      Not really. It was written in Scots and should be sung in Scots. Really loses its effect in English.

    Es wird als Schottisch/Englisch eingeordnet, da es verschiedene Versionen gibt.
    Das Original ist da schwer zu finden, denn Krähen waren in englischen Volksliedern ein oft verwendetes Motiv. (Twa Corbies, The Three Ravens etc.)

    The main part of the album "A... New Stories From An Old Book..." (except for the last two songs) was created by me in 1994-1995. It was based on the texts of old ballads, as well as poems by poets of Great Britain and Ireland of the 18th and 19th centuries (Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, George Gordon Byron, Thomas Moore, etc.). You can find some information about this, as well as lyrics and information about the musicians who provided their recordings for the sampler, in the "Lyrics" section, which is attached to each music composition (if this feature is supported on a specific site for streaming music). You can copy texts and information and translate them into your native language (many browsers have a built-in translator)!

    acctually the Three Ravens(or in some places crows) is a different song all together, where all are faithfull to the dead knight; this is older and scottish(versus english) and is the negative version where he is "forgotten"

  • @2Habsfanz
    @2Habsfanz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Had anyone heard or have a recording of the original tune? This version, like all the others I've heard, uses the Breton melody "An Alarch'h" (The Swan) which seems to be a merger made in the 1960s and popularized by Steeleye Span. (The tune is rather staidly played, compared to the wildness of the Breton version performed by folks like Tri Yann,) Don't get me wrong; I like this setting, but would love to hear the original Scots melody sometime.

    • @2Habsfanz
      @2Habsfanz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I just read that no Scots tune for the song was ever collected, although some composed tunes were made. A 20th c. Scots poet set the words to the Breton tune, which is about a Breton prince who defeated a French army in the 14th century. Now I'm curious to hear some of the composed tunes, although I'll bet they're disappointing.

    The text is the original version, not the version they are singing. It is not wrong precisely, just misleading as to what they are singing. Personally, I love the original very much, always have, however, I also love this version! Probably the only more modern version I like.

    So you may sit on his white thigh
    And I’ll peck out his bonny blue eyes
    And with a lock of his golden hair-o
    We’ll fix our nest when it grows bare-o
    We’ll fix our nest when it grows bare
    There’s many a one for him does moan
    But none will know where he is gone
    And o’er his bones when they lie bare-o
    The wind will blow forever more-o
    The wind will blow forever more

    @MorSamhain This phenomenon reminds me of Hapa (a Hawaiian group). To me they sound much more authentic when they sing in their mother tongue (at least i assume they are born Hawaiians). Still, they partially sing in English, most probably in order to reach a broader audience. I suppose this strategy is better than singing exclusively in Hawaiian (and not selling enough albums and hence being forced to give up eventually - which would certainly be sad).

  • @Applepoisoneer

    It reminds me of "Three Ravens" or "Three Ra'ens", but there's definitely some changes that were made.

    • @foolofhearts8126
      @foolofhearts8126 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coundessa Scarlotti other way around, Twa Corbies came first
      Omnia also doesn’t sing it in Scots, which is the language in which it was written.
      Interestingly the tune is neither Scottish nor English, it’s Breton “An Alarc’h” but it can be safely assumed that the tune was brought to Scotland by the numbers of Breton and French Noble families that came here.

  • @TheEndKing
    @TheEndKing 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dude, you wrote out fantastic lyrics...is it like that on the album sleeve or something, or did you honestly take the time to write out more authentic dialogue?

  • @MorSamhain
    @MorSamhain 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Delph1s I have to disagree with your last point. While using actual Celtic dialect would make it more authentic..., a non-speaker wouldn't fully appreciate the song. Hence, the use of a common / modern language makes it appeal to a larger (modern) audience!

    Why all those disscussions?? Just listen to this wonderfull music!!
    To end the discussion about raven and crow:
    A raven is a sort of crow.....
    It's the same as you say: Homo sapiens is the same as Homo erectus....
    No, they're both from 'genus' Homo...
    but they are different 'species'.....sapiens and erectus
    A raven's latin name is: Corvus corax
    A crow's latin name is: Corvus corone
    Just google a bit and you would know that.....
