The Black Hat Buschcraft channel walked up on the Eastern Box Turtle Survival School and politely introduced himself and went about his business telling others about the waters of life. Great beginning, great story and instruction, keep up the good work my friend.
Great video as always - very detailed and informative. I have a lot of water systems, ranging from a Steri-Pen, Sawyer, Frontier, Life Straw, Sweet Water pump and I really like the Grayl. It's become my primary water purification / filtration tool because of the pathogen and virus removal. Fast, efficient - a filter and drinking utensil in one. I've used it in the US, Australia and last year as the primary water source on a fly in fishing trip to Alaska last year - drank from the river every day....A great unit. I have the standard unit - and wish they would have had the large 24 oz unit like yours....Great investment, outstanding video. Thanks for your work.
I used the Grayl Geopress on a 4 day backpack trip last summer in an area of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness in Oregon with lots of water sources. It performed well! Really sold on the ease of use and the technology.
Great video as always Matt! Awesome that you put some notes describing how increased elevation (Lower Atmospheric Pressure) affects the boiling point of water! I believe it is still a weak subject for many people, so the more awareness, the better off the community will be!
Thank you so much Jonathan. I appreciate that brother. I agree, It isn't a super complicated process however, it is a critical skills that a little knowledge and practice goes a long way with. Take care my friend.
"Water is the liquid of life, you should never take it for granted." Very wise words, I will be saying it that way to my kiddos from now on. Thank you for the tip on prefiltering for the Grayl. Those replaceable filters work for quite a while, but if that is the only one you have each press is a lot more expensive.
Thank you so much for the kind words my friend! I am glad to know my grandfather's words and being passed on to another generation!🙂 He was an amazing man indeed! I agree wholeheartedly on the filters. It is good to conserve them as much as possible. It is always good to have a spare or two on the shelf as well. Take care my friend!
I have a cousin who is quite talented and could make one of the prefilter bags; my mother may very well have some the identical cloth you have to make a prefilter like what you've showcased here in this video. A budding cottage industry in the making lol
Matt it looked to me like you would have some dirty water on the outside of the bag when you put the bag in the stream and then hung it on the tripod. Very nice video by the way.
Hello Matt! Thanks for another great and practical video. Water truly is the "water of life", your Grandpa' was right!. I really like your treatise on boiling water. As you stated water boils at 212 deg. F. at sea level, but at only 152 deg F. at 30,000 feet (Mt Everest). an average drop of 1 deg.F. every 500 feet. Most common bacteria (other than a very few exotic ones who live near underwater volcanoes) cannot survive above 165 deg. F. Thusly water brought to a rolling boil at any altitude below 25,000 feet would be rendered safe to drink. In practicality that means that unless you are a technical mountain climber and above 25,000 feet, the moment your water reaches a rolling boil all bacteria are dead and your water is safe to drink (let it cool first of course). The boil it longer at altitude is a myth, once it reaches the boiling point at what ever altitude you happen to be, it would have reached its (terminal temp.) and will not gain temp regardless of how long you boil it. sorry for the long winded rant, science, it's my "thang".
NO, that is awesome! I like these details as well 🙂 While these details aren't essential to disinfect water, I think it is good to understand how things work in reality. That way you don't get thrown off by the rumors and myths out there. Your comment and the facts given are spot on with everything I have researched as well. Thank for your time and interest and for sharing good info as well my friend! Take care.
I’ve also read (don’t know if it’s true) that we in North American don’t need to worry about viruses in water from the wild. That’s why commonly the filters don’t speak to viruses, only bacteria, Protozoa, et al.
Thank you so much my friend! They are a multi-use item for sure and it really does makes sense to use them and preserve those expensive filters for as long as possible. It's always good to conserve resources of any kind. Thank you for your time and interest my friend!
You mentioned a brown bag where can I pick one up in your description it did not say anything about where I can find one could you please let me know where I could get one of those Thank you very much and I do love watching you on the TH-cam I've learned quite a bit it's very excellent again thank you very much
Thank you so much Thomas! I really appreciate that and I am glad you enjoy the videos! You can definitely get a Brown Bag, look in the links below this video in the description box. Click on the first link for Self Reliance Outfitters. Type "Brown Bag" in the search bar up top and it will pop right up. Let me know what you think. They are the BEST quality pre filters available that I know of. Thanks again Thomas!
Once it become difficult to press, you know the filter is getting close to it's end. I always keep a spare on hand in my gear back home so I can switch out before a trip if I am worried about it getting used up. You can definitely feel it when it is getting close.
Thanks for the video and knowledge. I'm not sure what kind of filter your using is made up. Just a thought, Chlorine from tap water can damage or brake down some Filters Membrane causing it to fail to work properly. If I use use tap water I will fill up a bucket and let it set for a few days till the chlorine dissipates. letting it set outside in the sun will dissipate the chlorine quicker.
Good stuff as usual. When you go to collect the first water for filtration from the bag you should use the first bit to rinse out the bottom of the container before you start the filtering process. Make sure the container is clear as possible from debris. What filter will filter out possible chemical contamination also?
The Grayl paperwork mentions that it will filter chemical such as Chlorine, Benzene, Chloroform, and micro plastics. It will also filter Heavy Metals such as Lead, Arsenic, and Chromium. Of course, all of these in reasonable amounts. Thanks so much for tuning in Shawn!
@@blackhatbushcraft Thank you. I watched your top 5 video today. Think I am gonna get one of the Grayls and that stove. I have a folding military heat tab stove from the 80s. Not quite the same . But it did heat up plenty of meals.
Good video presentation. I don’t believe you missed anything. I especially liked that you mentioned conservation of resources. I’ve heard of a portable three stage filter (activated charcoal) that removes chemicals. Do you know if this filter and would you recommend one like that? Have you ever used a “gypsy well” as a pre-filter?
Thank you so much for your kind words :) Is a gypsy well the same as a coyote well? If so, I have done that on many occasions. I think it may be a great video topic as well to cover.
Black Hat Bushcraft Thank you for responding. I believe the gypsy and coyote wells are the same; a hole dug about a foot (30 cm) from an above ground water source that is allowed to fill with “filtered”water that is then boiled as an added measure. All dimensions (distance away from source, diameter of hole and depth of hole) are of course dependent on personal preference but should also take into consideration local conditions. Personally my go to primary filter most of the time is a Sawyer filter due to life span, adaptability and portability but I have used other methods.
@@viewsandreviews180 Yes indeed the same. I thought so. I hope to do a video very soon on that exact subject. I will do a few on water disinfection to round this out :) Thanks again my friend.
Another fantastic video, can I ask what is pathfinders. Great tip of pre-filtering water first to conserve the life span of whichever implement someone uses. Review coming on the knife you were using, looking forward to that, if it's anything like the last knife review were in for a treat. I like the new ferro rod, I like the idea of emergency tinder. Thanks very much.
Thank you so much for your kind words my friend! I hope to get that video of the Kephart XL done in the next couple of weeks. I am glad you enjoyed the previous one as well 🙂 The Pathfinder School is a wilderness Self Reliance School based in Jackson, Ohio. It is owned by Dave Canterbury and his family. I am a certified instructor for the school and teach there several times per year as I am able to travel there. There are classes from basic survival to advanced level and other classes to include wilderness first aid, blacksmithing, bushcraft 101 and even youth training, many events offered each year free of charge to help share knowledge with youth. Let me know if you need more info. Thanks again for your support my friend!
Great video friend🙂 i would like one of those brown bags. I always carry water for a night and have a filter for a backup. We’ve had a lot of rain and heat here as well. There are chanterelles everywhere. Have you seen any there? Oh I got my jr woodsman. I love it! Just ordered a beeswax dangler sheath from Randy for it🤩
I haven't seen any Chanterelles myself but I am a little jealous! 😀 I did get to eat some hen of the woods cooked in bacon grease the other weekend and that was very good. Congratulations on the Jr. Woodsman! I hope it serves you well and the beeswax sheath Randy makes is as tops no doubt. You will have an amazing setup for sure. Take care my friend!
The only way I know to desalinate water is through distillation. The Grayl will not work for salt water. Most other things though, it will get the job done. Thank you for tuning in!
Great video. The way you load your fire box is pure genius!!! I tried it in my Solo Campfire stove and it worked great. Burns hot and long. Thank you for the tip. If you wanted to check out my stove go to solostove.com
I believe you got it almost right... but the order was wrong. FIRST, boil the water, THEN filter it. Think about carrying a dirty filter vs. carrying a dead contaminant filled filter. de KQ2E

Is there a source for a molle compatible pouch for the Grayl?
Turtle be like “hello human kindly put me down and walk away please.”
