  • The Rogue has been a savior to Nissan; a runaway hit with consumers that has carried the brand through their peaks and valleys. So this next generation better be spot-on, right? Well, for the vast majority of Rogue shoppers this one is going to impress with its upscale looks and premium level features. But there is, potentially, one caveat: drivers, proceed with caution.

    “Never understood the Rogue’s sweeping appeal”
    Nissan heavily discounts their vehicles, they’re generous with their financing, and rely heavily on fleet sales. In all seriousness, this is a major upgrade from the previous gen. Nissan’s been making big strides design and content wise. Reliability still has to be proven to me but I do wish they regain their Pre-Ghosn reputation.

    So close! This would be a serious contender (for me) if not for the CVT and the in-your-face safety tech. As for that CVT, Steve, you did do a nice job of trying to point out its strengths. Of course, I'd have to drive it to fully make an informed decision. Everyone's different and old-school me likes a traditional automatic or manual transmission. Keep up the excellent work - love your videos.

    Funny coincidence, but had JUST finished rewatching your old reviews of the Forester and Crosstrek before watching this one. All thoughtful and thorough, of course. Similar tenor, though. Wasn’t surprised to hear you mention Subaru in this video. Ergonomics, especially where safety-feature controls are concerned, get a little slapdash. And the fact that the best a CVT can hope for is damning with faint praise is unfortunate. All fundamentally good (after the safety fix on applicable models), and will continue to sell a ton, but not for enthusiasts.

    "...not truly a compact SUV but a mid-size..." (1:05) Sorry, Steve, I have to differ. The previous generation Rogue at 185" in length might have been considered "tweener" (along with the Tiguan) but the 183" long current generation is pretty firmly in the compact category along with the Chevy Equinox, CR-V, and RAV4. The smallest of the midsize unibody SUVs such as the Santa Fe and Ford Edge are about five inches longer than the Rogue and almost all of the smaller midsize vehicles range up to 193" in length, about 10" longer than the Rogue. Add to that the fact that the 181/181 HP and torque figures and CVT of the Rogue puts it firmly in the compact CUV category. An appealing compact SUV? Yeah. But a "midsize"? No.
    All of that, of course, is a question of the Rogue's proper market category and competition, not its quality and features. I haven't owned a Nissan product since a much loved 240Z from decades ago but I have to say that the new Rogue looks to be a strong competitor in the compact category and a huge improvement over its last generation. That's especially true for consumers whose primary mission is navigating the jungle of urban/suburban traffic and (very) occasional "adventures" on gravel and dirt roads.

      The Rogue offers a lot more than a RAV4 in all the areas, and talking about the powertrain? There’s going to be a 3 Cylinder VC-TURBO with 201 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The Rogue is a better product than the RAV4.

      They don’t recline. There’s a typo in the press kit." If he drove it last July I'm guessing it was a pre-prod that may have had the recline seat. Sounds like Nissan was on the fence about including it across the board.

    Steve's comments on the CVT sounded likely he's running for office (very political). Is the CVT as smooth as a traditional automatic? Nissan doesn't have a good reputation on the longevity/reliability of their CVTs. Is the engineering of this CVT any different then past CVTs?

    • @orlandocfi
      @orlandocfi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His characterization of the driving experience is quite accurate. Nissan’s continued love affair with the CVT is painful to those who love driving, but the average driver has no idea what a CVT does, until they smell it burning up under their car. Nissan supposedly redesigned this CVT, but buy at your own risk.
