  • Today we are going to analyze and see the great Spanish ceramist Alberto Bustos, born in Valladolid, work with ceramics.
Throughout much of human history, arguably the most abundant artifact has been pottery.
Some researchers discovered in southern China what they say are the oldest remains of ceramics that have been found so far. The archaeologists responsible for that finding determined that these fragments of a large bowl are from 20,000 years ago.
Alberto, like many of the Artists that we have always invited to the ARTECONTODO channel, has a self-taught artistic training. He began painting not only pictures, he painted clothes, shoes, everything. Little by little he discovered that the two dimensions did not fill him completely.
When he already made the decision to work the volume, he thought that the easiest thing would be to model Clay, and since then he has worked for almost 25 years.
After more than 25 years of working with clay, he continues to learn since his techniques and possibilities are infinite. He also worked with other materials, such as wood, bronze, etc. But ceramics is one of the most complete artistic disciplines and diverse.
Valladolid is a city that has very little nature as you can see, and that is why Alberto always felt there as if he lacked oxygen, light and that is why he ends up settling in a small town near the sea: in Belvei, Tarragona in the Province of Catalonia, in an environment with much more nature, which is what most influences his ideal state of mind to create his works with complete freedom. Precisely the phrase that he uses the most in his conferences around the world is that: Libertad is his most refined technique.
If any of you work with ceramics, he knows that because of its complexity, it requires a lot of technique and that means that many of the people who work with it,
have certain fears that limit his freedom of creation and that is why perhaps his works in the end do not reflect his own stamp.
That is perhaps why Alberto's work is so impressive since, as he is self-taught, he always feels free to do what he wants, without stress, without pressure, without any fear. Just let it flow, that's why his creative process usually starts at night and I say that because he says that while he tries to sleep he creates a number of imaginary sketches that start from his head, but run through his heart, and the next day that idea reaches the arms and touches the clay, all his feelings begin to flow and he shapes them on the clay or porcelain because he also works with porcelain.
Enjoy here the stone texture technique in which he uses cookie pieces that are then incorporated into the raw clay sheet to later start creating a whole number of textures and apply pigments to the wet clay to facilitate later firing. only.
But perhaps the Technique that most identifies him is what he has called the Throwing Technique in which he begins by taking small pieces of clay and hitting them repeatedly on a plate until he achieves the desired size and shape. With the same technique, he models plates, square filaments, rectangular planes of everything that comes to mind. Those are some filaments that try to stand out after the cube that he creates like a plant that develops and has to grow in the asphalt itself.
The clays must have a precise point of hardness, they cannot be too soft or too hard, obtaining very particular shapes that recall that vegetal physiognomy.
He calls them filaments in general, he calls these works of filaments Naturareza. He is always trying to ensure that all these sculptures transmit movement and fragility.
Alberto has not had the pleasure of being in Colombia dictating one of his beautiful workshops, but he wants all the potters who are watching this video, when they are creating, to take their level of demand to the maximum. It is not possible or if you want to, you should not make ceramics without any passion. Many many of his ceramic works he takes to the limit of what that clay can withstand.
It is that today with the immediacy of the internet we have to be very demanding. We must absolutely take care of all the details and in the end all that is a design, things with design you may like more or less but they attract more attention.
