Thanks for the video. I picked up this exact clock today at a yard sale for $5! It came with the same key that you use to wind it up. Mine chimes and winds and it in great cosmetic shape. However, when I wind it up, it does not tick. Do you think this is an oil issue? Thanks for any reply.
I picked up a Howard Miller wind up clock, but it doesn't have a pendulum, starts and runs automatically when wound. It has gained about 5 minutes, and since there is no pendulum I can stop until it is in sync with the actual time, will it damage the clock to move the minute hand counter clockwise (backwards) by 5 minutes? I've always been told never to move clock hands backwards. I really don't want to manually move the hands clockwise 12 hours to get it to the correct time. Thanks... John
Yeah you can move the hands backwards. I do it all the time on my clocks. Some clocks however should not be moved backwards. Based on your situation you should be fine
I typically wind it until it doesn't let me turn the key anymore, there are a couple of my clocks that I prefer only winding it until I feel it getting tight.
Does this clock have a tick tock to it. I don't hear anything after winding mine. On the right side of the face i have 4 settings. Not sure what they are used for. Can you be of any further assistance. Thanks in advance.
It does tick, just very quietly. The 4 settings are probably for changing chime melody. I’m guessing one is for silent and the other 3 saying something like West Minster, St Michael, and Wittington
After further investigation I've come to realize the top horizontal gear is not spinning. I'm going to do a thorough cleaning like in the video you provided and take it from there. Thank u so much for your prompt response.
The middle hole to wind will not wind tight, it just keeps winding and the holes on either end are wound tight … so it’s not wkn at all … it was brand new when I took it out of the package, so it does not have any dust or dirt
Think it’s because I wound all 3 of them again on the second or 3td day ? I didn’t know how often you were supposed to wind them, so I just wound them again just enough to get it slightly tight. And they were all three fine at this point….. then it just stopped working, and I realized that the middle just kept going round and round and never would tighten
I also just bought one of these at a thrift store. It is missing the key also. How do I know which key to buy as a replacement? The clock is a Howard Miller Westminster Chime mantel style. The numbers on the back side of the clock are AEL01 Zeeland Michigan. Made in Germany. I’m hoping you can help me find the correct size key 😀

The mechanism may need to be oiled and/or cleaned. I recommend purchasing a clock oil to lube it. There are some good videos on TH-cam to watch to show you how to oil your clock.
There's a switch on the left side of the clock, when the switch is down, the clock is silenced. When it is in the up position, the clock chimes every 15 minutes.
Probably one of the nicest in your collection.
One of my favorites. Whenever I move into an apartment I obviously can't bring all of my clocks, but this one will probably come with me.
neat video! the chimes remind me of the worthington.
Thanks, and yeah it's very similar to it.
When you're winning the clock are the 2 on the side. The chime winding and the one in the middle the clock work winding
As you wind.. the support function is ???????
It would help if there was an explanation of what each aperture does ! The middle is I
I assume the 7 day mechanism, but the other two please?
Left hole does hour strike, middle is the running power and the right does melody chimes on every quarter hour.
Thank you for the upload. Do you know the model name? Year?
It's a Howard Miller Andrews, the year I don't know though
Telling us how to know when to stop winding would be good to add in the video.
When the key stops turning. When it's wound to it's max, the key won't be able to turn anymore.
How often do you have to wind this clock?
Once a week

Might need to be oiled if it's not running. If not, a cleaning may be needed.
@@Jamestube8439 thanks. Looks like that’s out of my expertise. Will see if I have someone who works on clocks in my area.

That’s strange. I wonder if the middle hole is connected properly to the spring to give it that winding power

First things first it’s important to see what kind of key it takes. Who is the manufacturer of the clock?

How do you silence the clock ?
There's a switch on the left side of the clock, when the switch is down, the clock is silenced. When it is in the up position, the clock chimes every 15 minutes.
Which wind is which ?
Middle is the power to the clock, I believe the left is the hour strike and the right one is the melody I believe.
ooh
ahhh
Is there a way to fix if my clock is chiming one minute late?
There definitely is, but I’m unsure how to fix that
What is the role of each key?
The middle does the power to keep the time, the left does the hour strike chime, and the right does the melody chimes.
@@Jamestube8439 Tks! Can I just wind the middle one but not winding the other two? can it have effect of being a silient clock
How do you silence this ?
There’s a switch on the left side of the clock face that says silence/chime. Pull the switch down and it will silence the clock.

No, it doesn't have that feature unfortunately.
Can I have it please for £0?
No
