One of the big factors that got them the vote was the 1st world war and the huge contribution they made to the country. What many people do not realise though is that many men did not have the vote in the early days of their campaign!

The suffragettes were the middle classs women who had the freedom to be aggressive. ( oh not no rights for my maid).
If working class women suffragists proto unions. They couldn’t be disruptive as working class women who have ALWAYS worked.

Middle class ladies weren’t to be side lined by lower class women

"Peaceful campaigning had achieved little" - other than all the examples you gave in the first part?

Rich women voted for the English Parliament under the Forty-Shilling Freehold/Franchise Act of 1430.

Excellent Video as always Luke, please, please if you ever get the chance, maybe do a video on the Father of English liberty and egalitarianism,"Freeborn" John Lilburne,l can think of few men who suffered more for their beliefs. A great man of the English Civil War who was brilliantly portrayed in the Channel 4 Civil War Miniseries "The Devil's Whore" by Tom Goodman-Hill. He was the Bane of both the Royalists (whom he despised) and the Parliamentarians (whom he fought for!) He was the quintessential Puritan who became a Leveller and believed in "Freeborn Rights" for everyone, being born into Royalty made no one above the law of God and man,as it should be. Cromwell had to silence him in the end but he made him suffer for years first, truly this great libertarian deserves a Statue in every City of England especially in Durham, the Town of his childhood. A more fascinating character you will not find in your search for Egalitarianism, liberty and Bravery!

I enjoyed this as usual, but I think you said ‘Professor Jane Purvis’ when here name is not Jane, but June. A detail, but important. What about a programme about Sylvia Pankhurst, who was a socialist and opposed the war?

@@debbieepstein1205 You are right Debbie! Apologies for this, an oversight on our part there. I hope she can forgive us - we don't normally quote contemporary historians!

Quite right Daniel, Lilburne was an incredible character! In fact, he does get quite a few mentions in our existing video on the English Civil War (I wasn't really aware of him before we made this so enjoyed it - we put him on the thumbnail next to Cromwell too): th-cam.com/video/bsrRsy8E2AQ/w-d-xo.html

Who won the vote for women - Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky. Fear of Bolshevism restored the Parliamentary Franchise to rich women over 30. The women who worked for the war effort were basically ignored.

In the upper right corner of the screen is a screw nut icon . Tap it to change the playback speed. You're coming across as a bit entitled.
