Astonish ridden by Aslam Kader the Indian Derby 1992

Astonish raced in the Pink and White Quarters of Mr. J P Goenka. It seemed to be a classic case of TEN YEARS AFTER. Back in 1982, the same colours had been carried to victory by Almanac, who went on to complete the Indian Triple Crown. Astonish was to follow the same hoofmarks.
Astonish's win was an extremely hard-fought one. He turned for home on the outside of a filly named La Bonne Vie being ridden by English Champion jockey Willie Carson. Never Say Die-Willie is what he has often been called in England and on that first Sunday of February the crowd was on its feet as Astonish and La Bonne Vie. Aslam Kader and Willie Carson staged an epic battle over the last 400 metres of that long Mahalami Derby straight. They flashed past the wire locked together in mortal combat and the Camera finally gave the verdict to Astonish by a Short head. La Bonne Vie had the Mallya colours which had once again finished a close and courageous second.
Astonish who was bred at the Poonawalla Stud went on to gain greater laurels and he became the first ever Indian bred to be exported to Hong Kong where he came out and won a sensational race on debut in their highest class. The Indian connection it seemed was to remain with him even in Hong Kong where he was trained by Lawrence Fownes who had once been the Champion Trainer in Calcutta.

I banked on Astonish and I was able to solve jackpot pool. A great horse which has won races in Hong Kong and also Big Salute to Great Jockey Aslam Khader who won many races on great horse Astonish.
