Glad I found this. None of the 3 contractors I contacted have shown up and I've been super frustrated trying to get this fixed. Mine has a couple of small cracks on the back of the box
How do you cure the cement being that it’s on the floor? I just added the cement to the flooring and now I don’t know what to do for curing it. What do you suggest?
I believe you have to cure or season it after application. Usually 48+ hours after it’s coated you should apply 200 degree heat for 1-2 hours then apply a 500 degree heat for the final cure I could be wrong
My firebox is cracked on back panel and is about 1/2” wide in places. The floor isn’t cracked but chipped in 2 places. I figure most chimney specialist will recommend to replace it. Is the product you used durable for all sides of the firebox?
Hey Miles, this should work as fireproof mortar so wherever you would need mortar this will do the job. Double check the tub to confirm. I hope this helps
That’s a good question big. You would want to check with your local fireplace guys to confirm. I would say as long as the structure is safe it would be good to go.
Hey I have a hole in the back of my fireplace. Can I use this or something similar to patch the hole and continue to use the fire? The size of the hole is about the size of a golf ball
Hey silent, this would be the stuff. Read it but on the back of your container and see if multiple coats are discussed. Generally three coats of a product will provide good results. If your hole is the size of a golf ball you might need to put some steel mesh in there so your repair mortar doesn’t fall out. I hope this helps!
I know this is an older video but my fireplace brick is falling apart on the back wall. Cracking so I patched it with the stuff you are using and this winter started cracking again and falling out. Can you recommend a fix or just do the same repair
Hi Diana. Unless you’re replacing the insert, fireplace mortar would be a great solution. Definitely read the specifications and the curing process for whichever product you use. It may help with the durability. I hope this helps
The back of mine is pretty damaged. I have used fireplace mortar in the past and it lasted for a couple of years. It’s cracked again. I assume I can just keep going over it or is there some kind of panel I can put in?
See if anyone in your area can cut you a new refractory panel. These can wear down to where they just start to crumble. You can also see if you can find the make/model of the FP and see if a Refractory Panel kit is available for them.

Was this for your own property and are you still using the fireplace? Would like to know if the skim coat you did over the whole floor actually held. Have the cracks resurfaced?
Hello Dustin. I have a fireplace that I hadn't used in years. I had it inspected about a month ago and the rep said that the fireplace is in great condition. He noticed a very small hairline crack in the back of fireplace. He recommended getting some fireplace mortar to repair. I procrastinated and hadnt placed mortar on crack in time. Getting very cold freezing weather the next few days. Can I use the fireplace with the hairline crack? I can put mortar on tonight but how long will I have to wait to use fireplace? Thanks for the help.
Hey Joe check the specifications on the back but in less carbon monoxide can get in the house you should be able to burn a fire. Especially if it’s a Brick fireplace. Those P fabricated units are contained inside so you should be good to use it
The cracks are on the floor of the fireplace...what is the best way to cure the patched cement? Building the fire above it heats it to much higher than 200 degrees and then the ash starts to fall on the new cement in the cracks.
That’s a great question Joseph. I’ve heard different viewers with different curing times and temperatures. In your case I would try to curate with a blow torch Or a heat gun. That way you could be intentional with your heat placement. I hope this helps
@@homemend Thanks for the insight....much appreciated. By chance, do you know of a fireplace cement that could be used that does not need to cure before building a fire?
Would this make it completely safe to use? We had our fireplace cleaned and the guy said that we would have to replace the entire insert and if we have a fire the home owners wouldn't cover it if we didnt??
I just had this done last week before the arctic air hit us in Texas. They charged us $1300 to do the back and floor. 2 hours work that included cleaning the 2-story fleu.😳 We were told to let it cure for at least 24 hrs. We waited 48 hrs. Now 5 days later it has big flakes growing on the back. Thoughts? Advice?
Definitely check this specifications for the product used but I would email the company or at least leave them a message so it is recorded. I hope this helps. Read about the product use… This may be part of it
@@homemend Hi Dustin , it's comforting to know that you are okay and it's safe to use. Is this suitable for spreading over cement board on a firebox and hearth? I'm making a hearth using stones and pebbles.
Hey Vanessa thank you so much for sharing that. This one seem to be more of a repair mortar but is certainly rated for it. It could get pricey versus the cost of regular mortar. Since you’re doing a whole project I would look into that but yes this stuff was awesome and held up nice.
Thanx D! I actually have to do this and now I know how. Do you think those cracks can cause some smoke to blow back into the house..mabey because of draft? That's an issue I've had last winter. Thanx for the vid✌
Jason, the cracks once they get large enough are a danger to the fireplace itself as the floor and wall panels help to spread the heat out evenly across the "box" or fireplace. once the material breaks down and isnt there, the areas missing the material will break down and get damaged by the heat. The smoke issues are completely different. These fireplaces are notorious for smoking. Could be a wind issue. Could be that you turned on your central heating and changed the pressure in the house and the smoke is being pulled back down. You could try cracking a window next to the fireplace and see if it helps the unit breath better and not cause that smoke to come back down.
Nice I just did mine and it says to cure it with a small fire (200 celcius) for one hour. Then wait 24 hours to use regularly. Think this step is necessary? It's been about 4 days since I applied it.
hey mike! i couldn't tell you man..it sounds like something they print on the directions to make them sound official..lol it doesnt make much sense. i wouldnt think so.
Mike, the curing process helps to make sure that the new material doesn't pop even when it "dries" there is often still moisture in it and heating too quickly can cause it to pop.
Hello Dustin - Thanks for the video! I'm looking at the product you used on Amazon and there are some complaints about the cement bubbling up after running a fire, even after letting it sit and dry for days. Have you experienced any bubbling with this product after running a fire?
