become direct outs and allow you to patch out to any outboard gear you'd like to use

      YES....WHY IS THIS INFORMATION HIDDEN FROM US? It's like Mackie isn't stating clearly this limitation. This is a complete dealbreaker for me. Otherwise I'd love to buy Mackie.
      1. I need separate tracks. That means when I bring them into my DAW (Studio One), each track is separate so I can finish the song there. Guitar, vocals, bass, drums, synth...all separate.
      2. We need compression on at least some tracks. I hate singing without compression. Also need to be able to monitor with reverb but record dry.
      3. I need to be able to play back what I recorded whilst recording new instrument parts, e.g., bass, then drums, etc.

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markmeloney2643 Yes, it's just a stereo mix. The fact that they're glossing over this is very telling, and highly frustrating. The Tascam Model 12 and Zoom L-12 can both record *separate* tracks, and the Zoom has compression.
      I would rather buy Mackie but they're being annoyingly coy about this functionality or lack thereof. Also, I need to be able monitor a previous recording whilst recording a new part. Looks like they haven't developed this very much yet.

    1:35 What the heck? Mackie used to be great before they were absorbed by LOUD. This mixer is flimsy. The pots are on plastic poles and feel like they're going to break off, and the overall feel is cheap, and this ad boasting about the included software at 2:19 "Up to a $300 value" or "Up to a $200 value." says it all. Feels like they're selling knives sets on late night TV. "Act now and we'll throw in ..." "Operators are standing by"
