    For people complaining about another one, they spent $400 million just for the rights, so of course they were going to make another one! Mike Flanagan is the best person for the job

      They can make the story center on the other parents, and maybe find a way to save their daughter from damnation in hell. The problem is the parents are not sympathetic enough and the story even for myself is ridiculous. Maybe it works for fan films.

      @@blaizeadisek4376I went in expecting nothing and hoping for something that would surprise me.
      It did. ...With unbridled idiocy.
      It took the combined ingredients of ineptitude, complacency, and complete disengagement for this farce to have reached the full apex of its failure.

      @blaizeadisek4376 Jason Blum and David Gordon-Green played Believer too safe.
      They need to take risks and make it actually horrifying.
      It needs to be something that makes you squirm in your seat.

      @@WeWatchedAMovieIt is a Hollywood guarantee. If a movie, regardless of how it ends, plays out, whatever. If it makes a lot of money, they WILL make a sequel. Somehow they'll shoehorn a story to continue it, or they'll do a "Prequel". Somehow they'll get their way. What's sad is these people who push these ideas, force them onto directors, 99 times out a 100 have absolutely NO IDEA what their doing or what fans want. The Exorcist is a straight up story of demonic possession. The story was straight up in your face and the fact that Blatty used an innocent looking girl, had her spew obscenities like no other, gave it such a visceral and fierce look. But the Crucifix scene sent people screaming. This was a visually sickening story that can't ever get the same reaction. This was "lightning in a bottle."

  • @rhettdavison
    @rhettdavison 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Even “The Exorcist III” wasn’t supposed to be a sequel to the original. William Peter Blatty wrote “The Legion” as a standalone story set in the same universe not involving anything other than the Kinderman character.
    “The Exorcist” is a one and done. The title character died, so there was never a reason to continue it.

      Could have said that when they were making part 3 as well, though. The original is so good, and we already had one shit show of a sequel, why try a third? Here we are, though, with Exorcist III having a lot of fans and looked upon as a good addition to the franchise. Hopefully this new one from Flannagan will do the same. If not, just add it to the pile of not so good sequels and ignore it.

    I think the true horror of Exorcist Believer was Leslie Odom not only refusing to take in his trash and recycling cans, but he clearly cut in line dropping his kid off at school AND parked in the bus zone. Truly the face of evil. As for the rest of the movie, I've never seen a film in my life deliberately tank itself halfway through as bad as this one did. It's DGG so it was never going to be a masterpiece, but my God what a nosedive. I didn't expect much after his Halloween trilogy but man what a stinker. Maybe Flanagan can bring home the gold.

    Linda Blair is IMO what seperates The Exorcist as an IP from all those other rip-offs. That and the theme music. I think both are necessary.

    • @EdsterIII
      @EdsterIII 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's amazing how music so simplistic can evoke so much more emotion than drawn out crap. Tubular Bells from that movie have such a creepy and horrific sound and feel. Jaws was similar. Du Dunn Du Dunn. Two notes progressing into a dark, faster, and ominous sound. Music can truly MAKE a movie.

    Just remember folks, they followed up The Exorcist with a "radical departure" in Exorcist 2: The Heretic. A VERY DIFFERENT take on posession and it being "radically different" was its main problem.

    If you look backwards to when the Original Exorcist came out. People were angry, the war, riots, anger, viciousness was just about everywhere. Then this book about this innocent young girl comes out. The movie follows. This was truly the old adage, "Lightning in a Bottle." They had the right time, the right story for that time, however what Blatty did with the movie itself was something we'll never see again. The special effects were basically great make-up, practical effects, and viscerally stunning, brutal, and at times sickeningly vile scenes. But the 🎼🎶🎵🎶🎵 music, Tubular Bells, those little chimes added a level of eerieness and creepiness that made this movie a perfect storm on every level. Add to that, word of mouth from moviegoers who saw it, as well as those people who protested it and in the end gave it so much free publicity it became more popular, and more tickets were sold. Every aspect of this movie achieved something that won't happen again. It turned a complete planet upside down, and it all happened at the right time.

    It's a much more secular world here in 2024 than in 1973. A good sequel will have respect Catholicism and "the patriarchy" (unlike what Chris did in Believer) and take it seriously, like a true "Believer" would, with no ironic detachment. There should be an Exorcist (not a squad of diverse beliefs), solving a Catholic problem in a Catholic way. A studio making a sequel would have to be comfortable with that. Probably difficult considering the politics in modern Hollywood. If the studio can't handle that, it won't matter who the director is.

    I always found it fascinating how William Friedkin was not a horror director but someone who just passed through horror when making Exorcist. Mike Flanagan is a horror writer and director but human drama is the most important thing he writes. I think when you take into account Flanagan's shows like Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass you can see how he would be a good choice for The Exorcist. He also respected The Shining with Doctor Sleep.

    • @capitalcitygoofball1987
      @capitalcitygoofball1987 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I was floored when I found out William Peter Blatty was primarily a comedy writer prior to penning the Exorcist. It's why six years ago I defended DGG and Danny McBride coming in to do Halloween. I said "hey, let's not put these guys in a box. They clearly know the franchise" and then five years later I thought maybe horror isn't really their strong suit.

    I understand sort of rolling your eyes and scoffing at the idea of these sequels or reboots to classic films, but I've always seen them as just being harmless. If they're good, great. Another movie to add to the collection. If not, you just ignore them. No matter how bad these movies might be, I just don't think they can tarnish the originals. If you let them, sure, but that's really more on you then anyone else. Even as awful as modern day Hollywood is, I'll still keep my fingers crossed Flannagan can knock it out of the park and make a good movie.

    Exorcist Believer, Exorcist Deceiver, then Exorcist Revealer (maybe?) had the potential to make or continue a classic franchise, but instead they did what so many other legendary morons have done. They mocked original aspects of the original movie, turned the legacy character into a joke, and they once again pushed some social agenda or personal ideal. Now once again this classic horror franchise sits with another lame duck sequel.
