Couldn't agree more. The best thing on Diablo 2 and espacially PoE is that a perfect rare item is almost always better than the uniques you can use. In D3 you already know how your character will look like before you even start playing it and as soon as you have these items you are practicly done whereas in D2 or PoE you still have a chance (even if it is really small) to get that one item that pushes you over the top.

The reason why it was so amazing was because it was programmed with D&D's item generation mechanics in mind. There wasn't any 'balance' built into the game which allowed for asymmetrically overpowered items appearing which has the game feel exciting and different because every item drop opens up a whole new style of play.

It's Path of Diablo probably, it has its own Vaal orb thing where it can change unpredictably, one outcome just doesn't change the item at all so that's that I think

D2 is obviously more rewarding. I had made a wiz few days ago in d3 light+archon and cleared gr83 from lv1to70 and all the items I needed in about 6 hours....was it satisfying ?the answer is FUCK NO .why in the name of god I have to try a fucking gr9000 if is the fucking same of a gr83 but much slower? I remember when I had finally dropped a MAL rune ,and i was able to make my self my decent rolled Infinity on a colossus vulge axe it was a glorious day and every time I look at that thing I remember all the good days in d2...when I look at my wizard pro geared for grift I feel like I want to uninstall d3.If Diablo 2 has D3 graphic but darker ...just dreaming.
I just find it funny when people like you think finding your set gear in over 2 weeks is "satisfying" compared with the middle ground of a few days. So now we have PoE where drops don't happen for ages, and Grim Dawn where it's offline but fuck you anyway good luck finding that legendary set on top of the other 20 + crap white great we spew.
maybe he had the two ber's waiting to be socketed into a polearm for his infinity and all he needed was the final piece. it was always rewarding to see a hr drop but even more so when making an item you've spent a long time farming for. d2 > d3
I'm just glad we have a genuinely amazing game like path of exile to follow suit in the style of diablo 2. I hope that, if they decide to make a diablo 4, they don't focus so much on streamlining and focus more on buildcraft, economy, and general interesting/niche stuff. I don't think that's impossible to do while also being a modern game. Personal taste of course, but I also hope they bring back the minor horror element the previous diablo games had. Enemies in diablo 2 never particularly frightened me but it was much more evident I was fighting some kind of hellspawn in a dying world than it was in diablo 3, which made me lose interest in the world rather quickly.

You can build Necromancer with summon focus so your search all equip that can increase Minions HP, Damage or + Skeleton/Golem skill You can build Dual Wield Barbarian with Right Click Speed DPS that Life Steal Per Hit and also Cast ___ Per Hit Heck you can even build Tank Sorceress with Mana Shield and equip that give you effect : Cast _____ when struck (Chain Lightning Blaze, etc) just for fun Each loot is unique, Some Unique equipment can even have more than 3-4 perk. Each equipment have rune/gem socket to make us customize it even more And don't let me start with Charms for late game. Diablo 3 loot only increase main stat. No unique perk. When you find Barbarian equip with better Strength, than you equip it, otherwise you sell it to NPC. Diablo 3 limit your playstyle based on skill usage. Lack of customization Customization comparison (without expansion each game) Diablo 2 : Attribute (Str, Int, Dex, etc), Skill Tree, Equipment perk, Equipment socket Diablo 3 : Skill choice, Equipment perk (very limited)
The thing that bored me in D2 was the lack of endgame content. Yeah there were ubers, but thats not enough. At the moment PoE is becoming my most played game because the content is massive and now this summer we are going to get massive expansion with a lot of changes to the game.

I wish I played D2 back in the day.. didn't get my first PC until 2001 and never heard of these sorts of games until many years later. Hell I didn't even know about the diablo franchise until D3 was announced and that's the only diablo I've played so far.. Damn I missed out a lot in my gaming childhood..
Diablo 2 LOD had the best loot system, it had the best Stat distribution system and it had the best skill system. because it was a skill TREE system which not too many games these days do. I still have all my accounts on D2 and all the characters on them. like 3-4 WW barbarians, builds I tried out just for fun, pretty much BiS gear on all of them but my 3rd account. my amazons and my barbarians were my pride and joy. and it was fun as hell going into duels with my blizzard sorc, teleporting around casting random blizzards waiting for the hammerdins to port into them and die.

In the last 2 weeks on the Europe ladder i built a hammerdin with a hoto, stealth , SOJ, magefist, cta, shako, sandtreks, 17-10 ama Torch and i filled up a few mules with ists, gul, mals, puls, Lo's and other goodies :)--- he had crazy cast rate and 3k hammer dmg ;).. did not even get an eni yet. I got a lot of stuff because the ladder should be reset in May and a lot of people are giving away their gear. I also found an ist in the arcane sanctuary. Last year a built a ww barb with full ik set and I found a Zod rune in the throne room :). hehe i deleted diablo2 and characters twice since last year because after playing 2 much i need to focus my energy on work and other things! but d2 is an inspiration to me and ts awesome!!
I really hope Diablo 4 has a similar loot drop system as Diablo 2. What I mean is Mob, Boss and area level determines what can drop. Not like in Diablo 3 where any Mob/Boss can drop any Legendary/Set. So we can Farm for specific Legendaries and set items by farming specific bosses or areas.

The problem with D3 is not so much the items, it's the introduction of GR's, so usually one build per class is on top each patch. And most people copy/paste. I would like to see a rune system in D3 though, but if it comes back it will probably be in D4...

That's absolutely not the problem. People don't think the game is boring because there is only one class of the leaderboard. It's grindy in a dumb way, and there is practically no sense of progression and very little customization compared to other games like Grim Dawn and PoE.
GR's are the problem. D2 had lvl 99 as max and there where no stronger enemies after that. If you would limit the D3 to let's say GR50, max gem levels to 50 as well and put TX as max - you would see much more diversification in builds. Of course with the sets be leveled down a bit in their power(s). There are other lackluster things in D3, but it still is the game, that even if I take a month long pause, will trigger me and play it a lot. Something about it is just the fluidity of it... Can't explain really.
Diablo 2 still has an amazing loot system. Its a shame that there are bots that ruin gameplay but u gotta respect the high lvl bots keeping games going and itemhunting to keep the market fresh and supplied. Although i find putting in the time to acquire items in a legit fashion much more rewarding personally but then again snagging a cheap shako or for free is always nice as it gives u that edge as this game can be very gear dependent whatever ur build may be. If your a veteran Diablo 2 lod player you know what im talking about. Its also nice to see new players and helping them out with gear and advice because the more players this game has the better and i always pay it forward as the game has a funny way of returning it back. Best game ever +1 all day
I'd played Diablo 3 for 4-6 months and hated it. after one year blizzard made Diablo 2 compatible for Windows 7. this games loot system is the best I've ever seen. the look and feel of this game is creepy as Fuck, same as Diablo. newer players should try this game and for $20 bucks with expansion, that's a no brainer.

I feel like the biggest issue of d3 is the fact that they don't have a cap on paragon levels. They made basically a neverending grind that only results in paragon levels, and you're capped out on BiS gear basically the first 20 hours of playing. Then the only improvements you make is paragons. I still do ladderclimbs in d2, I try to hit 99 at least one ladder a year. What's so great about it is that there's a finish line, and the loot system makes it so that no matter how well geared I am, there's always improvements to be made, even after 1000s of hours. And I also feel like they ruined HC in d3 due to GRs, it doesn't matter how good you are, you'll still die at some point. And the fact that shared loot/instant bis gear makes playing HC in d3 the equivalent of playing poker with fake money. Where as if I die in d2 hc I'm really fucked for possibly entire season. Also the static difficulty where the challenge is making it in the beginning and then gradually becoming stronger so you can farm more efficiently... Man, d3 is literally the opposite of what it should be, the opposite of what made d2 so great... Oh well, I guess it's the curse of the millenials and their need for instant gratification that Blizzard is so desperately trying to cater to.
This is so true, and what it means is that D3 is so fixable. Someone could take D3 to a private server, make some tweaks and end with an amazing game. First go back to a D2 style loot system with viable yellow/blue gear, non-set legendaries, charms, and rune words. Second, get rid of Area Damage stat. This forces only one play style for every build of every class; i.e., gathering everything into a tight little bundle and trying to AoE spell the bundle down to multiply Area Damage stat. To me, that ruins the game even more than set bonuses. Every season is a zdps monk, zdps barb for gathering everything into one tiny spot, and 2 glass cannon dps to blow up that spot. Derp. That's the most fun formula? Area Damage stat is the culprit. And you can't compete on the solo leaderboards without competing on the 4-man boards, with that formula, to gain the higher gem/paragon/enchant levels. So you *have* to play that one formula, season after season, because of Area Damage stat.
agree with all of this but one thing that always put me off d2 was how hard it was back in the day to gear for meta or "realize on your own" what the best items would be. D3 has a very intuitive mathematical model so that as dumbed down as it might be compared to d2 - it's rewarding to be able to figure out a build on your own as easy as one two three. I guess if d2 had some sort of straight-forward instruction system or a sort of way to figure out "okay the game contains these 38 different types of builds to strive for (which all contain concrete builds)" it would be much easier to get into it. It would cost you the mystery of the game and all that, however so that's a major drawback in my opinion. I always played the fuck out of d2 simply due to the ambient, the story and so forth. so amazing! Flavor in this game is just incredible compared to anything else really
I Think today its very important to bring new content like poe does, it keep the game fresh, and even old Players come back, new Items, maps, mechamics, heist, harvest, new Bosses, new stuff Overall, d3 was so minimalistic, it had nothing, and the seasons are a joke, poe is maybe little Komplex but once ur into it, it isnt, but u can do alot even Build ur hideout so its nice u can do what u want, if blightmap delimap, simulacrium, shaper Kills, u elder, sirus, cpture beast, idk what all, and its just nice and thats the rightway what leads to succes
D2 is installed and used frequently. I uninstalled D3 the year it launched. The game that is STILL in development. Lesson learned. Don't buy modern games.
On your comment of the charms being annoying due to it cluttering your inventory space I do understand your complaint however I personally see value in sacrificing one advantage (inventory space) in lieu of a different advantage (buffs you wouldn't be able to otherwise have through equip load) I won't say I'm extremely familiar with the game but in my playthrough I saw it through that lens and found it to be intriguing and that same ideology of advantages and disadvantages has been mirrored in the souls-borne series through item types. Just thought that was kinda cool
The problem in Diablo 3 is that it has not more builds, is not more an ARPG, just a casual adventure as thousands out there. Path of Exile is the real Diablo 3 online, and Grim Dawn is how it should be offline.

Completely agree! Basically D3 itemization is complete garbage. Most legendary items change how skills works and thus making some of them required for a build to work. D2 has "Preffered" items for certain build but build will still WORK with almost any other items but will be weaker. That's all, you can play how you want and items make you stronger. They are not a requirement as in d3. Seriously, D2 with new graphics (not the ones from d3..), biggger inventory/stash, gold pickup would be sooooooooooooo much better than d3 is.
d2 was the shit i got into it after playing wc2 and wc2 for a long time and i got so addicted, didnt play until lod was out but i shortly got into it and loved how deep it was. such an awesome community too. i played non ladder early on and became good would do baal runs and trade all day then hang in the private duel games all night. loved my hybrid amazon the most.. also loved bvb and pvp melee duels. eventually set up a bot and shit even fun times. d3 sucked balls i tried it but i couldnt keep playing for long.
D2 is/was hands down the best loot grinding game ever.PoE is getting close these days to it, but still has some way to go particularly in targeting specific items and the redundancy of certain types of items. But PoE is way way ahead in terms of character development.
pretty late here but i think the biggest "problem" was getting away from a skill tree / points. It's so hard for the D3 balance team to actually balance their game because all of the numbers were so fucking stupid high and tied to weapons which would benefit different skills which were already "+5400% damage" LUL.
I really hope they'd make primal items in d3 roll two legendary effects which complement one another, or buff the legendary effects altogether....i think if they were extremely rare but 'gamebreaking' at the same time, you'd see some new builds shine and add a bit more diversity to the game. like imagine if you could get up to 2/3 of these per season and potentially make a build which revolved around them to push the GR's.

This is simply not true in D2s case. Almost all endgame builds are mostly Uniques and Runewords with a couple rares (mainly jewellery/gloves/boots).

D2 itemisation makes the game. Limited builds, repetitive endgame, but the thrill for item hunt makes up for all the lacks

Diablo 2 LOD had the best loot system, it had the best Stat distribution system and it had the best skill system. because it was a skill TREE system which not too many games these days do. I still have all my accounts on D2 and all the characters on them. like 3-4 WW barbarians, builds I tried out just for fun, pretty much BiS gear on all of them but my 3rd account. my amazons and my barbarians were my pride and joy. and it was fun as hell going into duels with my blizzard sorc, teleporting around casting random blizzards waiting for the hammerdins to port into them and die.

Thank you! It is so hard to explain what you are showing here! I cant even explain what makes d2 the best game but you did a good job. In the last 2 weeks on the Europe ladder i built a hammerdin with a hoto, stealth , SOJ, magefist, cta, shako, sandtreks, 17-10 ama Torch and i filled up a few mules with ists, gul, mals, puls, Lo's and other goodies :)--- he had crazy cast rate and 3k hammer dmg ;).. did not even get an eni yet. I got a lot of stuff because the ladder should be reset in May and a lot of people are giving away their gear. I also found an ist in the arcane sanctuary. Last year a built a ww barb with full ik set and I found a Zod rune in the throne room :). hehe i deleted diablo2 and characters twice since last year because after playing 2 much i need to focus my energy on work and other things! but d2 is an inspiration to me and ts awesome!!

I really hope Diablo 4 has a similar loot drop system as Diablo 2. What I mean is Mob, Boss and area level determines what can drop. Not like in Diablo 3 where any Mob/Boss can drop any Legendary/Set. So we can Farm for specific Legendaries and set items by farming specific bosses or areas.

The problem with D3 is not so much the items, it's the introduction of GR's, so usually one build per class is on top each patch. And most people copy/paste.
I would like to see a rune system in D3 though, but if it comes back it will probably be in D4...

That's absolutely not the problem. People don't think the game is boring because there is only one class of the leaderboard. It's grindy in a dumb way, and there is practically no sense of progression and very little customization compared to other games like Grim Dawn and PoE.
GR's are the problem. D2 had lvl 99 as max and there where no stronger enemies after that. If you would limit the D3 to let's say GR50, max gem levels to 50 as well and put TX as max - you would see much more diversification in builds. Of course with the sets be leveled down a bit in their power(s).
There are other lackluster things in D3, but it still is the game, that even if I take a month long pause, will trigger me and play it a lot. Something about it is just the fluidity of it... Can't explain really.
Diablo 2 still has an amazing loot system. Its a shame that there are bots that ruin gameplay but u gotta respect the high lvl bots keeping games going and itemhunting to keep the market fresh and supplied. Although i find putting in the time to acquire items in a legit fashion much more rewarding personally but then again snagging a cheap shako or for free is always nice as it gives u that edge as this game can be very gear dependent whatever ur build may be. If your a veteran Diablo 2 lod player you know what im talking about. Its also nice to see new players and helping them out with gear and advice because the more players this game has the better and i always pay it forward as the game has a funny way of returning it back. Best game ever +1 all day

I'd played Diablo 3 for 4-6 months and hated it. after one year blizzard made Diablo 2 compatible for Windows 7. this games loot system is the best I've ever seen. the look and feel of this game is creepy as Fuck, same as Diablo. newer players should try this game and for $20 bucks with expansion, that's a no brainer.

I always tend to defend torchlight 2, as it's also a superlative game in many ways, but yes, even that one can keep up with the variety and uniqueness of d2's loot.. probably due to budget

I feel like the biggest issue of d3 is the fact that they don't have a cap on paragon levels. They made basically a neverending grind that only results in paragon levels, and you're capped out on BiS gear basically the first 20 hours of playing. Then the only improvements you make is paragons.
I still do ladderclimbs in d2, I try to hit 99 at least one ladder a year. What's so great about it is that there's a finish line, and the loot system makes it so that no matter how well geared I am, there's always improvements to be made, even after 1000s of hours.
And I also feel like they ruined HC in d3 due to GRs, it doesn't matter how good you are, you'll still die at some point. And the fact that shared loot/instant bis gear makes playing HC in d3 the equivalent of playing poker with fake money. Where as if I die in d2 hc I'm really fucked for possibly entire season. Also the static difficulty where the challenge is making it in the beginning and then gradually becoming stronger so you can farm more efficiently...
Man, d3 is literally the opposite of what it should be, the opposite of what made d2 so great... Oh well, I guess it's the curse of the millenials and their need for instant gratification that Blizzard is so desperately trying to cater to.
This is so true, and what it means is that D3 is so fixable. Someone could take D3 to a private server, make some tweaks and end with an amazing game.
First go back to a D2 style loot system with viable yellow/blue gear, non-set legendaries, charms, and rune words.
Second, get rid of Area Damage stat. This forces only one play style for every build of every class; i.e., gathering everything into a tight little bundle and trying to AoE spell the bundle down to multiply Area Damage stat. To me, that ruins the game even more than set bonuses.
Every season is a zdps monk, zdps barb for gathering everything into one tiny spot, and 2 glass cannon dps to blow up that spot. Derp. That's the most fun formula? Area Damage stat is the culprit.
And you can't compete on the solo leaderboards without competing on the 4-man boards, with that formula, to gain the higher gem/paragon/enchant levels. So you *have* to play that one formula, season after season, because of Area Damage stat.

agree with all of this but one thing that always put me off d2 was how hard it was back in the day to gear for meta or "realize on your own" what the best items would be. D3 has a very intuitive mathematical model so that as dumbed down as it might be compared to d2 - it's rewarding to be able to figure out a build on your own as easy as one two three.
I guess if d2 had some sort of straight-forward instruction system or a sort of way to figure out "okay the game contains these 38 different types of builds to strive for (which all contain concrete builds)" it would be much easier to get into it. It would cost you the mystery of the game and all that, however so that's a major drawback in my opinion. I always played the fuck out of d2 simply due to the ambient, the story and so forth. so amazing! Flavor in this game is just incredible compared to anything else really
I Think today its very important to bring new content like poe does, it keep the game fresh, and even old Players come back, new Items, maps, mechamics, heist, harvest, new Bosses, new stuff Overall, d3 was so minimalistic, it had nothing, and the seasons are a joke, poe is maybe little Komplex but once ur into it, it isnt, but u can do alot even Build ur hideout so its nice u can do what u want, if blightmap delimap, simulacrium, shaper Kills, u elder, sirus, cpture beast, idk what all, and its just nice and thats the rightway what leads to succes

D2 is installed and used frequently. I uninstalled D3 the year it launched. The game that is STILL in development. Lesson learned. Don't buy modern games.
On your comment of the charms being annoying due to it cluttering your inventory space I do understand your complaint however I personally see value in sacrificing one advantage (inventory space) in lieu of a different advantage (buffs you wouldn't be able to otherwise have through equip load) I won't say I'm extremely familiar with the game but in my playthrough I saw it through that lens and found it to be intriguing and that same ideology of advantages and disadvantages has been mirrored in the souls-borne series through item types. Just thought that was kinda cool

The problem in Diablo 3 is that it has not more builds, is not more an ARPG, just a casual adventure as thousands out there. Path of Exile is the real Diablo 3 online, and Grim Dawn is how it should be offline.

Completely agree! Basically D3 itemization is complete garbage.
Most legendary items change how skills works and thus making some of them required for a build to work. D2 has "Preffered" items for certain build but build will still WORK with almost any other items but will be weaker. That's all, you can play how you want and items make you stronger. They are not a requirement as in d3.
Seriously, D2 with new graphics (not the ones from d3..), biggger inventory/stash, gold pickup would be sooooooooooooo much better than d3 is.

d2 was the shit i got into it after playing wc2 and wc2 for a long time and i got so addicted, didnt play until lod was out but i shortly got into it and loved how deep it was. such an awesome community too. i played non ladder early on and became good would do baal runs and trade all day then hang in the private duel games all night. loved my hybrid amazon the most.. also loved bvb and pvp melee duels. eventually set up a bot and shit even fun times. d3 sucked balls i tried it but i couldnt keep playing for long.
D2 is/was hands down the best loot grinding game ever.PoE is getting close these days to it, but still has some way to go particularly in targeting specific items and the redundancy of certain types of items. But PoE is way way ahead in terms of character development.

pretty late here but i think the biggest "problem" was getting away from a skill tree / points. It's so hard for the D3 balance team to actually balance their game because all of the numbers were so fucking stupid high and tied to weapons which would benefit different skills which were already "+5400% damage" LUL.
Kind sir, I beg of you, the game HAS an amazing loot system, the game is still on!
I really hope they'd make primal items in d3 roll two legendary effects which complement one another, or buff the legendary effects altogether....i think if they were extremely rare but 'gamebreaking' at the same time, you'd see some new builds shine and add a bit more diversity to the game. like imagine if you could get up to 2/3 of these per season and potentially make a build which revolved around them to push the GR's.
I'm annoyed that you don't keep charms of the same skin nearby, and the fact that you don't have cube in your inventory.
Would easily playing D2 for 10 years if they just updated the engine and updated the the chat/communication.
