When plowing with the excavator, curl up your bucket and place it on the side of your blade so the snow doesn't fall off to one side. That way you don't have to make so many extra passes cleaning up.

it's just a reminder to keep some stuff in the truck like a couple of pairs of spare socks and jeans and an old pair of gum boots a warm jersey and jacket and maybe a sleeping bag - and some long life food in a dog proof container and some water - it's not only for you it encase you have any of your kids with you in the next snow - Cedar needs to do the same in her vehicle - you are a long way out of town to have people drive past to help - take care - be prepared for anything

I drove 80 miles round trip to work for 25 year's in Minnesota. As I drove winter beaters all year long and I worked from 6P.M. To 3:30 A.M. I had to rely on myself as for most of that time cell phones were too expensive for the common man or cell towers didn't exist in the area's I was traversing.
I had A backpack with insulated coveralls, Sorrell boots, extra woolen socks, chopper mitts and dry gloves, A construction worker's hard hat liner or A Navy watch cap,A candle and matches, several bottles of water, an empty tuna can( to put the candle in) A bean can to melt snow in and several MRE's (meals ready to eat it pays to work for A police department that cycles old meals into the trash occasionally! Hell! I probably will never eat them but I have several just for emergencies!!)
A flashlight with extra batteries and A red snap on safety cone to signal for help might be usefull!

I agree. Keep a jump starter and jumper cable, spare belts for the engine, spare fuses, baling wire and duct tape, and oil in a Rubbermaid tote. I put some water bottles in a cooler to avoid freezing. Then I have some warm clothes, underwear, socks, 24 hours worth of food, a sleeping bag and poncho, and a small survival kit with matches and a cigarette lighter, tin foil, Ziploc bags, a tin cup, a compass, and a few OTC meds for sinus, headaches, and other aches. There are lists out there for similar setups.

We share a love of old Chevy's! My first truck was a 77 1/2 ton short box 4x4. I plowed with a 79 1/2 ton for 18 years before it was beyond repair and was replaced with a 92 k2500 6.5 diesel,i think iv'e had seven square bodies! I grew up in Western Montana off grid four miles from a lonely County road!

Man, I have had those days! Glad you weren't injured and nothing was permanently damaged. When things are going poorly it's easy for bad judgement to catch up to you (at least it is for me) and for bad decisions to lead to things getting worse quickly. Especially when you're tired, frustrated, and hungry. I'm glad you got through it, and all is a memory now. Keep up the good work. There's light at the end of the tunnel for you now!

Ok ... well I was waiting for this issue of getting stuck with snow issues. You are correct in wanting a dedicated plow truck, however, based on my experience in plowing a 2 1/2 mile road to my house in New Hampshire back in the 70's is to find a 3/4 ton vehicle with a solid frame and a decent bed, good heat, and solid running gear. this may not be an issue for you because of your mechanics skills. Plan on changing your universals almost every year. I also recommend at least an 8 ft. Fisher Plow. (10' would be better) If you have the ability to reinforce the frame where the plow frame attaches, especially up and over the horns on either side of the engine. This is a point of failure. An electric hydraulic pump would be a good choice; however, for $500 bucks .... you can beef up what you have to. When plowing, 4 things matter: (1) Power, (2) weight and (3) timing. (4) Chains on all 4 wheels. I suggest that rather than waiting for the storm to end, make a couple of quick passes during the storm and then widen and clean up the balance after. Reconfiguring your plow blade also helps. Build a "curler" top and weld it onto the top of your blade so as to throw the snow further to the side of the road when making multiple passes at higher speeds on your access road as the storm is in progress. The "curler" will save you a ton of time and makes final clean-up of the snow a lot faster. If you get a lot of very deep, heavy snow - 24" or more - then the curler will be useful. If the snow is lighter in your area, you may not need it. I am sure as a family man, you actually need to think about avoiding mistakes that can cost you your life. I very much enjoy your videos. I like the voice over presentation and the calm approach to your approach to creating your ranch, your admission of mistakes and your involvement of your wife in most of the decisions.

Not sure if your neighbor Terrell lives on his property full time or not. I know you are in an area that has no cell service, but seems some sort of radio would come in handy in situations like this. CB, FRS, or one of the Ham bands (licensing required for the Ham) would come in handy. Some frequencies will work to a point despite the mountains. Perhaps a local Ham radio club could get someone to come visit and discuss your best options?

Also love those old boxy GM trucks, and had a bunch of them myself, and that working plow is worth it alone. One tip I can give as a older guy who also lives in the rusty north, spray that undercarriage (and inside fenderwalls and frame etc.) with a mix of Bar&chain oil on sale{under$5 a gal} mixed with some used transmission fluid or diesel fuel or similar product to dilute it enough to go through a sprayer, you can pick up a cheap underbody coating gun setup on Amazon for under $15, which works very well. No , it won't make a old rusty truck look new, or even improve the looks at all, but it Will stop the rust from spreading worse, and keep it working for you. And yes people, do that to newer cars and trucks too, I've scrapped a couple vehicles w/real good engines because the bodies got to rusty around them, and now I have 22 yr. old vehicles that look almost showroom without any rust on them doing it. Will create a film underneath that picks up a little dirt, but scrape it off, and good metal underneath..unlike undercoating which when scraped off has tons of rust. Of course it's better to do in the spring, before any salt or anything, but even done in the winter it at least stops the rusting.

The truth of the matter is, everything that is out there in the world someone made, and you CAN learn how to fix it if you try. :)

my husband and I bought shiny new 1973 250 high boy ford 4 wheel drive truck that was built for the Alaska pipe line. we used it hard than in 1983 ish he was hit front left , flipped and landed up side down in a ditch on the other side of the road going the other direction. Bruce came away with a sore hand for a week. he always figured he would have died in any other vehicle. he bought 3 more trucks the last one was a 75 he had the engine from the 73 completely overhauled . the last trip we took was in 04 and than cancer took him in 05. the truck is still running great but I have never renewed the tags that expired in 04. it has less than 50 miles on it since. haven't the heart to sell it but I hate to see it unused. I loved your story about your plow truck. and he had the chassis to the 73 straightened and it is sitting in a cargo container out back. his plan was to completely rebuild the original 73. Hmmm life does have twists and turns. I love how you narrate your vidieos.

Love those square body Chevys they are very popular and everybody want one to build. They were some of the best trucks on the road.

This is seriously some next level bad assery! Granted I can design a house in 3d and render it photo realistic but I'd probably be dead up in that cabin by now 😂

Why didn't you unload the truck and plow and drive it up to the ranch?

There's plenty of water all around the house. Haul a pot or kettle up with you on the next visit for boiling water down on the stove.

Now you just need a big decal for the side of the truck that says Plow King!

I think that is your first real SNOW, that one isn’t going to melt any time soon. Man if that old truck could talk. Do you name your vehicles? Mine are Henry and Rachel.

Where's your ol' Boy Scout skills? Be prepared. We live remotely too, 10 mile dirt road to the house. We always travel with emergency supplies and even made changes to a part of our home to prepare our dog to be safe, have food and water just in case we can't make it back to care for him. We go as far as carrying a chain saw in the truck box because we have trees along our road.

I think this square body with some blasting and metal/welding work Could bring it back to life I think it is a worthy candidate for a full restoration so you have it for years to come as a plow truck

Those hard days test us but make us what we are in the end, hang in there as you seem to always do! Love the old trucks too! Just goes to show you what can be done with hard work and skill, keep up the good fight! I'm presently rebulding a Toyota Fj cruiser to have a vehicle capable of doing some serious exploring this summer.

IT seems having the plow truck running will give you some backup for your main rig. Good luck with the old beast.. Some plow is better than no plow way out where you are. It does have a cab after a fashion, despite its rusty nature. That puts you a bit ahead of those guys on open tractor plows. It reminds me of a description of th Douglas DC-3 " a collection of parts flying in loose formation. " That old bird may surprise you.

do you have any steel ammo cases.. you could fill with granola bars to stock up at the house. and one in each truck.. perhaps one zip tied to the small excavator.. . air tight.. most dogs proof.. there are some smart dogs that might get into them. hopefully you have some 1 gallon Zip lock bags for the manuals even though you probably know every page in them. have you pulled the batteries out of the big excavator on the hill to put them in the house to keep them warm and charged?
as for the 77.. it does not need to be a beauty full on resto.. just a functional truck but i don't have to tell you that..

Alway handy to have dry pasta in the house with some flavor, boil it up and it’ll keep you going, but dog, do it twice and you’ll live outside 🙄

Does your backhoe not work well for snow removal? And I was thinking that I was going to throw a bunch of money into my square body plow truck because it’s already been so incredibly helpful on our property and will continue to be for years to come.

Keep an eye on Town or County auctions some will take the word of employees who just want newer equipment and make it seem unusable. 96 F350 dump 46000 miles, supposedly bad engine and transmission paid $350 at auction. Topped off fluids to get it to our mountain property it's rusty but still going
