Will Chainsaw-Milled Gazebo Rafters Hold Up Through the Winter? #45

  • Living in a tent year-round, I NEED a place to get out of the summer sun, heat and bugs so have decided to try my hand at building a screened-in deck using nothing but a chainsaw and chainsaw mill.
In this episode, I scrounge the forest for trees that I've previously cut or that have blown down to mill up for rafters for my project.
If you are interested in seeing the whole Gazebo project, here is a link to the playlist:

Loving how the gazebo is turning out! I also love sleeping in a tent and feeling the sun warm up my tent at 6 o'clock in the morning while still laying in my sleeping bag for an hour previously because the birds wake up so damn early and start talking to each other immediately. But the sun warmth forces me out of the tent. Then you smell the dew, the pine and the charcoal and smoke from the few left over embers from the night before. And, then the day feels perfect for whatever adventure you I feel like tackling for the day. At that moment every morning I instantly think.... Bacon! But, I only do that a few times per year. I love it. You're living the life in my opinion!

Danner and I just did this for the shed to (not so) tiny house project. It was full sun, 80-90% humidity. Despite all our measuring and circular saw, I think you ended up with better cuts! We were short on time, so won’t get roof up for his next episode, but it’s interesting to watch someone else do this. The walks for the workshop side are done! Great video. I know it was more work than tge video portrays to do this alone.

Ryan, there is a great product "Tri-Flow" it has teflon and you can find it on Amazon. Maybe use on your mill metal bars. We used it where exposed metal beams were getting surface rust. The teflon penetrated and slowed the rusting.

Ryan, I envy your journey up there. Ive got a few acres in northern lower Michigan, gonna build a small trapper shack in the woods for the kids and grandkids. Im sure someone has already said this but you should back up those rafter screws with a framing spike or two. The screws don't have the sheer strength that a spike does.
Keep the faith and enjoy the adventure.

If you put gussets across the inside corners, cut on 45 degrees at the ends, you could tie both sides to the posts. Little boards, much stiffness. Don't we all want stiffer posts?

Hi. Tom Wilson, here, and I want to let you know how impressed I am with your chainsaw sculptering. ;)
My dream--and this why I am so interested in what you are doing with wild tree lumber--is to build a treehouse to live in.
The base you have for your gazebo, looks like what could work for my treehouse floor.
But I need the floor you have so very solidly built, up, about 12 to 14 feet.
And that would be my floor for my "dream" treehouse. So, I assume, I must have a minimum of 4 to 5, 16ft. [guessing there?] beams or columns I mean, to hold/support that treehouse floor?
The other option, likely, also, it to have a mature or two to attach the house to, so to support the walls and roof.
The idea was, to have something like an open garage underneath the floor for vehicles or maybe a small space for a tool shed, too.
The manner you bolt those timbers together is quite educational. Something I badly need to ever pull my dream off. I am no spring chicken, but I do dream like one. ;) I am also, chainsaw dumb.
Retired, and have just about giving up on human beings man's best friend, so I will likely end up with the best, most proven animal to be my best friend? Not that they are not a "huge responsibility," yes, this I do know for sure.
    Thank you for some inspiration.

I think the mathmatical term you need is a messygon.. But I am a big fan of this type of building.. Live in a house from 1905, nothing is straight. You measure everything 5 times and just average the answer and then cut of a little bit more to make it fit.

Hi again. Tom Wilson. I forgot to ask you about those floor supports you have. I think you have 1 timer support for each corner[4] and maybe 2 to 4 more on the outside centers? You would also have 4 centers, but are they all supported, is the question? Say, 4 total and all perfectly centered? Sorry about this technical question. :(
And, most important, how deep are they [the same for all?] and what do you set them in, say, gravel, concrete, etc. and especially, how deep for each one?
Thank you very much, Mr. lonesome chainsaw man. ;)

Watching this is like another feather in my cap on the road of life I never thought it was possible to mill your own lumber its really not that bad so if you dont or cant afford a band saw this aint a bad way to go and I knew nothing about trees and Im a biology/chemistry major I should know something. But like he said look at craigs list for materials liker old barn wood or tearing down old buildings and using or reselling the materials for other purposes like "repurposed materials" that can be a treasure trove of ideas Ie seen barrels and buckets for feeding live stock or rolls or rubber fro,m con veyer belts for horse barn flooring or pens, pipe sheets of insulation, roiis of materials old food containers and barrels plastic or wooden. I like cam;ping and hunting and fishing skiing boating to. And an avid DIY'r I say a man needs a shop where he can experiment with things.
