I often wonder if Jean had stayed if we would have seen a resurrection of the Supremes with hits and all. They keep the legend alive as "Formerly of the Supremes." Thanks ladies!
I would like to think so, but that is so up in the air. Jean was understandably dissatisfied with the way Motown was handling the Supremes by the time she left in 1973. I can't even imagine what was going on at Motown with approving the singles released for the supremes. After Floy Yoy, Automatically Sunshine was okay, but it was never going to hit number one for anyone. For a group slightly past its prime, that song should have logically been a top 20 hit, maybe top 10 with solid promotion behind it. The other singles that followed, released with Jean as lead singer, all got progressively worse with corresponding failing chart performances. Their final single with Jean leading, I Guess I'll Miss the Man, was a disaster. Who ever thought that would be a hit? The operational model at Motown had begun to change in the early seventies. The Supremes really needed stronger A&R guidance, but they didn't have those skills in the group. In the 70s, acts that could write and produce their own material fared better than those that did not. Look at Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, for example, and later Rick James and the Commodores. Even the Miracles, popular in the 60s but never as big as the Supremes, blasted out of nowhere to have a number one hit in the mid-70s with Love Machine, a song written by two members of the group. Jean knew something was wrong, but I don't think she knew how to fix it, so I think the Supremes were kind of done when she left. Recently, I discovered the song Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music from the Stoned Love album. I absolutely love the song and can't believe it was never released. I am not sure if Motown ever even considered releasing it as a single, but Motown opted to move forward with the River Deep Mountain High duet between The Supremes and the Four Tops. I honestly think Together could have been a smash, possibly even number one. Berry didn't really know what to do with the Supremes and the 70s, which is truly unfortunate, because the group was swaggerjacked by the Three Degrees and other girl groups of that era. The potential for another great era was there, but none of the parties involved seemed to know how to make it happen.

Hell yes! Former ladies see the light and they are going to make every step spark gold of the supremes journey! Yes! Florence Mary and Diana are written in stone! They no longer have a blemish! Never had one these days on!the creator knows what he placed on their backs and they came out remarkably! The skies have their road written out right above your head if you look up! All the women of the supremes are now able to see and feel it and they are going to whip it up good! They will make sure all fulfilled in delivery and it is great! Just the beginning! ....

I find, all the Supreme ladies of all their pasr formations sing better and more beautiful than Dianna Ross', their voices are much stronger, with much more soul and a better timbre.
Scherrie has a beautiful powerful voice ! Nobody can touch Jean , that voice is from heaven. Linda has a beautiful voice also. These ladies blended well together, wish they could of had a greater success. I would buy their music. Shame on Mr. Gordy.

This was the best lineup of Flo's, the band is awesome
Never get tired watching over and over again.
I, as a young middle class teenager, did NOT recognize the exchange of Cindy & Lynda. Until I bought Floy Joy.
For years, I thought that WAS Cindy on the front cover of Floy Joy. It wasn't until I saw the back cover that I realized it wasn't. 😂
"The 'FLOY JOY" Album Took MY Whole Allowance, It Was Well Worth It"...😂
AS A KEYBOARDIST/ MUSIC DIRECTOR..I CAN PLAY ALL THESE *** SUPREMES*** SONGS. I LOVE THE AWESOME PLATINUM SONGS OF *** HOLLAND DOZIER HOLLAND***

So sad Gordy tried to destroy their friendship. 😢
